This study was conducted to determine the factors affecting motivation
towards entrepreneurial engagement among senior high school students at Dr.
Cecilio Putong National High School. The study used a descriptive-mixed method
of research design using quantitative and qualitative approaches. In the
quantitative approach, the survey questionnaire was adapted from the study of
Bin Jomah (2018) titled Students' Perceptions of Factors Influencing
Entrepreneurial Intention at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia and modified to
fit the study to determine the motivations of senior high school students towards
entrepreneurial engagement. In the qualitative approach, researcher-made
questions were used as guide in a semi-structured interview. There were 292
respondents in the quantitative approach, and there were 4 respondents in the
qualitative approach who were all senior high school students. The results of the
study indicated that while considering pursuing entrepreneurial activities, senior
high school students are motivated by a variety of factors, including social
factors, personal perspectives, personal interests, and familial guidance. Further,
it was revealed that there is no relationship between demographic profile in terms
of sex and strand and motivation towards entrepreneurial engagement among
senior high school students in terms of personal, family, social, and academic
factors. The study concluded that motivation among senior high school students
is a complex phenomenon influenced by personal, family, academic, and social
factors. Thus, the researchers concluded that the senior high school students
had engaged in personal, family, social, and academic factors. Understanding
these factors can help educators and policymakers develop effective strategies
to enhance student motivation and promote educational success. (not more than

CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
INTRODUCTION
Rationale
Bohol, is a captivating Philippine province, is renowned for its natural
beauty and vibrant cultural heritage. Tagbilaran City, its bustling capital, serves as
the gateway to this enchanting destination. While Bohol's natural wonders draw
tourists from around the globe, its rich tapestry of festivals plays a crucial role in
enhancing the overall tourist experience. This study delves into the rationale
behind the significance of Bohol's festivals, specifically the Saulog Festival and
the Sandugo Festival, in attracting tourists to Tagbilaran City, exploring their
impact on visitor arrivals and their potential to further boost tourism in the region.
Festivals offer a unique opportunity to showcase a region's cultural identity,
traditions, and artistic expressions, attracting visitors seeking authentic
experiences beyond the typical tourist attractions. In the context of Tagbilaran
City, Bohol's festivals, particularly the Saulog Festival and the Sandugo Festival,
serve as powerful draws for tourists, contributing to increased visitor arrivals,
economic growth, cultural preservation, and destination image
enhancement. These festivals foster a sense of community engagement and unity
among locals and visitors alike, creating a welcoming atmosphere for tourists.
The Sandugo Festival was established to commemorate the historic blood
compact between Spanish explorer Miguel López de Legazpi and Datu Sikatuna

in 1565. This event symbolizes the first formal peace treaty between native
Filipinos and the Spaniards, marking the beginning of diplomatic relations and
cultural exchange. The festival's purpose is to promote historical awareness by
highlighting a significant part of Bohol’s history, preserving the province’s cultural
heritage through traditional performances. It fosters community pride, allowing
locals to reconnect with their heritage and strengthen community bonds.
Additionally, the festival serves to boost the local economy by attracting tourism
and providing business opportunities for local entrepreneurs and artisans.
The Saulog Festival, held annually in Tagbilaran City, Bohol, is a vibrant
celebration honoring St. Joseph the Worker and plays a significant role in
boosting tourism in the city. It's part of a vibrant festival calendar in Bohol,
alongside other popular events like the Sandugo Festival, which creates a year-
round attraction for tourists seeking unique cultural experiences. The festival,
along with other Bohol festivals, showcases the region's rich cultural heritage
through vibrant street dancing, colorful costumes, and traditional music, creating
a memorable experience for tourists and fostering a deeper appreciation for the
region's culture. This contributes to the positive image of Tagbilaran City and
Bohol as a vibrant and culturally rich destination, attracting tourists seeking
authentic experiences beyond the typical tourist attractions. In essence, the
Saulog Festival is a key player in Bohol's tourism strategy, working alongside
other festivals to attract tourists, promote the region's cultural heritage, and
contribute to economic growth. This festivals has a significant impact on tourism
in Bohol, attracting both local and international visitors eager to experience the

