Tri is a Fairy who accompanies Princess Zelda on her adventure through Hyrule. They and their fellow Tris, who they refer to as their friends, were created by the Golden Goddesses with the purpose of mending Rifts.[6] In addition to this, Tri is able to pass through solid matter. Aside from Zelda, most other characters are unable to see Tri unless they have had contact with a Rift in the past.[7] Using Tri's Power, Zelda can to make use of several abilities, such as creating Echoes or using Bind.

Prior to the beginning of Echoes of Wisdom, Tri was captured by Ganon like Zelda was. After being freed upon Ganon's defeat, Tri began watching over Zelda.[8] They initially appear as a ball of Light, directing Zelda to Link's abandoned hood after she breaks free from Ganon's Crystal. As the Rift in the Suthorn Ruins expands, Tri guides Zelda to safety. Although they are not seen after Zelda exits the Ruins, Tri ends up following her to Hyrule Castle.[9]

Zelda meeting Tri

After Zelda's imprisonment, Tri witnesses the false King of Hyrule? making plans for her execution, and so they seek out to Zelda's prison cell in the Hyrule Castle Underground to warn her.[10] Upon finding Zelda, Tri reveals their true form to her, and they are surprised that she can see them.[11] Tri introduces themself and explains their story to Zelda.[8] After learning Zelda's name, Tri tells her about the King's plans.[10] Tri remarks that the versions of the King of Hyrule, Minister Lefte, and General Wright that came out of the Rift behaved strangely.[12] When Zelda accuses them of being impostors, Tri seems unfamiliar with the word.[13]

In order to clear Zelda's name, Tri suggests that they save the King, Minister Lefte, and General Wright.[14] Tri passes through the cell's bars to begin Zelda's escape.[15] However, they are confused when Zelda does not follow them, realizing that she is unable to move through them.[16] To help Zelda, Tri creates the Tri Rod and lends it to her.[17][18][19] The Rod allows Zelda to make use of Tri's ability to create Echoes, and they instruct Zelda how to use it.[20][21][22][23] Once Zelda is able to leave her cell, Tri states that she should continue her escape.[24]

After the pair sneak past the patrolling Soldiers, they encounter Impa. Zelda informs her of the help she received from Tri, and Tri adds that Zelda is able to use the Rod's power.[25] Impa then looks around and asks where Tri is.[26] Tri floats in front of Impa's face, confirming that she is unable to see them.[27] When the group is interrupted by Soldiers, both Zelda and Tri are shocked to see Impa fight them off with ease. Impa then gives Zelda the Log, which contains a Map with a marked House for her to visit.[28][29] While Zelda and Tri continue their escape, Impa stays behind to fight off more Soldiers.[30] In the Royal-Family Shortcut, the two are shocked by the sudden expansion of a nearby Rift. Tri explains that they have the power to mend Rifts, but since they are unable to fix such a large one on their own, they suggest leaving it alone.[31] However, the Rift begins growing again, and Zelda is swept up in the Shortcut's waterways as she tries to avoid it.

Tri examining the Rift

In a Cave on Suthorn Beach, Tri repeatedly nudges Zelda awake and tells her to keep going.[32] Once they leave the Cave, Tri wonders where they are, and they recommend that Zelda consult her Map.[33] Tri is shocked when they encounter a Zol, and when it notices Zelda, they ask if she knows how to fight.[34][35] After Zelda defeats it, Tri informs her that she can Learn the Echoes of Monsters by using the Tri Rod on the Shimmers they leave upon their defeat.[36] On Suthorn Prairie, they notice a Waypoint, and once it has been activated, they explain that they are able to Warp between Waypoints.[37][38] In Suthorn Forest, Tri warns Zelda of Monsters in the area, though they remind her that they are close to the location marked by Impa.[39] Eventually, the two reach Lueburry's House, only to find that it has been partially consumed by a Rift.[40] Tri is concerned that the other Tris have not yet mended such a large Rift.[41] They ask for Zelda's help investigating what happened, since finding their friends means they will be able to mend the Rift.[42] Looking around, they decide to head east to look for a way to enter the Rift.[43]

When Tri and Zelda reach the eastern end of the Rift, Tri can sense that their friends are trapped somewhere inside.[44] They decide that they must work with Zelda to help save them.[45] They then approach the Rift, to which they are able to create an entrance.[46][47] When they enter the Stilled Suthorn Forest, Tri explains the mechanics of the Still World to Zelda, including the fact that Tris are responsible for restoring anything that falls into Rifts.[48] Tri can tell that their friends are deeper in the Still World, and they urge Zelda to continue.[49] The two come upon a resident of Suthorn Village who has become petrified in the Still World, and Tri states that, although people who fall in usually break apart if they remain that way, such a thing will not happen to Zelda.[50] They also find a petrified Minister Lefte, and Tri assures Zelda that she will be restored once they mend the Rift.[51]

