Pretty Baby Hat

This hat has unusual construction and the sizing is up to you. Measure around your
head and make the size you want.

Yarn: One skein Andalien by Araucania or other aran-weight yarn. Amount needed
will depend on size. The baby/toddler size used 85 yards. An adult version would
need two skeins.

Needles: Size 16”circular US 8, set of double pointed needles US #8

Instructions: CO 7 st and knit every row, slipping the last stitch of every row through
the back loop. Knit until you have a long strip of a length that will wrap around your
head (or whoever’s you are making it for) twice. Knit the first stitch of every row
through the back loop. Begin tapering off the piece: K5, K2tog, next row knit back.
K4, K2tog, knit back. K3, K2tog, knit back. K2, K2tog, knit back. K1, K2tog, knit
back. K2tog, bo.

Sew the strip together along the side so that it spirals. Before you get too far with it,
check to be sure it fits comfortably around your head. The strip should end above
where it began and the tapered end should be sewn to the spiral part too. Don’t cut
the yarn. Just begin picking up stitches around the edge with the #8 circular needle.
If you slipped your edge stitches this will be easy. Just pick up one for every stitch on
the edge. Next round, increase thus: *K3, Kf&b, repeat around. Place a marker at
the beginning of the round.

Next round is a drop stitch round. *Do 2yo, knit the next st, repeat around. Next
round you will knit every st, dropping the yo and elongating the stitch. Knit 2 more
rounds and then repeat from * . Do one more drop stitch round. On the next round
begin decreases. Slip two stitches to the right needle, dropping the yarn-overs, then
knit these two stitches together. Repeat this around. Don’t worry if you have an odd
stitch, just knit it. **Knit one round of K2tog, then one knit round. Repeat from **
until you get to 10 or less st. Cut yarn leaving a 6” tail and weave through stitches.

Find a pretty button for you cap and you are done.
