NGC 988 is the brightest galaxy in NGC 1052 group[6] (which is also known as NGC 988 group),which also includes the elliptical galaxy NGC 1052, NGC 991, NGC 1022, NGC 1035, NGC 1042, NGC 1047, NGC 1051, NGC 1084, NGC 1110.메시에 77과 같은 은하 구름 속에 속해 있다.[7]

2017년 9월 4일 발견된 타입 II 초신성 NGC 988, SN 2017gmr에서 초신성이 1개 발견되었다.[8]
