Manassas (Stephen Stills, Chris Hillman and Band) -1972-03-22 - Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Manassas

1972-03-22
Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Netherlands
FM Broadcast Recording, Very Good Quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and Mp3 (320 kbps) versions

OK, Ive been dealing mainly with recent (2022 releases) music for the past few months, but before we get full into 2023 music, let's go back again (50 years) to some older stuff. In 2022, I spent some time looking back at albums that turned 50 years old, making lists of favorites, etc. from 1972 (and what a great year for music that was). The lists of the top 25 or 30 albums from that year include some of the greatest of all-time. However, there were so many great albums from that year that some very notable releases seem to have been more neglected or nearly forgotten. This band, Stephen Stills' Manassas, a coming together of Stephen Stills and his touring band with Chris Hillman (Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers) and Al Perkins (of FBB), put out a great double album (Manassas, 1972) featuring a blend of rock, blues, latin, folk, country, and bluegrass, but barely received a mention among the great albums of 1972. Even in my own list of the top 30 albums of that year, I didn't have it in there (so many great albums that couldn't all make the list), but probably should have. This was an interesting band and album, as well as an interesting time. Stephen Stills was in the final stages of touring with his band in 1971 (in support of his 2nd solo album, Stephen Stills 2, which was considered a disappointment), when he crossed paths with Chris Hillman touring with Flying Burrito Bros (but that band was in turmoil amid various departures), hit it off, started jamming together, and decided to form a new band, consisting of Stephen and his backing band (Drummer Dallas Taylor, bassist Fuzzy Samuels, keyboardist Paul Harris, and percussionist Joe Lala) with Chris Hillman and pedal steel guitarist Al Perkins from FBB. As their sessions got going, they really gelled and produced abundant material, which turned into a double album. The band is very versatile, with many influences, capable of playing in many different styles. The album reflects that, as the 4 sides of the album follow different themes, with side 1 consisting of rock and latin-influenced songs, side 2 featuring country and bluegrass tracks, side 3 being acoustic and folk-rock, and side 4 being rock and blues. The album was quite successful, reaching #4 on the albums chart, going gold, and featuring several songs getting substantial radio airplay (It Doesn't matter, Johnny's Garden, Rock and Roll Crazies, etc). They went on an extensive and highly successful tour throughout 1972, with a unique and varied song selection, and some pretty amazing shows. Presented here today, was one of their very first shows as a band, an FM broadcast recording fro their show in Amsterdam in March 1972. I've also added in a few additional songs from a show a month later in Florida. A Great show and an underappreciated band and mix of talent. The band did go back to the studio for a follow-up album (Down the Road, 1973) and subsequent tour, but by that time the magic seemed to have gone, as there was much conflict and disagreement during the making of that album (which was not nearly as good), and the band broke up soon after. Hillman left to join J.D Souther and Richie Furay in the Souther Hillman Furay Band (with previous posts here), and took Al Perkins, Paul Harris, and Joe Lala with him for that band. Stills went back to CSN&Y for a 1974 tour and expected album, but the album (and parts of the tour) fell apart before completion. But for 1972, Manassas was flying high making great music in the studio and on tour.

Souther-Hillman-Furay Band

1974-06-28
Tufts University, Boston, MA
Audience recording, average sound quality
Mp3 @ 320 kbps

Here's another show from the short-lived and vastly under-appreciated country-rock 'supergroup', the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band, featuring J.D. Souther, Chris Hillman, and Richie Furay. I am adding this to the shows already posted on this blog, mainly just for completeness, as there are not many recordings available from the only tour SHF band made, and I have posted all that I know of here. This is just an 'ok' audience recording, but again shows the band in fine form, playing nearly their complete first album, some solo songs from each member, and a preview of 'Trouble in Paradise' from their 2nd (and last album). Although not a great recording, still a fine document of this short-lived band. Audio and artwork obtained from Rocking-Byrd, from original audience master recording from David, so thanks to them for making this available. For better sound quality, check out some of the other shows from SHF Band already posted (many of which also came directly from David, who seems to have some of the only original live recordings of this band).

