Animals are very important to people. They provide them with many of their needs. A lot of
man’s food come from animals.
Animals are bot throw-away things. Like humans, they have emotions, too. When the dog is
sad, it cries, whines and howls. When they are happy and content, they would wag their tail and
even lie down comfortably on its back.
II. Intended Learning Outcomes:
a. identify the reasons why animals are important;
b. recognize that animals have needs;
c. value animals.

Good days kids! How are you?
For this day, you will learn about the importance and proper handling of animals.
Importance of animals
Why Animals are Important?
 Animals are a good source of food
Cows, pigs and chickens are sources or meat. Cows, carabaos and goats are sources of milk.
Chickens, ducks, quails and geese are sources of eggs. Fish, crabs, lobsters, squids, shrimps, clams
and oysters are sources of food as well.
 Animals provide useful materials
Fur coats and jackets are made from the body coverings of some animals like sheep, rabbit, tiger
and lion. Leather shoes, bags and belts are made from the thick body covering of snakes and
crocodiles. Silk cloth is made from the cocoon of silk worms. Silk is used to make dresses,
handkerchiefs, bed covers, gowns and robes.
 Animals can provide materials for medicines
A type of research studies show that bee stings have a lot of promise curing some cancers.
Snake venom is used as material in an anti-wrinkle cream. Another type can has shown great
promise to break blood clots in stroke patients.
 Animals provide good company
Pet animals like dogs and cats are good companions. It is comforting to have a dog or cat play
or work with you. Dogs are now even used in homes and hospitals because of their healing effect.
Dogs, cats, rabbits, hamster, some kinds of birds and fish can be kept at home as pets.
 Animals make man’s work easier
Cows, carabaos and horses help people in their work. These animals are also called farm
animals. Cows and carabaos help farmers in plowing their fields. Horses pull calesas to transport
people from place to place.
 Animal are good means of transportation
Horses, cows and carabaos can be used as means of transportation. Farmers use these animals
to carry harvests from their farms. Up to now, we can still see horses, cows and carabaos pulling
calesas and carts in some places in our country, especially here in our place.
 Animals give protection
Dogs guard houses. They can also be trained to guide blind people in their daily activities. They
can also be trained to help security in public places like air and sea ports. Some dogs are trained to
detect illegal drugs and explosives.
 Animals are good sources of livelihood
Farmers raise pigs, cows and goats for their meat and milk, which can be sold in the market.
Fisherman catch fish, shells and other sea creatures not only for their own food but as a way of
earning money.
Now, what will you do if you see a stary dog on the street? Are you going to ignore or help it? In
what ways can you extend help to a stray dog?
Proper Ways of Handling Animals
Caring for Pet Animals
By now, you already know that animals help people in many ways. It is therefor important
for us to show care, love and concern for them.
Do you have a pet? How are you treating them? How do you your love to them?
Here are some ways by which we can do it.
1. Bathe or wash your pets regularly with soap and water. This will keep it clean and free from fleas
and other parasites.
2. Give pets enough food to eat and clean water to drink. Place their food and water in clean
containers. Stay away from them while they are eating.
3. Keep animal cages and shelters clean.
4. Keep pets away from harm. Do put them together in a cage.
5. Bring your pet regularly to a veterinarian for check-up. have dogs and cats vaccinated against
rabies.
Ways of Caring and Showing Concern for Other Common Animals
We should show concern not only for our pets but also for other common animals. Farm
animals, garden animals even animals in forests need care and protection. There are some kinds of
animals that are already in danger of becoming extinct due to illegal activities of some people.
Here are ways we can protect common animals:
1. Farm animals should be given enough food and water. They should be put in places where they
can be safe from other animals that might harm them.
2. Do not kill the animal that you see in gardens like caterpillars, earthworms and snails. They have a
purpose for being there.
3. Help preserve the homes of animals by not burning or cutting down trees in forests. We can
protect them by lessening our use of paper and other wood products.
4. Tell your parents if you know of or have witnessed and incident involving cruelty to animals, so
that they can report it to the proper authorities.
5. Talk to your family and friends and tell them that cruelty against animals is illegal and punishable
by law.
