February 21, 2025
Eastside Bowl, Nashville, TN
Audience recording (Mr.Sifter), very good quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions

OK, It's been quite awhile since I posted any concerts. Here's a show from ear;er this year from the recently revitalized classic band Little Feat. They have a fine new album out this year (reviewed here), and in this show, amongst all the classic Feat tracks, they also mix in four songs from the new album, Strike Up the Band. Although they have lost several original members over the years, they still have a solid core of members from the classic days in Bill Payne (keyboards), Kenny Gradney (Bass), Sam Clayton (percussion), and multi-instrumentalist Fred Tackett laying down the rhythm and funk. Newcomers Scott Sharrard and Tony Leone are welcome additions, and the band sounds great. Check out the new sounds from this classic band, as well as relive the great old classics in this rousing concert that shows they can still rock with the best of them.

Here's more from Karl Wallinger and World Party, this time following the release of their follow-up album to Goodbye Jumbo (1990), Bang! (1993) and their subsequent tour. By this time, Karl had added David Caitlin Birch on guitar and Chris Sharrock on drums to the band, as well as additional touring support. I was fortunate to be able to see them live on this tour, where they opened for 10,000 maniacs on much of their 1993 tour.  This is an excellent quality recording from one of those shows. here they feature several new songs from Bang, in addition to some from earlier albums. Another fine example of the music of Karl Wallinger and World Party. I have one more (longer) show from this same period that I will post in few days, but enjoy this one now.

World Party (Karl Wallinger, R.I.P. 1957-2024) - 1990-09-10 - Warfield Theater, San Francisco, CA

I heard that Welsh multi-instrumentalist musician, songwriter, and producer Karl Wallinger died this week. Although the name may not be very familiar to many, his musical contributions were substantial. He is best known for his band World Party, which essentially was a solo project with Wallinger playing all the instruments and vocal parts (but in later years added additional musicians and guest artists), as well as earlier for being the keyboard player for UK folk-rock band The Waterboys in the mid-eighties. He also worked on some film soundtracks and produced records for other artists. He worked with Peter Gabriel in performing, producing, and putting together the Real World Records album of International artist collaborations, Big Blue Ball (2008), which included a mix of western, African, and Asian musicians and took many years to create. In fact, it was from a post from Gabriel that I learned of Karl's death this week, as in referring to that album collaboration, Gabriel wrote of Karl: "I had admired his work from afar but it was when we did a Real World Recording Week together that I had the most creative and fun week I have ever had in the studio. Karl was overflowing with wonderful musical ideas that blew us all away, all delivered with terrible jokes that had us laughing uncontrollably all day and night. He was such a gifted, natural writer and player, it was a tap that he could turn on at will, effortlessly...Karl was an abundant talent and we have been given extraordinary music and memories from this extraordinary man."
As World Party, Karl released Five studio albums, Private Revolution (1986), Goodbye Jumbo (1990), Bang (1993), Egyptology (1997), and Dumbing Up (2000), in addition to a couple compilation albums. Private Revolution and Goodbye Jumbo are both classics, with Goodbye Jumbo being my favorite, and one of the best albums of the nineties. Karl's music is a mix of rock, folk, funk, and other genres, and the influences of his musical heroes, The Beatles, Beach Boys, Dylan, Kinks, and motown are readily apparent in Wallinger's songs and style, but he constructs his own musical world from these elements to create a marvelous blend. Some singles from his albums, including Ship of Fools, Way Down Now, Put the Message in the Box, and She's the One were modest hits. To honor Karl, here is a World Party show from 1990 in fine quality.

Staying with the remarkable Peter Gabriel, and now moving up to the 2010's, here is a show from the Back to Front Tour, which included a live version of the complete So (1986) album, in addition to a great selection of songs from throughout his catalog. Another wonderful show from these later years. This show marks the conclusion of my look back at Peter Gabriel's live shows through the decades, as I have now featured a show from each of the six (SIX!) decades (1970's to 2020's) that Peter has been performing live, and which culminated with his sensational 2023 i/o tour last year (show featured here). And he has been remarkable throughout all these decades. Don't know if that 2023 tour will mark the end of his touring days or not, but regardless, it was a monumental tour and year for Gabriel, ending with the release of the full i/o/album, which is one of his very best, and for me, the best album of 2023. And despite Gabriel being much older now than those early days back in the 70's, he still gives a great show and is making great music all these years later.  Check out this 2014 show, as well as all the previous ones featured, if you haven't already.