Here again, is the remarkable Chris Hillman, from the tour immediately following the break-up of the Souther Hillman Furay band in 1975. Chris got together with old friend Rick Roberts and members of Rick's 'new' band, tentatively called Firefall, which had begun rehearsing together but had not yet recorded or performed as a group. This was the same gig, at New York's The Other End (aka The Bitter End), where just a few days later, Firefall would be 'discovered' and offered their record contract, after Chris Hillman became ill and had to bow out of the tour and Firefall continued several shows without him, featuring their new band and songs (That first Firefall show 1975-06-06 was previously featured here). Here though we have a show prior to that day, when Chris was apparently healthy, still very much in charge, and ably leading and running the show, which features a great selection of songs from throughout his career at that point (Byrds, Burrito Bros. SHF Band, etc.) with notable and expert back-up provided by the Firefall guys.
This recording was provided to me once again by our own David M. Although he did not personally tape this one, he received it many years ago from the taper, and it has been in only very limited circulation since then. Enjoy.

Chris Hillman and Friends - 1975-05-08 - Denver, CO

Chris Hillman and Friends
1975-05-08
Ebbets Field, Denver, CO

FM Broadcast (KDPI) recording, Very Good Quality
mp3 @ 320 kbps

Here's another fine show from what I refer to as Chris's 'Firefallin' Burrito Brothers' tour. This was a quite early show on this tour, which took place immediately after the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band called it quits. Chris called up friend and former FBB alum Rick Roberts, who had recently formed a new band, called Firefall, which was practicing and playing together but did not yet have a record deal or made public performances yet. So, Roberts, along with his Firefall mates guitarist Jock Bartley (who also earlier played with Gram Parsons), bassist Mark Andes (formerly of Spirit), and ex-Byrd-Burrito Michael Clarke joined Chris to form the temporary and hastily put together band later dubbed the Chris Hillman Band, but here only referred to as Chris Hillman and Friends, for this series of concert dates in the Spring-Summer of 1975. These shows became most famous, however, for being the launchpad for Firefall, as towards the end of these show dates, Chris became ill and couldn't perform, so Firefall just took over the full show, and were 'discovered and signed' by Atlantic record execs on the spot (more about that coming later). But in this show, earlier in the tour, Chris was definitely in charge, playing a mixture of tunes from his various bands, from the Byrds, Burritos, Manassas, and SHF Bands. This is a fairly short set (probably edited for the radio broadcast), but is of very good quality. Previously, I featured a much longer show (2 sets from Main Point-Bryn Mawr - recently re-uploaded!) from later in this tour. Thanks once again to Rocking-Byrd and his blog (rocking--byrd.blogspot.com) for this one, as well as so many other fine Byrds-related shows. More Firfeall to come.

OK, since I don't have a recording of the Flying Burrito Brothers early show from the 1970-09-19 Whisky set to wrap up this string of shows, here is another short FBB set from around the same time, a couple months later, from a dutch TV broadcast, in good quality, featuring the same FBB lineup, and a completely different setlist (only Colorado duplicated) from the Whisky show previously posted. The Byrds & The Flying Burrito Brothers - 1970-09-19 - Whisky a Go Go, Los Angeles, CA