colorful parades, cultural events, and traditional performances. This influx of
tourists benefits the local economy through increased spending on
accommodations, food, and services. The festival also helps position Bohol as a
cultural destination, complementing its natural attractions such as the Chocolate
Hills and Panglao beaches. Moreover, the increased tourist presence promotes
cultural exchange, as visitors are exposed to authentic Boholano traditions, and
locals engage with diverse perspectives.
The goal of this study aims to analyze the impact of the Saulog Festival and
the Sandugo Festival on tourist arrivals in Tagbilaran City, identify key factors
contributing to their success in attracting tourists, evaluate the economic benefits
for the local community, and explore the potential of these festivals to further
enhance tourism in Bohol. By focusing on these specific festivals, this study aims
to provide a deeper understanding of how they contribute to the tourism
landscape of Tagbilaran City, ultimately helping local authorities, tourism
organizations, and businesses to develop strategies for maximizing their benefits
and enhancing the overall tourist experience in Bohol.
Review of Related Literature
The theory supporting this study shows connections with Bohol’s Festivals
on Tourist Arrival in Tagbilaran City.
According to PATA Sustainable Tourism Research (2015). This
document covers a broader study on the economic impacts of festivals and
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 2
events across regions. It discusses how the influx of visitors during festivals
boosts local businesses, provides additional employment opportunities, and
increases demand for hospitality services. These factors are relevant for
analyzing the economic impact of Tagbilaran City’s festivals.
Another study by Cayaban, Magbitang, Bartido, and Gaffud (2020). In
their study on the socio-economic, cultural, and environmental impact of the
Balamban Festival in Santiago City, the authors analyzed how festivals boost
local economies and promote cultural heritage. Though this study focuses on a
different region, the methodologies can be applied to Tagbilaran City, with similar
findings expected regarding the economic impact of festivals like the Sandugo
Festival.
As reported by (Brown 2019). The success of festivals in attracting
tourists. Is often linked to availability of adequate infastracture. The development
of transportation, accommodating the influx of visitors during festival
seasons.Imporved infastructure not only enhances the tourist experience but also
encourages repeat visits.
As stated in Gonzalez,( 2021). shows a direct correlation between
festivals and increased tourist arrivals. notes that cultural events can significantly
boost local economies through increased spending on accommodations, food,
and activities. In Tagbilaran, the influx of visitors during festivals often leads to
higher occupancy rates in hotels and increased business for local vendors.
Conforming to (Alvarez, 2022). Local communities play a vital role in the
success of these festivals. Community involvement fosters cultural pride and

ensures that the festivities authentically represent Boholano traditions. Moreover,
sustainable tourism practices are increasingly emphasized, as they help mitigate
the environmental impacts of increased tourist activities . Studies highlight that
integrating sustainability into festival planning can enhance long-term tourist
attraction and community welfare.
In the line with Ritchie and Hudson (2009). Research indicates that
cultural festivals can enhance a destination's appeal, providing unique
experiences that attract visitors. Festivals like the Sandugo Festival, which
celebrates the historical blood compact between Datu Sikatuna and Miguel
Lopez de Legazpi, play a crucial role in promoting local heritage. Scholars such
as emphasize that such events foster community identity and enhance visitor
engagement, thereby boosting tourism.
Additionally, this study by Acejo, Prado and Remolino, published in
December (2004). Examines the urbanization experience of Tagbilaran City,
taking into account the role of tourism in its economic and social growth. While
not directly focusing on festivals, it provides a broader context for understanding
the potential economic impact of festivals on the city. The study analyzes the
city's attempts to benefit from the influx of tourists as Bohol gains recognition as
a top tourist destination.
Furthermore, this study by Apostolakis and Douraki, December (2017).
Focuses on the economic impact of cultural festivals in a specific location. It
examines expenditure patterns of festival participants, providing insights into how

