What to Know

Critics Consensus

Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelphrey are superb in Task, a culturally-specific crime story that's unrelentingly bleak but equally riveting.

Graeme Blundell The Australian Inglesby gives us a morally complex story about human folly that finally suggests the way fate often casts a long shadow and, in this case, adds a sense of inevitability that heightens the suspense. Oct 4, 2025 Full Review Sophie Butcher Empire Magazine You’ve seen this kind of show before, probably many times – but Task’s compelling characters, patient writing and undercurrent of emotion help it stand out from the crowd. Rated: 4/5 Sep 24, 2025 Full Review Sophie Gilbert The Atlantic The choice Task makes to soften Ruffalo’s natural affability and presence in favor of Pelphrey’s Robbie is a fascinating one, requiring humility from one actor and intense commitment from the other. Sep 19, 2025 Full Review Mini Anthikad-Chhibber The Hindu Brad Ingelsby returns with yet another culture-specific meditation on crime, punishment, revenge and retribution that gives pause even as it zips by Oct 28, 2025 Full Review Austin Burke Austin Burke/Flick Fan Nation Mark Ruffalo is at his best, and Tom Pelphrey stands out as a conflicted and occasionally menacing character. These two stories collide in one of the more compelling and engaging shows of the year. Rated: 9/10 Oct 24, 2025 Full Review Santanu Das Hindustan Times Tom Pelphrey has always been good, and this might just be the performance of his career. Jason W Loved it. This show is really about relationships and there's lots of touching ones here Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/31/25 Full Review Mark G Tried watching Task on HBO and honestly, it just didn’t do it for me. The story was all over the place, and I couldn’t care about any of the characters. It felt slow and kind of forced, like they were trying too hard to be deep or clever. I kept waiting for it to get better, but it never did. Definitely not worth the hype. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/31/25 Full Review Robert C Man, there are so many plot holes here it’s hard to even keep count. But let’s start with the setup: the FBI finds out there’s some rogue crew hitting drug houses. And their brilliant plan? Call a retired agent back into action. Seriously? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/31/25 Full Review Luke W I tried to like task, but it was so boring and dull, and it just crawled along at a turtle's pace each and every episode! Episode 6 got a tad bit better but in 7th and final episode it really crashed and burned to a flop! The characters are all unlikeable and none are memorable! This series is way over inflated by the critics! Take a pass on this one! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/30/25 Full Review Jeremy K This series is so overhyped, and the critics are way way wrong on this one! To try and even imply that Task is in the same league as "The Sopranos" or "The Wire" or "Sex and the City" or "Game of Thornes" or "Mare of Easttown" is a complete laughable joke! The cast is very unlikeable and just scummy! The FBI team is weird and a complete joke, and not even realistic! Mark Ruffalo is an overall terrible actor and not realistic at all as an FBI agent! This is a below average show at best, definitely not something you will remember! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/30/25 Full Review Nico K. Excellent. Exceptional writing Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/30/25 Full Review Read all reviews
