Biography
Calamo is a Korok Warrior who is looking for a place to start a forest.[3] He wields a Forest Dweller's Sword and throws an assortment of three of Fruit as his Special Attack, which can be any combination of Bomb Flowers, Fire Fruits, Ice Fruits, and Shock Fruits. He fights alongside the Mysterious Construct. His head protrusions and the leaf connected to them form a shape that resembles a bycocket. At some point, he wears a scarf reminiscent of Mineru, Rauru, and the Mysterious Construct's attire.
In Chapter 1, Calamo wanders into an ancient ruin in the Depths and stumbles upon a shard of the Master Sword, which is absorbed into an ancient relic, creating the Mysterious Construct.[4]
In Chapter 2, Calamo and the Mysterious Construct later above Hyrule Castle when a Blood Moon fills the night sky, causing hordes of monsters to appear.[5] They confront a Frost Gleeok in the skies above Central Hyrule in the "Beneath the Blood Moon" scenario. Princess Zelda looks up to see them after they saved her.[6]
Calamo and the construct later witness Ganondorf's betrayal of the Gerudo soldiers.[7] They save the Gerudo in South Hyrule Field in "The Howling Tempests" scenario. Calamo claims a broken spear as his reward.[8]
In Chapter 3, Calamo and the construct repel Grimgera.[9] They go to the Tabantha Frontier and are saved by Raphica.[10] They set off for Death Mountain after defeating monsters in Tabantha with help from Raphica.[11][12]
Calamo and the construct later fly to rescue the Gorons from Moragia.[13][14] They defeat Moragia in the "Behemoth in the Crater" scenario. Afterward, they wipe out monsters in Great Hyrule Forest and set off for Gerudo Desert.[15]
In Chapter 4, after helping King Rauru's forces fend off the monsters in Gerudo Desert in the "Terror of the Sands" scenario, Calamo encourages Rauru and Zelda to dub the construct as the Knight Construct.[16] Calamo and the newly dubbed Knight Construct fight the Forbidden Construct.[17][18]
Calamo and the Knight Construct later wage a battle in the Depths.[19][20] They blast open a chasm in the Elma Knolls and raid the monsters' strongholds in the Depths[21] with an aerial assault in the "Ambush in the Depths" scenario before reuniting with Rauru and the others.[22] In the second stage of their operation, Calamo and the construct claim hold of enemy lairs in the Depths in the "Purging the Shadows" scenario[23] before celebrating with the army.[24]
Calamo and the construct later return to Great Hyrule Forest approaching from the southeast in the "Fire and Sand" scenario, where Calamo witnesses the shocking sight of the vast devastation to the forest that Calamo once called home.[25]
In Chapter 5, the Sages successfully lure Ganondorf into the Depths, while Calamo and the construct remain on the surface to fight Ganondorf's legions of monsters.[26] Calamo approaches the battered Knight Construct when Grimgibdo attacks.[27]
In Chapter 6, Calamo gets the Knight Construct back on its feet for a final battle with the Forbidden Construct.[28][29][30] Calamo battles alongside the Knight Construct in Central Hyrule near Mount Daphnes in "A Clash of Constructs" scenario. The Knight Construct ultimately falls during this battle. After the war, Calamo puts down roots by the Knight Construct's side.[31] Later, Lenalia burns her notes in front of Calamo, who is now a sapling, which later grows to be an enormous tree in a forest of Koroks.[32]
Trivia
- Calamo was teased in Zelda Notes several months before the release of Age of Imprisonment. In the Voice Memory "Ancient Tree Stump" for Breath of the Wild, Zelda says that the Ancient Tree Stump near Mount Daphnes was inhabited by a dignitary spirit.[33] In the Voice Memory of the same name for Tears of the Kingdom, she further says that an ancient spear was found in the stump,[34] referring to Calamo's Gerudo Spear.
- In Calamo's bonus conversation, he tells Sholani that he once almost burned himself using a fiery sword to warm himself up[35] but that one day he will be a tree large enough to withstand fire.[36] This remark might be a reference to the Great Flameblade that can be found in the Ancient Tree Stump in Breath of the Wild.
Nomenclature
Calamo's name is derived from Calamophyton, an extinct genus of tree which composed the oldest known forest dating back roughly 400 million years.[37] This follows a naming scheme of other characters from Age of Imprisonment that derive their names from similarly ancient specimens.[citation needed]