Tri teaching Zelda Bind

Inside the Suthorn Ruins, Tri recalls that this is where Zelda was held captive.[52] They also point out that they are getting closer to the other Tris.[53] When Zelda discovers a large Boulder blocking her path, Tri offers to use Bind to help her move it.[54] They then walk her through doing so.[55] Further in, the two encounter a figure resembling Link,[56] who proceeds to attack Zelda. Once Zelda has defeated him, Tri comments on how strange he was and compares him to the impostors they met before.[57] They then notice the Sword of Might that he left behind,[58] from which they can sense a powerful Energy.[59] If Zelda tries to leave without picking up the Sword, Tri insists that she examine it.[60] After Zelda enters her Swordfighter Form, they state that she looks strong.[61] As the pair explore further, Tri also teaches Zelda how to use a Reverse Bond.[62]

Upon entering the Suthorn Ruins' Boss Room, Tri is confused to find it empty, as they sensed the other Tris here before.[63] Suddenly, the Room begins to shake, and Seismic Talus emerges from the ground. Tri realizes that their friends are trapped inside of the Boss, and they urge Zelda to help save them.[64] Once Zelda defeats Seismic Talus, the Tris are set free, and Tri says that they are ready to mend the Rift using their ability to create Echoes.[65] They then rally all of their friends, and together, the Tris restore the portion of Suthorn Forest consumed by the Rift. The Tris then share a portion of their power with Tri, bringing Tri's Power to level two.[66] While mending the Rift together, the Tris reveal that being trapped inside of Seismic Talus prevented them from fixing the Rift themselves. They share this information with Zelda when they return to her.[67] They also give her five Might Crystals, which are byproducts of repairing Rifts.[68] At this point, Tri is able to Warp Zelda back to Hyrule from the nearby Warp Point.[69][70]

Tri meeting Minister Lefte

Upon returning to Suthorn Forest, Tri reveals that Zelda will be able to access Lueburry's House now that the Rift has been mended.[71] They also claim that repairing all of the Rifts will allow them to resuce the King of Hyrule.[72] At that moment, Minister Lefte appears and asks where they are.[73] After she hears what Zelda has been through, Lefte thanks Tri for helping her.[74] Tri is surprised that she can see them, causing Lefte to refer to them as "precious".[75] When Tri explains that so far only Zelda has been able to perceive them, Lefte is intrigued.[76] Lefte learns that their destination is Lueburry's House, and so she offers to lead Zelda and Tri there.[77]

During his meeting with Princess Zelda and Minister Lefte, Lueburry expresses annoyance at not knowing what Tri is.[78] Tri finds it odd that both Minister Lefte and Lueburry are capable of seeing them, which Lueburry theorizes could be a result of their exposure to the Still World.[7] After Lefte comments on how she was released from a Rift in Suthorn Forest when she was taken by one in Hyrule Castle, Tri states that the Still World is connected differently than Hyrule.[79] They also speculate that those who are missing could be found by mending the oversized Rifts mentioned by their fellow Tris.[80] Tri then proceeds to float through Lueburry's ceiling to scout the locations of other Rifts.[81] Upon returning, they comment on the uncertainty of finding the King and other missing people,[82] and they proceed to mark two large Rifts on Zelda's Map.[83] Tri then encourages Zelda to work with them to mend these Rifts so they can save the King.[84]

Trivia

  • During development of Echoes of Wisdom, the developers originally intended for Link to talk instead of Princess Zelda. As they struggled to answer the question "What would Link say?", they came up with a setting where Link would be mute. Since it was standard for the protagonist of every The Legend of Zelda game to not talk, they decided that Princess Zelda would not speak as well. This led to the creation of Tri, who would do most of the talking in order to advance the story.[85]

Zelda can make use of the rod's power. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  26. Where might Tri be now? You're here all on your own? — Impa (Echoes of Wisdom)

