Technique: Interlocking Crochet

Project: Potholders
Design: Caffeine & Cupcake
Hand Dominance: 2 Pattern Versions (LH & RH)

©Lynne Adriaanse Caffeine & Cupcakes - Potholders

lynne@interlockingcrochetcpt.com 1
• Technique
o Interlocking Crochet comprises of 2 filet crochet meshes which
are connected in order to form a picture or pattern
o A minimum of 2 colours are used
o Each colour is worked independently
o Each Row consists of a A Row and B Row
o Each stitch sequence comprises of Dc1 and ch1 in either the back
or front of the stitch of the previous row
o The same colours are worked into each other and is always worked
into the row below

• Size
o These potholders measure approximately 21 x 26cm
• Yarn Options
o It is important to use yarns comprised of natural fibres such as
cotton or bamboo. I generally use either:
▪ Catania Originals by Schachenmayr which is 100%
mercerised cotton OR
▪ Eco Fusion by Nurturing Fibres which is 50% cotton and 50%
bamboo
o Yarn Usage:
▪ Catania Originals – approximately 300m per set of
potholders
• Row Ends
o Each Row IN EACH COLOR ends with 4 chain to turn. I prefer 3
chain but rule of thumb is 4 chain
• Chart
o The pattern instructions are written out. The chart is simply a
visual to make it easier for you to check that you are on the right
path

lynne@interlockingcrochetcpt.com 2
• Pattern Notes
o The pattern is divided into A rows – highlighted in Grey and B Rows
– not highlighted
o Uneven Rows = Front Facing or Right-side of the work
o Even Rows = Back Facing or Wrong-side of the work
o Ensure that your ColB or Alternate Colour is laying either to the
back or front of the MC as per each row instruction.
o A rows always have an OBS at the end
o A rows have 25 Dc including the OBS
o B rows have 24 Dc
• Creating the Mesh:
o Chain up the required chain in COL A (your main colour)
o Starting in 6th chain from hook: 1dc, 1ch, skip next ch. Continue
throughout, ending with 1dc in last chain, = x number of windows or
chain spaces.
o Chain 4 - THIS IS THE FIRST HALF OF THE MESH. Set aside
o SECOND HALF OF THE MESH: with COL B (your second colour),
chain the required length (always 2 chain LESS than the first half)
o Lay the chain over the first half of the mesh and working
THROUGH the 2nd window and INTO the 6th chain from hook: 1dc,
1ch, skip 1ch

• Solid Stitches
o Sections of this design are created with solid stitches.
o Sections of solid stitches DO NOT have a 1 chain in between
Double Crochets. The chain 1 is worked at the END of the Solid
Stitch Sequence
o Solid stitches are worked as follows: (Abbreviation: DCIF or DCIB)
▪ 1Dc into stitch below as normal, 1Dc into 1ch space, 1Dc into
stitch below as normal
o Where there are 2 or more solid stitch sections next to each other
they are worked as follows:
▪ *1Dc into stitch below as normal, 1Dc into 1ch space, 1Dc into
stitch below as normal* repeat from * to * all the way across
until the end of the section, chain 1
o The odd numbered stitches are worked into a dc and the even
numbered stitches are worked into the 1 chain space
o Solid stitches are only visible on the FRONT or RIGHTSIDE of the
project but they can be worked from the back using back stitches.
(Dcib)

lynne@interlockingcrochetcpt.com 3
• Tips and Tricks
o Stitch markers are a lifesaver with this technique
o Count Count and Count some more
o Doublecheck each row or sections of a row
o Use PDF reader or KnitCompanion (available on the PlayStore or
iStore) to help with following your pattern
o Go VERY slowly if you are new to this technique. Go slowly if Not
So New
o Work Solid Stitch sections very slowly as its easy to insert the
hook in the wrong place or to miscount
o Don’t overthink it – Just Do, Make Mistakes, Have Fun

• Border – You can switch to a hook 0.50mm smaller

o Border starts with ColB First:
▪ In first corner space work: 2sc, 1ch, 2sc then work 2sc into
each chain space across, 2sc, 1ch, 2sc into corner space –
Repeat all the way around. Close round with either a slip
stitch or an invisible stitch
o MC Border:
▪ chain 25, slst into 25th chain from hook
▪ 2HDC into corner chain space
▪ 2HDC into each chain space across
▪ In each corner work: 2HDC, 1HDC CATCHING the 1 chain
space of the ColB Border, 2HDC
▪ End the Round with 1HDC, 1HDC CATCHING the 1 chain
space of the ColB Border
▪ Sc x 25 in each chain in the loop, sc into BACK LOOP of
(scBLO) each stitch around. In order to get sharp corners
you may: scBLO, ch1, scBLO in each of the 3 corner stitches