The Byrds & Flying Burrito Brothers
1970-09-19
Whisky A Go Go, Los Angeles, CA

Soundboard recording, very good quality
mp3@320 kbps

Here is a rare gem of a recording that superbly documents a unique live event, the merging of the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers into a one big jam session at the Whisky A Go Go in fall 1970, and with very good sound quality, too.  This is another recording I recently obtained from Rocking-Byrd (Much Thanks!), and apparently it has only recently surfaced. It is such a delight I just had to share it here, too. This is a great pairing, and features what is arguably the best lineups from each band regarding their live shows (with Byrds featuring McGuinn and Clarence White and FBB featuring Hillman, Bernie Leadon, and newcomer Rick Roberts). I've already talked somewhat about the entwined histories of these bands, and the various lineups over the years, so I'll just put in here an excerpt from the review that came along with this recording that more fully explains this event (Full extended review included with download).
"...In 1970, Just three days after the release of Untitled, The Byrds new double album (featuring both live and studio recordings), both The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers were booked for a series of six shows over three nights at the Whisky A Go-Go in their home town of Los Angeles. This run would also be Rick Roberts' debut with The Burritos, who were still yet to recognize the extent of his talent. The Whisky only held several hundred people and The Byrds hadn't performed there since October of 1968, so tickets were a hot commodity. Surrounded by family and friends (in addition to having a common fanbase), this run guaranteed a three-night party, playing to packed houses for every show.
Logistically, these shows were challenging as The Byrds' P.A. system was designed for much larger venues and because, between the two groups, there was a lot of equipment. Strict time constraints required the downtime to be minimal, so all equipment from both bands (including two drum kits) needed to be squeezed onto the tiny Whisky A Go-Go stage. To accommodate the Byrds' P.A., cabinets were wired to multiple locations around the room. Each 90-minute show was structured with the FBBs performing a 45-minute opening set, immediately followed by a 45-minute set by The Byrds. This basic format continued throughout the run until the final night, when the two groups hatched a plan for the late show. For this final show of the run, the FBBs would begin their set as usual, but after several songs, they invited The Byrds out for an informal jam session. The rest of the night would feature both bands performing together for the very first time." [Ed. Note: Actually, not the first time, as both bands, with somewhat different lineups, also performed together a year and a half earlier, on 2/23/69, their final night together in a series of Boston Tea Party shows. Unfortunately, a recording from this previous event, although rumored to exist, has never become available.]
"Until now, this event has been relegated to the stuff of legend, but presented here are the complete recordings of that very set, recorded by Byrds' sound engineer Dinky Dawson. Despite the challenging circumstances of such a tiny room, Dawson's soundboard cassette masters manage to capture a great deal, with all of the instruments and vocals audible. The balance is not perfect, but in this instance, the good far outweighs the bad. Surprisingly, the recording is also in stereo, with McGuinn and Hillman's vocals panned to opposite channels, allowing listeners to clearly enjoy each individually, as they sing together for the first time in years. The setlist is a Byrds-lover's dream, containing material from both Sweethearts Of The Rodeo and The Notorious Byrd Brothers albums, in addition to classic early material. Despite the unrehearsed and somewhat intoxicated nature of these performances, it is obvious these musicians are having an awful lot of fun together. Seemingly eager to dig in to every song, downtime is kept to a minimum, as The FBBs and The Byrds collaborate on stage for the first [make that second] time ever." (Alan Bershaw - text obtained from Rocking-Byrd's site).

The Flying Burrito Brothers - 1971-07-30 - Ipswitch, MA

The Flying Burrito Brothers
1971-07-30
Stonehenge, Ipswitch, MA

Audience recording, poor quality
mp3 @ 320

Here' s another previously uncirculated Flying Burrito Brothers show from David M from their 1971 tour, just 2 days before the Boston show previously posted (8/1/71-Boston Commons). Unfortunately, this is not a very good recording, as it suffers from from an annoying and persistent high-volume distortion throughout the show (in all but the quietest parts, such as the bluegrass section), that renders it quite difficult to listen to (David told me that he was right next to Chris's bass speakers, and the high volume was more than his recorder could handle. I was able to tone down the bass using EQ, but could not do anything about the overriding distortion present). This one is for dedicated fans and completists only. Because of the poor quality of the recording, I went back and forth on whether I should post this at all, especially since we already have the Boston show from this period. However, despite the problems with the recording, this is an excellent show, and almost half the songs in the set are different from those in the 8/1 show. So, I decided to go ahead and post it so that it will be available to all those that are interested in it. The pictures included on the cover art are actually from this show, and were also provided by David M. As indicated previously, these shows represented the last performances by this classic lineup for the band, as Bernie Leadon left just a couple weeks later (to join the Eagles), followed by Chris Hillman shortly after that (to join Stephen Stills in Manassas). So, despite the very real recording limitations, there are many interesting highlights here, and this is a worthwhile addition to the Flying Burrito Brothers legacy for dedicated fans.