  31. Another rift... Rifts have appeared occasionally for a very long time. Mending them was our job. Except...my power alone isn't enough to take care of a large rift like this one. Let's get away from it for now. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  32. You're awake. Good. Let's go. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  33. Where are we? Maybe that map thingy that person gave you can help us figure it out. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  34. Oh! A monster! — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  35. It noticed you... Zelda, can you fight monsters? — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  36. Did you learn to echo that monster? Defeating new monsters leave a shimmer, which allows you to learn about them like you just did. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  37. Hey, Zelda. Have a look at this. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  38. All right! It lit up! These are waypoints. We use these a lot. Rifts can appear all over the place, so we use these to travel quickly around the world. Once you interact with one, you can travel to it at any time. I'm sure they'll be helpful. Waypoints can be found in lots of different places. If you spot any, make sure to check them out. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  39. I'm sensing lots of creatures in this area. I think the place marked with [Marker]IconFile:EoW Marker Icon.png is up ahead. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  40. Hm? Was this where we were supposed to go? Looks like the rift is blocking the door... — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  41. Zelda. My role is to mend rifts. I have lots of friends who do the same. We all work together, fixing up rifts. Normally, my friends fix them quickly. So it's... weird that this is still here. I wonder if something happened to them. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  42. Zelda, will you investigate with me? I'm guessing my friends are in the rift. And if we find them, we can mend this rift easily. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  43. Let's head this way. We'll need to find an entry point. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  44. I knew it. I can sense my friends in there. But...they can't move. It seems like they're trapped. If that's the case, they won't be able to mend the rift at all. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  45. I think we'll have to go in there and help them. Then we can deal with this rift properly. We can save them if we work together, Zelda. So? What do you say? — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  46. Hm... — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  47. All right. We can get in there now. Let's go save my friends! — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  48. This is the Still World. Everything you see floating around in here was sucked in through a rift. Anything that ends up here will begin to break apart and eventually vanish completely. Me and my friends have the ability to restore things that have ended up in rifts though. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  49. Speaking of, I sense my friends deeper in here. Let's go, Zelda. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  50. When people get pulled into rifts, they kind of... petrify and can't move anymore. And if they stay that way? They'll eventually fade away. But that won't happen to you, Zelda. You're special. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  51. Hey. I remember this one from the castle. I can restore her back to normal if we mend this rift. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  52. This is where you were trapped not too long ago. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  53. We're getting closer to my friends. They're farther in, but we're getting there. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  54. That's a pretty big rock, huh? You know, when I'm fixing rifts, I have to move a lot of things around. I bet the ability to do that would come in handy for you. If you guide me with the rod, I can move things for you based on your movement. Try facing this boulder, and then guide me by pressing [X]IconFile:EoW X Button Icon.png. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  55. We're bound together. OK, now try moving. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  56. Huh? Is that the person who fought the blue monster? — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  57. That was intense... He looked like the guy who helped you before, but this one wanted to hurt you... He was...weird. Like the impostors back at the castle. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  58. Looks like he left something behind... — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  59. I feel powerful energy coming from that sword. Even more powerful than the large rifts! Yeah, that sword has a special kind of power... — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  60. Zelda, please wait. Let's check out that sword. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  61. You look strong, like that guy who wears green. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  62. Oh, yeah, Zelda. There's one more thing you can do when using bind. After beinding yourself to something with [X]IconFile:EoW X Button Icon.png, try holding [R]IconFile:EoW R Button Icon.png. While holding [R]IconFile:EoW R Button Icon.png, your movements will follow what you are bound to. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  63. Nobody's here? But...I definitely sensed my friends in this spot earlier. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  64. My friends! They're in that creature... We've got to get them out of there. Come on—we can do this! — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  65. Zelda, these are my friends. We set them free! They're filled with energy and ready to get to work. So now we can finally fix the rift here. Using our echo ability, we can restore the entire area that was swallowed up by the rift. Watch this. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  66. My friends shared some of their power with me. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  67. Oh yeah, also, they told me something while we were fixing the rift. They said that big rock monster showed up and captured them... So then they weren't able to fix the rift because they were trapped inside the monster. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  68. Oh, and one other thing... There are crystals that show up when we fix rifts. They're neat, so I'll give them to you, Zelda. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  69. I'm all finished up here, so we can head out now if you're ready. I think we can leave from that spot. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  70. We can travel between the Still World and your world here. Do you want to return to your world now? — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  71. The rift that was here is gone now. Which means we can reach the place you were trying to get to earlier. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  72. If we keep this up, we'll be able to fix all the rifts. And we'll be able to save your father. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  73. You there! A moment of your time? I am Lefte, minister of Hyrule. Pardon the intrusion, but...could you tell me where we are? — Minister Lefte (Echoes of Wisdom)
  74. So...we failed to save you from that beast, and now you're out here facing much danger... I must confess, I am surprised to hear of your abilities. And your friend Tri accompanied you this whole time? Thank you so much, Tri! — Minister Lefte (Echoes of Wisdom)
  75. You can see me? — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
Who could miss you? You're floating right there, and aren't you precious! — Minister Lefte (Echoes of Wisdom)
  76. I thought only Zelda could see me. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
Oh? So Lady Impa couldn't see you? How odd... — Minister Lefte (Echoes of Wisdom)
  77. Yes, that's the place. That's where Lady Impa's brother lives. Makes sense she'd send you there. I'll lead the way. Follow me! — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  78. All right, that has been bugging me ever since you barged in here. What IS that floaty thing? — Lueburry (Echoes of Wisdom)
  79. I may have something useful. When I was taken by the rift in Hyrule Castle, it felt like I was flown somewhere far away. The rift I was pulled into was at Hyrule Castle, but Princess Zelda found me in a rift in the forest. So how did I end up over there? — Minister Lefte (Echoes of Wisdom)
Rifts don't follow the same rules as your world. Things connect differently inside them. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  80. My friends had mentioned something about oversized rifts in other areas. We might end up finding the king and other missing people in far-off rifts. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  81. Hey, Zelda. I'm going to fly up high to look for some of the other big rifts. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  82. I think I found some. There's no saying where Zelda's father and the others might be. But I did spot some big rifts we can go explore. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  83. I've marked them on your map, Zelda. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  84. If we fix the rifts, we may be able to save your father and the others. So let's get to work, Zelda. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
