Mama and baby turtle memory game

By Crochet By Coraggio Designs

Materials:
• 3.75 mm (F), 4mm, 4.25mm (G), 5mm (H) hooks.
• Worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver in black, brown, light green, dark green, and 9
different colors for memory turtles (I used scraps of yarn I had laying around)!
• Yarn needle for sewing.
• Poly-fil.
• Scissors.
• 2 buttons.
• Black puff paint. (Optional)
• Sewing needle and thread.

Stitch library:
• Sc= Single crochet
• Hdc= Half double crochet
• MC= Magic circle
• St = Stitch
• Sl st= Slip stitch
• Ch= Chain
• Sts= Stitches
• Inc= Increase
• Dec= Decrease
• FO= Fasten off

Notes: For baby turtle (belly’s) you need to make 2 of each color. I made 9 sets of turtles, make as many
as you like. For the mama turtle if you make less than 9 sets she won’t look as “stuffed”. For the baby
turtles I used black puff paint, if you don’t want to use puff paint you can embroider, or use felt instead.
You will use the same colors from the baby turtle belly’s for the mamas shell. For the shell please read
before starting to understand how to join. Mama turtle comes out about 15 inches long 14 inches wide,
babies are about 3 ½- 4 inches long.

Sewing- Using brown yarn
• Take turtle belly, attach head (anywhere on wrong side of circle), attach head around
R17 to belly (the belly will cup around the neck).
• Attach front legs to left and right side of head points pointing outward (with 2 sts in
between head and legs).
• Count 4 sts from legs and attach back legs.
• Attach tail in the middle of back legs.

Page 8
• ** Read first before starting** For the shell, there are 5 sides on each shell piece,
choose one for the middle and sew other pieces on each side except on one side. Sew
sides together with your sewing needle, using strands you FO with when making the
shell pieces. When sewing pieces together sew through the front loops only of both
piece (see pictures).

• Once you have all, but one shell piece sewn together, take the last shell piece and sew
only one side to the middle, leave the other 2 sides not sewn. Your shell should now
look like the images below. Also note, it will make a bowl like shape when finished not
completely flat.

Page 9
• Next take your dark green yarn and 3.75mm hook. Attach yarn to the corner (in 2sc
space) closest to the last hexagon piece you attached and sc around the 4 shells to the
other side ending in other (2 sc space) corner. You will 2 sc in each tip when sc around.
Don’t crochet on sides between loose shell piece. FO sew in ends.

• Take dark green yarn and attach to one corner (in 2sc space), of the loose shell. Sc in
same st as joining and next st, ch 2, skip 2 spaces (first button hole), sc in next st. Sc 6, 2
sc in tip of shell, sc 6, ch 2, skip 2 (second button hole), sc in next st and last. Ch 1 and
turn, sl st across to first st where you joined. FO sew in all ends. Shells done!

Page 10

• Place shell on top of turtle like shown, flap above tail, corners on each side of turtle. This
is how it will be sewn on. Use your light brown yarn and sew shell (not into dark green
trim) starting 3 sts from the tail, sew around body (into the side of the belly) stop when
you have 3 sts left on other side of tail. FO sew in ends.

• Take buttons and sew on either side of tail under the 3 stitchs spaces you skipped from
last round.
That’s it your done! Put baby turtles inside the mama turtle for storage when game isnt being
played and use as a stuffed toy! Hope you enjoyed making this turtle game and hope the kids
like playing it! Below are more pictures of my turtle and some turtles from my testers! Feel free
