An agreement was signed between India and Pakistan on July 2, 1972, at Simla and is, therefore,

called the Simla agreement. The agreement was blueprint for good neighbourly relation between India
and Pakistan. Both countries not only agreed to put an end to conflict but also work for promotion of
friendly relationship and establishment of durable peace in the Sub-continent, so that both countries
could use their resources and energies for the advancement and welfare of their people. The major
provisions in the agreement are the settlement of differences through bilateral agreement and the
imposition of ban of the unilateral alteration of the line of control in the Jammu and Kashmir.

On August 14, 1947, Pakistan got independence with two wings-the East and West Pakistan.
However, East Pakistan due to multiple factors was unstable politically and economically. In result, the
differences between both the wings led to the revolt in the East Pakistan against the leaders and army of
West Pakistan through Bangladesh Liberation Army (BLA) under the leadership of Mujeed-ur-Rehman.
The movement was also supported by Indian government and succeeded in separating East Pakistan
now known as Bangladesh. In this year, nearly 93000 Pakistani soldiers were captured by Indian
government. Thus, the situation was completely against Pakistan.

There are a number of provisions in the Simla agreement. In spite of that, three of them are
important for the maintenance of peace, prosperity, and stability of nations. First, both states have to
work and take steps with the resolutions of United Nations passed at different intervals. Second,
differences, hurdles, and problems between the two states have to be resolved through bilateral
negotiations, i.e., a third party must not interfere in their affairs. Third, the land and territory occupied
during the war have to be restored and handed over to their parent countries.

The Simla agreement is important for the establishment of durable peace and stability in
Pakistan and India. It had not only promoted communication but also established a number of trades
between India and Pakistan. Moreover, people can interact freely with one another and can share their
feelings. Similarly, the agreement ensured the stoppage of the propaganda was against each other. And
withdrawal of forces from the captured areas is another step towards the establishment of peace. Thus,
the Simla agreement is helpful for the maintenance of peace in both Pakistan and India.

In conclusion, the Simla agreement was signed between Pakistan and India in 1972 with a number of
provisions. However, the important provisions in the Simla agreement were obedience of the United
Nations resolutions, the settlement of differences through bilateral agreement, and the restoration of
territories. These provisions were important for the both India and Pakistan as the maintenance and
promotion of communication and withdrawal of forces to their respective countries became the real
cause of peace and prosperity of the states