Here's more from Peter Gabriel, as we move on through the decades. here's a show from 2002, on the Growing Up Tour, in support of his new album at the time, Up (2002). This is a great audience recording from the Washington DC show, featuring several new songs from the current album, as well as many of the older and by now classic songs. And once again, another version of his dynamite backing band. Another great show from this master vocalist. musician, and performer.

Secret World Tour
Soundboard Recording ("Human Wave Wall" - Dr.Jones), Excellent quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) anf Mp3 (320 kbps) versions

As we continue with this look at Peter Gabriel live shows, and move up into the 1990's now. Here is a fantastic recording of a great 1993 show from the Secret World Tour, which was in support of his 1992 album, Us, and was utterly amazing. This is from a Berlin Germany show, and very close to the time that the show was recorded and releases as Peter's Secret World Live album (1994). That recording was from a couple of shows in Italy several days after this one. But this recording is just as good, and one of the very best from this tour. It sounds sensational. This show has a very similar setlist as the Secret World Live album, but with a couple of additional songs. In this show, we lose Red Rain (unfortunately), but gain Games Without Frontiers, San Jacinto, and Schanpschuss (which is the German language version of Family Snapshot). So, even if you already have Secret World Live (which is a great live album), there are some additional gems in this show.  A great setlist of songs, featuring many from Us and So, and Peter's sensational band make for a stunning show.

Peter Gabriel - 1986 and 1988 Amnesty International Shows (1986-06-15 NJ and 1988-09-27 Tokyo)

Here's more Peter Gabriel. Now we're moving up to the 1980's, following the release of his most successful album, So, and shows he did in conjunction with Amnesty International. First, in 1986, as part of the Conspiracy of Hope series of shows, which featured Peter in addition to several other big name stars, including U2, Sting, Bryan Adams, Lou Reed, Joan Baez, and the Neville Brothers. Then, in 1988 there was the Human Rights Now! tour, also on behalf of Amnesty International, and was was more extensive, going worldwide, covering 30 shows on 5 different continents in September and October, 1988. In addition to Gabriel, those shows included performances by Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Tracy Chapman, and Youssou N'Dour, as well as local acts from each locality. Only the peter gabriel portion of the shows are featured here.

It compiles tracks from various live sources. Most of these tracks are included in other shows I have posted here previously, but there are a few new or different ones, and they are nicely presented here as sort of extended Rockpile show. Although I prefer some of the full concerts previously posted, I thought it would be good to post this as well, for completeness, and you can never have too much Rockpile in your life. Enjoy.

There's no better way to honor the memory and legacy of Jimmy Buffett than to listen and appreciate his music. And of course, Jimmy Buffett's live shows are legendary for their fun party atmosphere and good times. And their are loads of high quality  Live shows available for listening, thanks to Jimmy's Radio Margaritaville Broadcast Channel. Just look around and you can find dozens of wonderful shows. I've chosen this one today because it combines a great Jimmy Buffett show with my Chicago Cubs, as this was recorded from Wrigley Field, in waht were the first series of concerts ever to be played there, in 2005. And Jimmy makes plenty of references to the Cubs, baseball, and the great Steve Goodman throughout the show. Enjoy.

Here's another great Genesis show from Yesteryear, and another show from taper Mike Millard's Lost and Found Master Collection, and also a show that had not been previously available until Mike's original recordings were uncovered a few years ago. This tour, of course, was their first without guitarist extraordnaire Steve Hackett. So, at this point the band consisted of just the trio of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford. For the tour, which was in support of their latest album, And Then There Were Three, which makes an obvious reference to the band personnel changes, they are joined by the able support of guitarist Darryl Stuermer and ace drummer Chester Thompson. Once again, they had a lot to prove, after losing another key member of the band. But once again, they put on a great concert and show. I saw them on this tour, and although I was really disappointed not to get to see Steve with the band, it was a great show nonetheless, featuring songs from throughout their catalog.

