KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North SENIORS SUMMIT IN KANATA
The Kanata Seniors Council is sponsoring a Seniors Summit where seniors will have a chance provide their input. The number of seniors in the City of Ottawa is rapidly increasing so the City is preparing an Older Adult Plan now, in order to be prepared to serve the needs of a larger group of seniors in the future. Since no consultation was scheduled to take place in Kanata, the Kanata Seniors Council has organized a day at the Kanata Recreation Complex in Walter Baker Park (off Terry Fox) on Friday November 25th from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. There will be a complimentary lunch provided. All seniors in Western Ottawa are welcome to voice their opinions at this consultation. Discussion will take place on transportation (including bus service), housing, community safety, services for seniors, recreation, communications and more. To confirm your attendance and for additional information, call 613 435-2820 or 613-270-9581. If you are unable to attend you can complete an online survey at www.ottawa.ca/seniors or pick up a paper copy at the client service centre or at my office; or call 613-234-4666 x 224. For more information call 311 or email seniors@ottawa.ca.
WARD COUNCIL DATE CHANGE
The November Ward Council meeting will be held on Thursday, Nov. 24th in Hall A in the Mlacak Centre rather than on the Monday. The agenda will include information about the City Budget which is to be approved by Council on November 30th as well as information on rezoning of the Post Office site, the status of the Statewood Dr. Closure and an update on what changes are being recommended for bus service in Kanata North. Residents are encouraged to bring their questions and suggestions on any issue.
REMEMBRANCE DAY
Friday is Remembrance Day. The Kanata Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is organizing a parade from the Earl of March High School to the Cenotaph on Colchester Square where a ceremony will take place. Together with Councillor Hubley I will be laying one of the wreaths during the ceremony. This is always a
very moving ceremony for me. Like many Canadians there were members of my family killed in both the First and Second World Wars and others will be remembering those who died in Korea, Afghanistan and elsewhere. Remembrance Day not only acknowledges their sacrifice, but also lets us give thanks for living in a free and democratic country that has been spared the ravages of war. Members of the community are encouraged to attend and pay their respects to those who gave their life so we could enjoy these freedoms.
SANTA CLAUS PARADE
Yes, its that time of year! On Saturday November 12th the annual Kanata Santa Claus Parade will wind its way from the intersection of Terry Fox and Castlefrank to the Hazeldean Mall. This is a great parade with many community groups participating. Bring your food donations and cash for the Kanata Food Cupboard. Volunteer Firefighters will be collecting the cash in their boots and local hockey players will collect the food. I will be joining the Mayor on the City of Ottawa float.
ZONING OF THE FORMER POST OFFICE ON TERON ROAD
The City has received a zoning request from the purchaser of the former post office at the corner of Teron Road and the Parkway. The request is to rezone the property from Minor Institutional to a Residential Fifth Density zone with amendments to permit a 16-storey, 125 unit high-rise condominium with underground residential parking and at-grade visitor parking. The amendment would also allow a reduced interior side yard setback from 7.5 meters to 2.8 meters, a reduced landscaped area around the parking lot from 1.5 meters to 1.169 meters and a reduced combined parking space rate from 1.2 to 1.0. An on-site sign will be posted shortly along with the submitted information available on the City website through DevApps. Please forward any comments to marc.magierowicz@ottawa.ca.
DEMOLITIONS ON FLAMBOROUGH
Demolition permits have been issued for 120 and 122 Flamborough. These are the older house and the warehouse. The area will then be used to construct 16 single family homes similar to those in the area.