Note: I have only uploaded this show as mp3 files. If there is enough interest, I could also post the lossless version, but given the recording quality it would only be worthwhile if there was sufficient demand for it.

P.S. Bonus photo. I know this must have been a hot day in Massachusetts, but check out Chris's short shorts and bare feet (Ah yes - 1971). As long as you're comfortable Chris, it's alright with me.

Here's some more Flying Burrito Brothers, this one from a little earlier, featuring a couple variations on their earlier lineups. In this way, we can hear how the music and sound from the varying personnel differed. This is a well-travelled bootleg release that combines 2 shows together, the first is the full show from the Seattle Pop Festival in July 1969, and featuring the original lineup (with Gram parsons & Chris Ethridge). The second part are some tracks from a show in Wynona, MN in May 1970. By this time, Chris Ethridge had left and was replaced by Bernie Leadon (with Chris Hillman shifting to Bass and Bernie playing lead guitar). This also was among the last of the shows with Gram Parsons still a part of the band (Thanks for the correction, David!). Gram had become unreliable (due to lack of interest & discipline, and the start of his drug problem), not showing up, missing gigs, etc., but was at this show. Within the next month Gram would be officially booted from the band. Much more about Gram Parsons in the next post. For now, just sit back and enjoy these fine, early vintage FBB shows.

The Flying Burrito Brothers

Audience Master recording, Good quality

OK, previously I have featured various shows with Chris Hillman (SHF, solo, band), Rick Roberts (Firefall), and Bernie Leadon (Eagles), as well as later shows where they reunited in various combinations (Chris Hillman 1975, 1984). Well, here is a great show from their earlier days when they all performed together in the legendary country-rock band, The Flying Burrito Brothers. Once again, this is a rare, previously uncirculated audience master recording from David M, featuring the last great lineup of The Flying Burrito Brothers, shortly before Bernie Leadon left the group (to join Don Henley and Glenn Frey in Linda Ronstadt's band and then form the Eagles), followed shortly thereafter by the departure of Chris Hillman and Al Perkins (to join Stephen Stills in Manassas). As most know, FBB suffered through many lineup changes in a relatively short period, and with no disrespect to the very talented Gram Parsons, who originally formed FBB with Chris Hillman in 1968, but I actually think that the band on this recording was the best overall FBB lineup. Bernie Leadon's banjo and multi-instrumentalism, as well as the addition of Rick Roberts songwriting and vocal style added diversity and new dimensions and musical directions for the band. But, it was to be very short-lived. This tour was in support of their third album (but first with this lineup), simply titled The Flying Burrito Brothers. So, here's where things really started for these guys (well, except Hillman who already was a veteran of the Byrds), before their more famous bands and careers, in one of the true pioneers of the 'country-rock' sound and style, the Flying Burrito Brothers.

