The sizes shown are for newborn (0-6 months, 6-9 months, 9-12 months). If you can get exact
measurement of the head circumference, that is the absolute best. If you have measurements, I
recommend making the starting chain either exactly the child’s head size, or ½” larger. The ear flaps will
help keep the hat on so you can size up a bit for extended wear.
Hat Body
Round 1: ch 12” (15, 17, 19) join with sl st to first chain to form a ring, be careful not to twist
Round 2: ch 2, hdc in each ch around, do not join to beginning ch 2 insert a stitch marker or a piece of
yarn here to mark the beginning of your round
(By not joining, you will create a continuous fabric free of obvious joints)
Round 3: hdc in top of ch 2, hdc around
Round 4: hdc in each st around
Continue repeating Round 4 until your hat
measures 4” (4.5, 5, 6) long.
The ear flaps are made without fastening off to
avoid a joint on the ear flap. The way I do this
might be a little unorthodox, but follow along I
promise I won’t lead you astray!
Ok, so we are at the end of a Round 4 repeat. Now
do the following:
Earflap 1
Row 1: Ch 1 (first dc made), dc in next 6 (7, 9, 10)
hdc sts, ch 3, turn
Row 2: dc in each dc across, ch 3, turn
Row 3: dc in next two dc, skip next st, dc in each dc across, ch 3, turn
Row 4: dc in each dc across, chain TWO (not 3), turn
Row 5: dc in each st up until the last st (5 dc total), ch 2, sl st in final dc. ch 1, do not turn
Now we are going to sc our way around to where the other earflap will go. I usually do this by sight, I like
to have a slightly larger opening for baby’s face, and a narrower one at the neck. However, you can do
the earflaps evenly spaced on either side and that works really well too. It is your preference where you
want to put them. If you have a model, that helps for placement as well. Lay your hat flat and use a
scrap piece of yarn or safety pin to determine where the first stitch of the other earflap will be.
Sc down the side of the earflap and in each dc around until you reach the marker for your next earflap.
Earflap 2
Row 1: ch 2 (first dc made), dc in next dc in next 8 (8, 9, 10) hdc sts, ch 3, turn
Row 2: dc in each dc across, ch 3, turn
Row 3: dc in next two dc, skip next st, dc in each st across, ch 3, turn
Row 4: dc in each dc across, chain TWO (not 3), turn
Row 5: dc in each st up until the last st (5 dc total), ch 2, sl st in final st.
You can finish off here if you like, but I usually like to make one round of sc to even everything out. Your
choice!
To finish the body of the hat, turn hat inside out (right sides together) and stitch closed. **Make sure
that you are stitching so that each earflap is folded evenly in half. To do this, fold the hat flat so that
one ear flap is on each side and adjust it so that the ear flaps are folded in half lengthwise ** Then
whipstitch the hat closed and turn hat right side out.
Pom Poms
Wrap main color yarn around your hand about 10 times, more or less depending on your taste and how
big you want the pom pom to be. Then snip in half so you have a bunch of lengths of yarn the same
length. Insert your hook into the top left corner of the hat from right to left if the front of the hat is
facing you, fold the yarn lengths over the hook, give a twist, and pull through just so you have a loop,
then pull the ends through that loop—it is like making a chain in the corner. Repeat for the right pom
pom.
Eyes (make 2)
With black, ch 1, 6 sc in 1st chain (do not join)
Next round: 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, fasten off black, join with beige (or your chosen iris color)
chosen iris color) *2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from *around to where you joined with beige. sl st
to first beige stitch. Fasten off beige and join with white
Final rounds: ch 1, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc. Repeat from *around for two rounds. Join with sl st
and fasten off with a tail long enough to stitch it to the hat.
Don’t worry if your eyes start to pucker, you can flatten them with blocking or when you sew it on.
Beak
With gold, ch 4, 2 sc in second ch from hook, 3 sc in next 2 chs, join with a sl st.
Ch 1, 3sc in center st of 3 sc group, *sc in next 2 sts, 3 sc in next st. Repeat from * around join with a sl st
to first ch and fasten off.
