Holiday test requirement for coating thickness over 500 micron:

SAES-H-001 Para
The dry spark tester i.e. a pulse-type DC holiday detector employing an
9.5.5 &
B4 audible signaling device shall be used. The calibration of the holiday
SAES-H-200 Para
detector is checked at least twice per 8-hour shift against a calibrated
7.2
voltmeter and adjusted as necessary. (SAES-H-200 Para 7.2)

Dry spark tester shall be used for holiday detection if the coating dry film
thickness exceeds 500 microns Note: Holiday test voltage shall be 125
SAES-H-001 Para
volts DC per 25 micrometers of maximum coating thickness. However, to
B5 9.3.6 & APCS
eliminate the need for continual adjustment, a maximum voltage of 2400
sheets
volts + 50 volts may be used for the coating thickness range 350 to 750
micrometers. (09-SAMSS-089)

Functional operation of the holiday detector is checked.

Note: It is checked by making and testing an artificial holiday in the
SAES-H-200 Para
B6 coating (not more than 1.6 mm diameter). If the detector is working
7.2
properly, it will signal the presence of the artificial holiday.
(SAES-H-200 Para 7.2)

Holiday detector is grounded directly to the equipment being tested.

Note: The ground connection shall be made by removing
a small area of coating & attaching the ground directly to the bare surface SAES-H-200 Para
B7
in such a manner that electrical arcing does not occur. If the equipment 7.3
itself is grounded, it is permissible to ground holiday detector directly to
the earth.

The electrode used for locating holidays is in direct contact with the SAES-H-200 Sec.
B8
coating (with no visible gaps). 7

The travel rate of the detector's electrode shall not exceed 300 mm/sec SAES-H-200 Para
B9
nor shall it be allowed to remain stationary while the power is on. 7.1

100% of the coated girth weld surface area shall be holiday detected,
inspected, and repaired in accordance with the procedures and
equipment specified in 09-SAMSS-089 or 09-SAMMS-113A for external
SAES-H-201
B10 and 09-SAMSS-091 or 09-SAMSS-120 for internal. Holiday detection
Para 9.3.1
shall not be conducted if the surface temperature of the coated girth weld
area exceeds 80°C. Holiday detection criteria shall be in accordance with
NACE SP 0490 for FBE or NACE SP 0188 for other coatings.

SAES-H-001 Para
9.4.5 & 09-