Barely a week after Firefall and J.D. Souther appeared at Paul's Mall in Boston (my previous posts), their friend and cohort Chris Hillman and his band also played multiple nights at the same venue. Here is a rare, previously uncirculated audience master recording from the final night of those shows (provided, once again, by the taper, our friend David M). Chris was also promoting his new solo album at that time, the soon-to-be-released Slippin' Away, and the show featured yet another variation of the Chris Hillman Band. I had planned on providing an edited version of the 2 sets, removing all the duplicated songs (the complete 1st set, then only new songs from 2nd set). However, I couldn't figure out a way to adequately edit them together wtihout losing the continuity and flow of the sets (In addition, although the 1st set is the most complete -- longer, more songs, better-known songs -- the recording for the 2nd set is actually a little better-sounding), so, I decided to just go ahead and post both complete sets, with most of the between song background and banter intact. This way, you have both complete shows to enjoy. If you want to rearrange and edit them down to remove duplicate songs, the whole show should fit on a single CD. Anyway, once again, this is great stuff, with Chris highlighting some great songs from the new album as well as a good assortment of FBB, Manassas, Byrds, and SHF Band classics. While introducing 'It Doesn't Matter', Chris even makes reference to the previous week's Firefall shows (Firefall also recorded and performed the same song), praising the band and asking if anyone there was at their shows. Well, thanks to David's tapes (and him making them available here), we all were there at that show, as well as this one and many other of these fine shows, even though they happened almost 35 years ago. Hope you all enjoy this wonderful show, and thanks again to David M for making it possible to experience these rare shows and recordings. Once again, I have done some minor editing to adjust volume fluctuations, smooth out rough spots, glitches, and transitions, etc., to make the recordings more enjoyable and presentable, but for the most part these are the complete shows as originally recorded.

Chris Hillman & Friends - 1983-05-05 - Cotati, CA (both sets)

Soundboard - Very Good Sound Quality
mp3 @ 192

After the extended reunion tours and albums with Gene Clark and Roger McGuinn (McGuinn, Clark, and Hillman, McGuinn/Hillman) had run their course (by end of 1981), Chris Hillman decided he wanted to get back to his country and bluegrass roots. So, he once again turned to old friends and FBB alums Bernie Leadon (who had left the Eagles) and Al Perkins, as well as his old bluegrass buddy Herb Pedersen and bassist Bill Bryson (both formerly of the bluegrass group, the Dillards). With this lineup, he recorded 2 bluegrass-oriented albums for Sugar Hill Records (Morning Sky, 1982 & Desert Rose, 1984), as well as toured together throughout 1983-84. Around this time, Hillman and Pedersen were also asked by Dan Fogelberg to join him on his new all-star bluegrass-oriented album and tour, High Country Snows, in 1985. This union eventually lead Hillman and Pedersen to form the Desert Rose Band, which was a very successful traditional country band for the next several years. In this fine soundboard recording (featuring both sets from from their Cotati Cabaret show) near the beginning of this next phase of Chris Hillman's career, Chris primarily features some FBB tracks with mainly new or traditional songs with a a definitely more bluegrass sound and feel, and highlighting the expertise of his band.

Chris Hillman with Kim O'Kelly - 1978-03-02 - Roslyn, NY (acoustic)

Chris Hillman with Kim O'Kelly
Acoustic duo performance
March 2, 1978
My Father's Place, Roslyn, NY (early show)

Very good quality audience recording
Mp3 @ 192 kbps

A couple more Chris Hillman shows I want to post. This one is a unique acoustic duo show featuring Chris and Kim O'Kelly, who was a back-up singer in his band at that time. This was a rarity for Hillman, who up to this point at least, had always performed with a band. These acoustic versions of many of his songs, as well as the addition of a female voice, provide some interesting highlights to Hillman's songs. Hillman released fine solo albums in 1976 and 1977 (Slippin' Away and Clear Sailin'), and primarily toured with his own band, the Chris Hillman Band (although a completely different band than the 1975 CHB, because now Firefall was a hit band on it's own) in support of those albums. This acoustic show was a bit of a change, then, but still featured many songs from those solo albums ('Step On Out', 'Witching Hour', 'Lifeboat', 'Love is the Sweetest Amnesty', 'Fallen Favorite', and 'Nothing Gets Through'), as well as a healthy selection of tracks from his previous FBB, Manssas, and SHF Bands. Shortly after this (in June 1979), Hillman would join former Byrd-mates Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark, who had been performing and touring together for awhile, to form McGuinn Clark and Hillman (MCH), which was not quite a Byrds reunion, but something similar. MCH would become quite successful both as a touring act, and eventually recording 2 albums of new material (although many Byrds fans objected to the slick style and production of those albums). Clark once again would leave the group early (in 1981), and McGuinn and Hillman continued for some time longer as a duo (and another album). But here, we have Hillman, on his own, singing and playing a casual acoustic show with singer Kim O'Kelly at My Father's Place in Roslyn, NY. Again, thanks to Rocking-byrd for making this and many other Byrds-related shows available through his blog (rocking-byrd.blogspot.com).

