ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST FOR MAIN WHEEL ASSEMBLIES 5004320--2, 5004320--3,
5004320--4, 5004320--5, 5004320--6, 5004320--7 AND 5004320--8 USED ON MCDONNELL
DOUGLAS MD--81, MD--82 AND MD--87 AIRCRAFT.
PURPOSE: This Temporary Revision is issued to allow tie bolts to be torqued using the snug angle
method.
FILING INSTRUCTIONS: This Temporary Revision supplements the contents of the last revision
of the Component Maintenance Manual specified and, if present, any previous Temporary Revision(s)
that are recorded in the RECORD OF TEMPORARY REVISIONS. Record applicable data on the
RECORD OF TEMPORARY REVISIONS sheet in front of the manual, insert page 1 facing the
RECORD OF TEMPORARY REVISIONS, and insert the pages of this Temporary Revision as given
in the filing instruction on each page.
Retain this Temporary Revision and remove any previous Temporary Revision(s) pages, except when
specified differently in the filing instruction on each page, until the next manual revision incorporates
the information from this and all previous Temporary Revision(s) into the Component Maintenance

MAIN WHEEL ASSEMBLY 5004320
TEMPORARY REVISION NO. 32--20
FILING INSTRUCTIONS: Insert facing page 709 (32--40--60).
DESCRIPTION: Re--worked paragraph 3.K.(5) for tightening tie bolt nuts. This Temporary Revision
replaces Temporary Revision No. 32--16, page 8 of 12, which can be removed.
(5) Tighten the tie bolt nuts (120, 120A, 120B or 120C) as follows:
(a) For Wheel Assemblies 5004320--2, 5004320--3 and 5004320--5, tighten the tie
bolt nuts (120 or 120A) as follows:
1 Tighten the tie bolt nuts (120 or 120A) in four positions approximately 90°
apart.
2 Remove the steel plates, the threaded rod and the two nuts used to pull the
wheel halves together.
3 With minimum torque, tighten all tie bolt nuts (120 or 120A) in a 180°
criss--cross pattern. Tighten each tie bolt nut until the nut makes its mating
washer touch the wheel subassembly.
4 Tighten the tie bolt nuts (120 or 120A) in a 180° criss--cross pattern to 60
pound--feet (81 N--m) and then to a final Lubtork torque value of 125
pound--feet (169 N--m) when using antiseize compound, Specification
MIL--T--5544 or SAE AMS 2518 or to a final Lubtork torque value of 115
pound--feet (160 N--m) when using antiseize compound, Specification
MIL--PRF--83483. Apply torque to each nut in a continuous, smooth, turn of
the nut. Make sure the wrench turns continuously while this procedure is
done.
NOTE: Use a punch to make a mark on each tie bolt nut flange to show
that the nut was installed. Tie bolt nuts that were installed more
than ten times must be replaced.
(b) For Wheel Assemblies 5004320--4, 5004320--6, 5004320--7 and 5004320--8,
tighten the tie bolt nuts (120B or 120C) using either the torque method or the
snug--angle method bolting procedures to tighten tie bolt nuts:
1 Torque Method -- Tighten the tie bolt nuts (120B or 120C) in a 180°
criss--cross pattern to 80 pound--feet (108 N--m). Then tighten tie bolt nuts
in a criss--cross pattern to a final Lubtork torque value of 160 pound--feet
(217 N--m) when using antiseize compound, Specification
KHORS AIR
MIL--PRF--83483. Apply torque to each nut in a continuous, smooth, turn of
the nut. Make sure the wrench turns continuously while this procedure is
done.

TEMPORARY REVISION NO. 32--20
FILING INSTRUCTIONS: Insert facing page 709 (32--40--60) and following page 2 of 3 of this
Temporary Revision.
DESCRIPTION: Added new snug angle torque method paragraph 3.K.(5) (2) and information on
torque limits for automatic wrenching systems, paragraph 3.K.(5)(3).
2 Snug Angle Method -- Tighten the tie bolt nuts (120B or 120C) in a 180°
criss--cross pattern to 60 pound--feet (81 N--m). Then tighten tie bolt nuts
through the final snug angle of 120° in a criss--cross pattern.
NOTE: Ensure the that the angle counting mode starts after the final
value of snug torque is applied.
3 Ensure the HIGH and LOW torque limits are set on the angle portion of the
process as listed below for automatic wrenching systems:
High torque limit = 188 pound--feet (255 N--m).
Low torque limit = 152 pound--feet (206 N--m).
NOTE: Torque values in excess of 188 pound--feet (255 N--m) should
trigger an alarm to the operator. Torque values less than 152
pound--feet (206 N--m) should allow the equipment to rotate past
the 120 degree until the minimum torque limit is reached.
