Grindhouse Presents: Death Proof Reviews

Deliberately paced but never boring, Tarantino's half of the 'Grindhouse" double bill builds to an adrenaline-pumping climax.

While not all of the female characters are fully fleshed out, the feminist message in Tarantino's car chase movie is impossible to overlook, especially with that satisfying and cathartic final freeze frame.

The two halves of Death Proof each conclude with a superb car sequence: one a crash, the other a chase; one at night, the other at daytime; one sickening, the other supremely satisfying.

Death Proof is too singularly grindhouse, but it works as a fun, trashy flick, and a cool female empowerment story.

What's seemingly irrelevant acquires interest in Tarantino's troubled waters, dilating time to hit you at the right moment. [Full review in Spanish]

Despite it’s throwback cinema bells and whistles, a pretty good first half, and a really fun Kurt Russell performance, the movie ends up losing steam, and the second half can’t maintain the spark of the first 45 minutes or so.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't detest Death Proof, I just feel that it came up short on what was promised. Maybe the film was over hyped and maybe I'd built myself up for it to match my expectations.

It's very character driven, it's very action and thrill driven, it also has a really interesting aesthetic.

All Tarantino's faux grindhouse tics that he evidently thinks are so amusing are present, but it's not a particularly rewarding conceit to frame a movie around.

A mindless action film meant solely for Tarantino fans.

By the end of the film, Tarantino delivers on the action with a car chase that will get anyone's engine revving.

As an anomaly, a curio, even as half a movie, it's a winner. As a stand-alone feature, it struggles to stand up to close scrutiny.

Tarantino's very bloody half of Grindhouse.

Freed from the constraints of the Grindhouse package, Death Proof can now spread out, find its proper rhythms, and emerge as another excellent Tarantino classic.

Feels much longer than it is.

Death Proof is superbly made. There's a terrible tension watching these beautiful and spirited young women getting too close to the flame, followed by enormous relief when the mood changes in the second story.

A well-controlled buildup of expectations, suspense, and character contrast.