Chris Hillman Band - 1975-09-22 - Main Point, Bryn Mawr, PA

The Chris Hillman Band
1975-09-22
The Main Point, Bryn Mawr, PA

Very Good Quality Audience Recording
mp3 @ 192 kbps

Here's Chris Hillman and his band in 1975, which could have been called something like the 'Firefallin' Burrito Brothers'. After the SHF band wrapped up their tour in late 1974 and head back into the studio to work on their 2nd album, it was clear that the personal differences within the band had become a major problem. Ritchie Furay's recent conversion and burgeoning enthusiasm for evangelical christianity (aided and abetted by Al Perkins) was an annoyance to Souther and Hillman, who formed the 'Heathen Defense League' in response to repeated efforts to 'save' them. They each wrote their own songs and only came together to record them. When the album, the aptly titled Trouble in Paradise, was finished and released in 1975, to generally lackluster reviews and sales, and a planned tour was cancelled (supposedly due to an injury to Furay's hand, but possibly also because the principals had just lost interest), the group quickly disbanded. Actually, although Trouble in Paradise couldn't match the excellence of their 1st, it is still a quite solid album, containing gems such as Souther's title track and 'Mexico' and Hillman's 'Follw Me Through'. After SHF, the 3 stars quickly returned to solo careers and each released a new solo album in 1976 (Souther's Black Rose, Hillman's Slippin Away, and Furay's I've Got a Reason). After the breakup of SHF, Hillman, in particular wasted no time getting back out on the road. He called up friend and former FBB alum Rick Roberts, who by now had formed a new band, called Firefall, which was practicing and playing together but did not have a record deal or any recordings yet. So, Roberts, along with his Firefall mates guitarist Jock Bartley (who also earlier played with Gram Parsons) and bassist Mark Andes (formerly of Spirit) joined Chris to form the temporary and hastily put together band dubbed the Chris Hillman Band for a series of concert dates in the fall of 1975. Actually, it was towards the end of these show dates, when Chris became ill, and had to dropout of the tour, that Firefall continued the shows on their own, and attracted the Attention of Atlantic record execs, who offered them their recording contract, and they almost immediately began recording their first album. But in this show, earlier in the tour, Chris was definitely in charge, playing a mixture of tunes from his various bands, from the Byrds, Burritos, Manassas, and SHF Bands, as well as a few new tunes (such as 'Step On Out', 'Take it on the Run', and 'Down in the Churchyard') that would later appear on his 1976 solo album, Slippin Away. Here are both sets from his excellent Main Point show, and a very fine recording it is. Thanks to the excellent Rocking-byrd blog (rocking-byrd.blogspot.com) for this one, as well as so many other fine Byrds-related shows.

Souther-Hillman-Furay Band - 1974-10-11 - Boston, MA

The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band
1974-10-11
Orpheum Theater, Boston, MA

Good quality audience master recording
available as both Lossless files (FLAC)
& mp3 @ 320 kbps

