1. GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program
used for photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It has many capabilities. It
can be used as a simple Paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online
batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter and so
on. Some features of GIMP are as follows:
³ Customisable User Interface: GIMP has a customisable interface, which makes it very easy to
use. You can change the theme colors and icon styles in GIMP 2.10. The software can be used
for different tasks, such as cropping or resizing pictures without compromising on the quality
of the picture.
³ Enhancement of Images: Digital photos can have several imperfections which can affect their
quality. It has many enhancement tools which can be used to change the color of an image
by adjusting the brightness and contrast, color balance, hue, saturation levels, curves, and so
on.
³ Formats: GIMP supports a wide range of file formats. These include TIFF, GIF, PNG, and JPEG.
There is added support for icon files and many other file types that are not used very often.
A number of plugin are also available, which can be used as a way to expand the file type
support.
2. Some components of GIMP are:
³ Toolbox: It contains a set of tools that are used to perform different operations in GIMP. It is
customisable, and you can add or remove any tool you want.
³ Tool Options: It is docked below the main Toolbox. It shows options for the selected tool.
³ Image window: Each image open in GIMP is displayed in a separate window. Many images
can be opened at the same time. However, the limit is set only by the amount of the system

resources.
3. The Ellipse Select tool is designed to select circular and elliptical regions from an image.
4. Transform tools are used to modify the presentation of an image or the presentation of an
element of the image. The two main Transform tools are as follow:

Move Tool: Used to move or copy the selected part of an image from one location to another.
Crop Tool: Used to crop or clip an image or a layer. This tool is often used to eliminate
unwanted parts or anything outside the selection.
The Crop tool is used to crop or clip an image or layer. This tool is often used to remove
borders, or to eliminate unwanted areas to provide you with a more focused working area.
It is also useful if you need a specific image size that does not match the original dimension of
your image.

The process of inverting a selection involves the following steps:
1. Open an image. Select the part of the image be retained.
2. Choose the Invert option from the Select menu. Or, press the Ctrl + I key combination.
3. The selected part of the image gets unselected and the background will get selected.
4. Press the Delete key. The background gets deleted and you are left with the desired part of
the image.