festivals can contribute to local economies. While not directly about Tagbilaran, it
offers a framework and methodology that could be applied to the city's festivals.
Theoretical Background
The following theories highlight the theoritical foundation of the Bohol’s
festivals on tourist arrival in Tagbilaran City. This include theory attraction:
Responding to
Tourism Development Theory Smith, M. (2010). Concept of cultural
capital can explain how local festivals enhance the attractiveness of a destination
through unique cultural experiences. This study related to Bohol's festivals and
their impact on tourist arrivals in Tagbilaran City because it highlights the role of
cultural events as key drivers of tourism growth and economic development. In
the context of Tagbilaran, festivals such as the Sandugo Festival provide unique
cultural experiences that attract a large number of tourists. Smith’s theory
explains how these events not only enhance the visibility and attractiveness of a
destination but also stimulate local economies through increased spending on
services like hotels, restaurants, and transportation. By drawing tourists to
Tagbilaran, Bohol's festivals contribute to the overall development of the tourism
sector in the city, aligning with the theory’s emphasis on how cultural tourism can
strengthen both tourism flows and local economies. This makes the theory
essential in understanding the relationship between festivals and the growth of
tourist arrivals in Tagbilaran City.
Cultural Capital Theory Bourdieu, P. (1984). "Distinction: A Social
Critique of the Judgement of Taste." Bourdieu's concept of cultural capital can
explain how local festivals enhance the attractiveness of a destination through
unique cultural experiences. This closely related to the study of Bohol's festivals
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 2
and their impact on tourist arrivals in Tagbilaran City because it explains how
local festivals contribute to the destination’s cultural value and attractiveness.
According to Bourdieu, cultural capital refers to the knowledge, traditions, and
cultural experiences that define a community's identity and appeal. Bohol’s
festivals, such as the Sandugo Festival, embody the region’s rich cultural
heritage, offering unique experiences that draw tourists seeking authentic and
meaningful cultural encounters. These festivals elevate the cultural status of
Tagbilaran City, making it more appealing as a tourism destination. As Bourdieu
suggests, this cultural capital not only distinguishes the city from other locations
but also enhances its ability to attract tourists who value cultural experiences,
directly contributing to increased tourist arrivals. This theory helps explain why
cultural festivals play a critical role in shaping the city's tourism dynamics.
Place Marketing Theory Kotler, P., Haider, D. H., & Rein, I. (1993).
Marketing Places: Attracting Investment, Industry, and Tourism to Cities, States,
and Nations. This source explains how festivals can be used as marketing tools
to attract tourists to specific locations. This directly related to the study of Bohol's
festivals and their impact on tourist arrivals in Tagbilaran City because it
emphasizes how festivals can serve as powerful marketing tools to attract
tourists. In this context, Bohol’s festivals, such as the Sandugo Festival, are more
than cultural celebrations; they are strategic events that promote Tagbilaran City
as a desirable tourism destination. According to the theory, festivals create a
unique image and identity for the location, making it stand out in the
Social Exchange Theory: Ap, J., & Crompton, J. L. (1998). Developing
and Testing a Tourism Impact Scale." This theory suggests that the perceived
benefits of festivals can influence tourists' decisions to visit a destination. This
directly related to the study of Bohol's festivals and their impact on tourist arrivals
in Tagbilaran City because it focuses on how the perceived benefits of attending
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 2
festivals influence tourists' decisions to visit. The theory posits that tourists
evaluate the costs and benefits of their experiences when choosing a destination.
In the case of Bohol’s festivals, such as the Sandugo Festival, visitors may
perceive significant cultural, entertainment, and social benefits from attending,
which enhances the appeal of.
Baloglu, S., & McCleary, K. W. (1999). A Model of Destination Image
Formation. This study highlights how festivals contribute to the overall image of a
destination, affecting tourist perceptions and arrivals. This closely related to the
study of Bohol's festivals and their impact on tourist arrivals in Tagbilaran City
because it explains how local festivals contribute to the destination’s cultural
value and attractiveness. According to Bourdieu, cultural capital refers to the
knowledge, traditions, and cultural experiences that define a community's identity
and appeal. Bohol’s festivals, such as the Sandugo Festival, embody the region’s
rich cultural heritage, offering unique experiences that draw tourists seeking
authentic and meaningful cultural encounters. These festivals elevate the cultural
status of Tagbilaran City, making it more appealing as a tourism destination. As
Bourdieu suggests, this cultural capital not only distinguishes the city from other
locations but also enhances its ability to attract tourists who value cultural
experiences, directly contributing to increased tourist arrivals. This theory helps
explain why cultural festivals play a critical role in shaping the city's tourism
dynamics.

This chapter presents the summary of the study as well as the findings in
consonance with the problem statement. As such, it made conclusions and
recommendations based on the interpretation of the data.
Summary of Findings
There was a total of 292 respondents in this study, and the majority of the
respondents were female. Most of the senior high school students were enrolled
in the HUMSS strand with 67 individuals, and the least number of respondents
were from the Food Processing strand with 4 individuals.
In terms of personal factors affecting motivation towards entrepreneurial
engagement, the result revealed that senior high school students were most
motivated by consideration of entrepreneurship as a highly desirable career
alternative. It was followed by an understanding of the potential benefits of
entrepreneurship, a feeling of freedom and being in control of own decisions, and
a firm intention to start own company someday. On the other hand, the least
motivating factor for the senior high school students was prior or current
entrepreneurial experience and activity…

Conclusion
As collectively shown in the summary of findings, the researchers derived
different conclusions about the factors affecting motivation towards
entrepreneurial engagement among senior high school students.
It can be concluded that the senior high school students, regardless of sex
and strand, were motivated by personal, family, social, and academic factors
towards entrepreneurial engagement. The respondents’ top motivation was
considering entrepreneurship as an alternative career and the benefits of
entrepreneurship. Furthermore, senior high school students realized that
entrepreneurship gives them a feeling of freedom and independence. On the
other hand, the families of senior high school students did not express their
desire for them to become the successors in their family-owned business. Also,
senior high school students did not have entrepreneurs around them.