To finish off this run of rare, previously uncirculated audience master recordings of the SHF Band graciously provided by David of MA, here is a great, full-length (17 song) set from near the very end of their only tour. It features several songs that have not yet been heard in any of the previous shows posted, including Hillman's 'Heavenly Fire' (a classic from the 1st album that was not played at earlier shows) and a new song that would appear on their 2nd album, Souther's 'Mexico'. Also new to this show are a few gems from their past groups, such as Furay's 'A Good Feeling to Know', and Hillman adding multiple songs from the Flying Burrito Brothers ('Hot Burrito #2', 'Christine's Tune', and 'Dixie Breakdown'). In fact, this show features more of Hillman's songs (6) than any previous show (as wella a longer Bluegrass segment with both 'Christine's Tune' and the instrumental 'Dixie Breakdown'). It's a great show, probably the best of the bunch (considering the expanded set), and the recording is quite good, although the vocals are a bit muffled and not as prominent as they should be. Once again, I have gently tweaked the recording amd smoothed over some rough spots and glitches where I could.  This recording, at least for the time being, is available exclusively here at the BB Chronicles. I hope you've enjoyed this rare glimpse at the live shows from this legendary, but unjustly ignored and short-lived band. I know I feel truly honored to have been able to hear these shows at all, of which I never knew any recordings existed, let alone to be able to present these rare gems to you for the first time anywhere and finally make them available to the public. Thank you David. I will try to continue to periodically provide some more of David's exclusive recordings as I get them and as they become available. But for now, please enjoy this last dose of the SHF Band before they each went their separate ways.

Souther-Hillman-Furay Band - 1974-08-23 - Springfield, MA

Civic Center, Springfield, MA

Good quality audience recording

Here is another rare recording of the great, but short-lived, country-rock 'supergroup', the SHF Band, from their only tour in 1974. This is another previously uncirculated, good quality audience recording from David of MA, available exclusively here at the BB Chronicles. Although this is a shortened set and doesn't feature any songs that are not present on the other 2 posted shows, overall there is good sound quality and strong vocals (especially early in the show). There were a few problems with the recording, however, so once again, I did some editing and tinkering to smooth over some rough patches. Most notably, there was a major cut near the end of Pretty Goodbyes (last 1:30) through the beginning of The Heartbreaker (first 0:30 sec), so I spliced in the missing parts from the Central Park show. It's not a perfect match, but it's better than nothing. As a bonus track, I also added a new song from another show from around this time. It is 'Follow Me Through', A Chris Hillman song that would appear on their as yet unrecorded second album, taken from their Yarmouth, MA show (1974-8-17 - Cape Cod Coliseum). Since this song was not played at any other shows around this time, this might be the first time the song was played live. Unfortunately, the available recording from the Yarmouth show is not that great, so I only included this one song, because this was the only new song not played at the other shows. Anyway, as I said, these recordings are far from perfect, but they are still pretty good, highly listenable, and they appear to be our only musical documents of the live history of this fleeting but impressive band. Hope you like it.

Souther-Hillman-Furay Band - 1974-07-15 - Central Park, NY

The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band
1974-07-15
Central Park, New York City, NY

Very good quality audience recording
available as both Lossless files (FLAC)
& mp3 @ 320 kbps

