5 Documentation of article marking

Parts bearing the drawing annotation "Sachkennzeichnung (article marking) MAN 312,
section 4.3“ (as per issue of 05.83) must be permanently marked in accordance with
Section 5 with a content in accordance with Section 4.4, size of lettering ≥ 3 mm.

1 Scope and purpose

This standard applies to MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG and, if called for, also to other divisions of the MAN AG,
for the identification of materials, semi-finished products, components and major assemblies (hereinafter
referred to as "material") and their packaging, unless laid down otherwise in the definition media or
technical terms of delivery.
For materials developed with co-operating partner-companies, additional contractual agreements on the
marking of goods, if any, must be heeded.
The purpose of this standard is to ensure the ability to identify the material which is required for quality
assurance, product liability and material control purposes by means of effective marking.
Components made from polymer materials (plastics) must, in accordance with MAN 312-2, also be
provided with a material identification marking according to VDA 260 (see Table 1).

3 Obligatory marking of materials

3.1 In all cases, the following must include an article marking:

Material for which - features calling for documentation have been determined
- customer safety or procedural regulations have been laid down by the
authorities
- an article designation is called for in technical delivery conditions, standards or
drawings
- an article designation is necessary for reasons of product liability,
- cast or forged blanks are produced (ie parts for which further processing at
other manufacturers' is typical)
- a material approval relating to a specific manufacturer is called for in
accordance with MAN 239-1 (non–metallic materials)
- it is necessary to distinguish between alternative versions or several suppliers
of the same component.

3.2 If economically possible, the following must include an article marking:

Material which is - manufactured by an outside supplier and/or
- even if manufactured by MAN itself, easily confused and possessing an
important function

3.3 The following need not include an article marking unless this is necessary for material control
purposes:
Material with an ancillary function or in permanent groupings, particularly if manufactured by MAN itself.

3.4 Packaging (container, canisters, pallets) must always bear an article marking.

4 Requirements to be satisfied by markings

4.1 Materials required to bear an article marking in accordance with 3.1 and 3.2 above must be
permanently marked in accordance with 4.5 with the content stated in Section 4.4.
For this material, non-permanent marking is permissible only by agreement if the permanent marking

- would adversely affect functional or appearance requirements or

- is not possible for reasons of size or the nature of the material to
which it should be applied.
4.2 Material in accordance with Section 3.3, for which article marking is required only for material control
purposes, can as an alternative be given non–permanent marking in accordance with Section 4.5 and
with the content stated in Section 4.4.
4.3 Packaging is normally given a non–permanent marking in accordance with Section 5, with the content as
stated in Section 4.4.

4.4 Content of article marking

Unless other details are called for in technical supply conditions, standards or drawings, the information stated
in Table 1 normally applies.
Should this prove impossible in unusual situations for space reasons, the details stated in the table may be
omitted in a sequence starting from the bottom of the table and working upwards, except for those shown in
boxes ⌧ , which must not be omitted.
In the case of material or packaging manufactured by MAN itself and requiring to be marked according to
Sections 4.2 and 4.3 for material control purposes only, the MAN goods or product identification mark can also
be deleted.

1) Originator = outside companies responsible for developing the material
2) To the extent possible or necessary
3) Date of manufacture according to Section 4.4.1
4) MAN to receive a production certificate to DIN EN 10204 – 2.2 for each batch
5) MAN to receive analysis values for each casting date

number or, in the case of non–metallic materials, the manufacturer's material/type designation.
7) If too little space is available, only the last 4 figures of the MAN article number can be stated by agreement with the
ordering party. As regards blanks, the MAN 286 standard is to be observed.
8) Valid for MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG, in accordance with M 3000: product designation in normal circumstances,
abbreviated company name in special circumstances
9) The MAN approval number (from TU-N) and, if necessary, the expiry date are to be shown on the packaging of
coating materials and adhesives.
10) In accordance with MAN 312-2, the following applies:
- immediate compulsory identification: for all new parts developed specially for MAN vehicles from 1991 on, and
also commercially available new parts if this is economically feasible.
- compulsory identification subject to economic considerations: for all new parts from current production, the
decision regarding the earliest possible introduction of markings is entrusted to the supplier.

4.4.1 Date of manufacture

The date of manufacture must be unequivocally identifiable.
Possible types of indication:
In normal circumstances:
1. In accordance with the following MAN specification:
Month: JA / FE / MR / AP / MY / JN / JL / AU / SE / OC / NO / DE
Year: 98, 99, 00, 01, ...
2. If the part, eg hose/hoseline, conforms to a general industrial standard, the date of manufacture is to
be indicated on the part in question in accordance with the stipulations of this general industrial
standard.
3. At the manufacturer's choice, if the month and year can be unequivocally and directly (ie without any
aid) identified.
In special circumstances:
4. After consultation with MAN, at the manufacturer's choice, if an identification aid is supplied to MAN.
This document is to be filed at the incoming-goods department in such a way that parts can be
traced back to their place of origin.

4.5 Nature of article marking

4.5.1 Type
Permanent
Markings which permit the material in question to be identified until it is taken out of operation, eg embossing,
etching, ink stamps resistant to aggressive media and abrasion, permanently attached wrappers, rivetted-on or
spot-welded plates.
Non–permanent
Markings which permit the material to be identified for a limited period of time, eg adhesive foil, ink stamps not
resistant to aggressive media and abrasion, wrappers or plates which can be removed, coloured chalk marks
in the case of parts produced by MAN itself acc. to Sections 4.2 and 4.3.

4.5.2 Version
The article marking must not adversely affect the functional and visual demands imposed on the material and
must be clearly legible. It must remain clearly visible even after the material has been processed and installed.
The positioning of the contents (eg on several lines) is at the manufacturer's discretion unless laid down in the
definition media.
In the case of material supplied by length, continuous markings are to be applied, so that the contents can be
read in full form from any trimmed-off length.
Unless otherwise stated in the definition media, the article marking may be raised, recessed or placed flat on
the surface of the material.

4.5.3 Typeface and size

The type size used for the article marking should be in accordance with the height of the trade mark and,
unless laid down in the definition media, is at the manufacturer's discretion. However, it should be not less than
3 mm high for non–metallic and 4 mm high for metallic materials.
The MAN 1 company standard and the additional company standards applicable to individual plants apply to
the MAN trade mark and product identification markings. Company standard M 3000 applies to MAN
Nutzfahrzeuge AG.
With the exception of the trade mark, the typeface should be as in DIN 1451-3, regular type face, code figure 2
or DIN 30640 and DIN 30640 App. 2, typeface A.
