Library Books Hat

Size: Adult (about 22” circumference)

Gauge: 24 sts and 26 rows = 4” x 4”

Needles and Notions: US 4 – 16” circular, US 6 – 16” circular, US 6 DPNs (or a second
US 6 circular), US 8 – 16” circular, stitch markers, tapestry needle, pompom maker

Yarn: All DK weight: approximately 160 yds in the main color of the hat, 40 yds book
color 1 (pompom color), 20 yds white/page color, 20 yds book color 2

Cast On: With US 4 circular needle cast on 122 stitches in main color. Join to work in
the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Place marker.

Ribbing: K1, P1 - repeat to end of round. Continue in K1, P1 ribbing until band
measures 4” from CO edge or to desired length.

Body: Change to US 6 circular needle and knit 5 rounds even.

Next we will start the colorwork! 4-stranded colorwork

is very easy to knit too tightly, so we’ll use a number
of tricks to compensate. First, invert your project so
that the right side is facing inwards (see picture at
left). You will knit on the side of the project opposite
from your body so that the floats form on the outside
of the hat instead of on the inside. This will make the
floats slightly longer so the hat will be stretchier.

Switch to US 8 circular needle and begin chart pattern. Remember to wrap floats
about every 3-5 stitches. Try to stagger them so they are not between the same
stitches each round as this can cause gaping with wraps visible from the front. Stretch
the stitches you have just knit along your needle every inch or so to ensure floats are
not ending up too tight.

Once finished with chart pattern, invert your project once more to work as normal.
Switch back to US 6 circular needle and knit in main color until hat measures 4.5”
from end of ribbing or to desired length.

Crown Shaping: In main color only: K59, k2tog, K59, k2tog. You should now have 120
stitches on your needle. Continue to decrease:
· K8 K2tog – repeat to end of round.
· Next Round: Knit K7, K2tog – repeat to end of round.
· Next Round: Knit K6, K2tog – repeat to end of round.

Change to DPNs or use second circular to decrease when needed. Continue decreas-
ing in this manner until 12 stitches remain. Cut yarn leaving about a 6” tail. Thread tail
on tapestry needle and bring through remaining stitches. Weave in ends and block.

Make a pompom in book color 1 or 2 and sew it on top!