I am thrilled to be able to present this fine, vintage rare recording, as far as I know for the first time anywhere, here on this blog, and be able to make it available for others to hear and enjoy. As promised, here is the first in a series of rare, uncirculated recordings that I recently received from my new friend, David of Mass. As stated previously, there appear to be very few recordings available from this short-lived, but nonetheless terrific country-rock supergroup, the SHF Band (background info given in last post here). They only made two albums (Souther Hillman Furay Band-1974, Trouble in Paradise-1975), and these 1974 shows were apparently their only tour together. By late 1975, they had already disbanded and gone their separate ways. The Ft. Wayne show (1974-07-07) previously posted was the only live recording of them I had ever heard, until the past couple weeks, when I was contacted by David, an avid fan and collector, who told me about several other SHF shows he has tapes of, most taped by himself. He was gracious enough to send me a few CDR's of these shows, and they are pretty great. This show, although not actually taped by David, was one he received about 30 years ago in a trade (so I don't have any details about the taping circumstances), but has not otherwise appeared or been previously available to others, until now. This show is especially exciting because it features a full set (rather than the shortened 10 song 'opening' set of the Ft. Wayne Show), thus this show features a full 6 more songs than the previous show, enabling the band to feature additional songs from their debut album (such as Souther's lovely 'Pretty Goodbye's), as well as give each each star a chance to highlight some songs from their previous bands (Such as Furay's 'Kind Woman', Hillman's 'Christine's Tune', and Souther's 'Faithless Love' and 'The Fast One'). Although this is obviously an audience recording from less than ideal equipment, the sound is actually quite good, with clean clear sound (of both vocals and instruments) and minimal audience interference (suffering only from limited frequency range common in recordings from this era). I did some minor tweaking and editing to improve sound quality (corrected volume fluctuations, smoothed over rough patches, and boosted the low end a bit. Though far from perfect, it serves as  a fine document of this excellent, but nearly forgotten band. I hope you'll agree that it is great to hear these songs and this band, in all it's glory, once again. Back in the '70's, I used to listen to their debut album over and over. I think it's a classic, with a great sound and great songs by this unique group of musicians. But, until these recordings, I hadn't heard some of these songs in about 20 years (since I put away my vinyl LP's and switched to CD's), and it is just great to hear them again. So, here it is, for all fans of these guys, whether of their individual work or other bands, or the SHF Band themselves, and if you've never heard of these guys, but have any interest in country-influenced rock (Byrds, FBB, Eagles, Poco, Buffalo Springfield, etc.) of any kind, you need to check them out.

Souther-Hillman-Furay Band - 1974-07-07 - Ft. Wayne, IN

The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band
1974-07-07
Memorial Coliseum, Fort Wayne, IN

FM Broadcast?, very good quality recording
mp3 @ 192 kbps

Speaking of great, all-but-forgotten, short-lived 'supergroups', I just found this show from the wonderful Souther-Hillman-Furay Band (thanks to Romeo Delight on the G101 Forum - Much Thanks!). I always really liked these guys and spent many hours listening to their 2 albums back in the mid-70's. I had looked for live shows by them previously, but never found any, until now, so this is a real rarity. For those that don't know or remember, SHF Band was a country-rock 'supergoup' that combined the talents of singer-songwriter J.D Souther (solo, the Eagles), Chris Hillman (The Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas), and Ritchie Furay (Buffalo Springfield, Poco), and were backed up by other former Manassas and FBB alums, Paul Harris and Al Perkins, and superstar drummer Jim Gordon. They formed in 1973 at the suggestion of David Geffen at Asylum records specifically for the purpose of creating a country-rock supergroup. They only made two albums (Souther Hillman Furay Band-1974, Trouble in Paradise-1975), and had just one hit single (Furay's 'Fallin' in Love'), before going their separate ways due to internal tension and personal differences within the group, and lackluster record sales, but I always thought they were a great combination of artists, made a bunch of excellent songs, and were one of the best bands of their kind in their day. Unfortunately, although they may have made a great combo musically and stylistically, personally there were problems from the beginning, and they never really bonded as a group (all of the songs were written by each individually, with no collaborations among them at all), and since they were not all that successful commercially, they disbanded by 1976. This recording is from their first and only tour in 1974 (a planned subsequent tour in 1975 was cancelled due to an extended illness of Furay), and catches the group while they still seem happy to be performing together. This Ft. Wayne show was was an opening set on a bill that also included The Eagles and Joe Walsh and Barnstorm (and tickets sold for about 4 bucks - those were the days). It's a fun and lively set, and it's a special treat and a real hoot to hear them play Souther's 'How Long' as a closer here. This same song (in an almost identical arrangement BTW) became the huge comeback hit for the Eagles almost 35 years later, in 2007 (although this was not a SHF song, few people seem to know that the song was originally on Souther's 1972 debut album). So, once again, please enjoy this unique glimpse of the legendary, but short-lived, SHF band.
