Constitution of the Asian Student Union
at Christopher Newport University
                              ARTICLE I: NAME & PURPOSE
Section A: Name – Asian Student Union at Christopher Newport University
Section B: Purpose – The purpose of this club shall be:
1. Cultural Awareness and Integration: ASU provides an open environment for individuals of all
ethnic backgrounds to learn about each other's cultures by interacting respectfully.
2. Personal Development and Growth: ASU offers the opportunity for members to collaborate as
a team and improve on leadership skills through leadership positions.
3. Social Networking: ASU’s intention is to establish an atmosphere of mutual understanding and
respect amongst ASU members, CNU students, and the local community.
4. Support: ASU is an organization that strives to support and connect student groups relating to
Asian and Pacific Islander culture.
                             ARTICLE II: MEMBERSHIP & DUES
Section A: Eligibility - Membership shall be open to all enrolled CNU students no matter the
race, religion, or gender. Faculty, alumni, and professionals are encouraged to join but will be
considered non-voting members.
Section B: Dues – Dues will be determined on a yearly basis. Collected dues will be used
resources and supplies needed for general body meetings, club events, fundraisers, and
merchandise.
                                  ARTICLE III: OFFICERS
Section A: Officers – The officers shall be a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer.
Events Coordinator, and Education Director.
Section B: Eligibility – Officers must be full-time students. Officers must be committed and
dedicated to help the club function. They must also work collaboratively with the other officers.
Section C: Election – The officers shall be selected by an in-person interview conducted by the
current president and vice president during the spring semester.
Section D: Term – The officers shall serve for one year and their term of office shall begin
during spring semester. The co-founders of ASU will remain president and vice president until
they graduate in 2022.
Section E: Vacancy – If a vacancy occurs in the office of President, the Vice-President shall
assume the office for the remainder of the term, and vacancies in any other office shall be filled
by a special election.
                           ARTICLE IV: DUTIES OF OFFICERS
Section A: President – it shall be the duty of the President to:
   ● Preside at meetings
   ● Vote only in case of a tie
   ● Represent the club
   ● Perform such other duties as ordinarily pertain to this office
Section B: Vice-President – It shall be the duty of the Vice-President to:
   ● Preside in the absence of the President
   ● Assists the President
   ● Ensures other offices are running smoothly
Section C: Secretary – It shall be the duty of the Secretary to:
   ● Record the minutes of all meetings
   ● Keep a file of the club’s records
   ● Maintain a current roster of membership
   ● Update social media
Section D: Treasurer – It shall be the duty of the Treasurer to:
   ● Collect dues
   ● Keep a detailed report of all transactions made to and from the organization
   ● Lead fundraising events
Section E: Events Coordinator – It shall be the duty of the Events Coordinator to:
   ● Organize fundraising and social events
   ● Advertise events
   ● Find opportunities to collaborate with other events on campus
Section F: Education Director – It shall be the duty of the Education Director to:
   ● Select cultures to educate and shared with members at meetings, fundraisers, and social
       events
   ● Sending and responding to emails
                                 ARTICLE V: MEETINGS
Section A: Meetings – Meetings will be planned spontaneously throughout the school year.
General Board Meetings will take place once a month during a semester. Other meetings will be
planned spontaneously otherwise.
Section B: Notice – Meetings will be announced through advertisement, by email, and/or by
word.
                                   ARTICLE VI: EVENTS
Section A: Events – The club can host and co-host events with other organizations on and
off-campus. In addition, co-sponsorships and mixers can take place during the school year.
Section B: Agreements – The club is open to co-hosting, co-sponsorships, and having mixers
with other organizations on and off-campus. There must be a verbal and/or written agreement
between the club and the organization(s).