Audience Recording (Mike Millard Original Master Tapes via JEMS), very good quality

OK, I'm back with some more classic progressive rock shows. Over the past year or so I've featured several shows from the Mike Millard Masters collection (high quality audience recordings taped by Mike Millard), and today I have another gem from that series, a classic Genesis show from 1976. The 1976 tour was their first without former lead singer Peter Gabriel (who left the band the previous year) and thus the first with Phil Collins as frontman, and that featured music from their first Gabriel-less new album Trick of the Tail. And proving to their critics and fans that not only could they carry on, but thrive as well in their new incarnation, was vitally important to the band. For this tour they brought along legendary drummer Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimson), the only time he played with Genesis, so Phil could spend most of his time up front of the band. And of course, both the album and tour was a raging success. Borrowing Bruford was a one-time only a temporary thing. For subsequent tours, the also legendary Chester Thompson (Zappa, Weather Report) toured with them on drums. So, this was the only chance to see and hear Bruford with Genesis. And it was a great show, featuring a mix of earlier songs (with Collins on lead vocals for the first time) and the new songs from Trick of the Tail (which were woven together perfectly), showed that Phil could handle the task beautifully. Anyway, here is a great shoe from that tour.

Tracklist:
01 Dance On A Volcano
02 The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

Peter Gabriel - 2023-05-24 - Stade Pierre Mauroy, Villaneuve d'Asq, France - i/o tour

PETER GABRIEL
Wednesday 24th May 2023
Stade Pierre Mauroy, Villeneuve d'Ascq, France
Audience recording (TakerRecords), very good sound quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and Mp3 (320 kbps) versions

Last month I posted a recent show from legendary progressive rock vocalist and icon Jon Anderson from his current tour, and this month I have a great show from another legendary progressive rock vocalist and icon Peter Gabriel from his current i/o Tour, which features 11 songs from his upcoming new album, i/o. Peter has been slowly releasing new songs this year, with one song coming out on each full moon. Thus, so far this year, 6 of the new songs have been released, but on this tour he plays 11 of the new songs, so several more are featured here. This is a big deal, because it has been over 20 years since Peter's last new album of original songs (Up, 2002). Already, the album is stacking up as one of the year's best, even before it is released. In addition, he plays several favorites from his previous albums on this tour, including several from So (his biggest-selling album), and numerous crowd favorites. As usual, he has a top-notch 8-piece band backing him, and the show is just sensational. There have been several shows with decent audio recordings, and a few that also have video (and are available to view on YouTube), and if you are a fan, I would suggest checking out some of the videos of the show, as they are great as well.  Great songs and a great performance from this master of melodic progressive rock.

Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks - Yes Epics and Classics - 2023-04-16 - Newark, NJ

Jon Anderson and The Band Geeks

Yes Epics & Classics

Audience recording (A Kitty Lickin' Discs Production), very good quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAV) and Mp3 (320 kbps) versions

The current lineup of legendary progressive rock band Yes (consisting of Steve Howe, Geoff Downes, Billy Sherwood, Jon Davidson, and Jay Schellen) has recently released a new album, Mirror to the Sky, and has received positive reviews as their best album in many years. However, founding member and original longtime vocalist Jon Anderson, considered to be one of the all-time great prog vocalists, has not been a part of the group Yes for nearly 20 years now. But in the hearts and minds of Yes fans the world over, Jon Anderson will always be THE vocalist for Yes. And Jon is still very much interested in carrying on the music of Yes, and now he has teamed up with a talented group of accomplished musicians known as The Band Geeks, and he is currently on tour with them with a show called Yes Epics and Classics featuring Jon Anderson and The Band Geeks. And wow, what a show! Jon has still got it, even at 78 yrs old, his voice sounds great, and the Band Geeks admirably replicate the musical virtuosity of Yes at their peek. And the setlist is spectacular, filled with the band's greatest songs from their peak 70's period, including nearly all of the epic and classic tracks you would want to hear Yes play in concert. It is the greatest setlist ever for a Yes show, and comes in at amazing 2.5 hours They are all here, Yours is No Disgrace, Starship Trooper, Roundabout, Heart of the Sunrise,  Close to the Edge, And You and I, Awaken, and one of my personal faves, Perpetual Change. And there are 2 further epic tracks that were played on alternating nights (rest of setlist same each night), Riual from Tales from Topographic Oceans, and The Gates of Delirium from Relayer. Just sensational. And if you are thinking, yeah, well it's still not the Real Yes, hey, it's pretty darn close, as close as you will get in 2023, and with Jon Anderson fronting, well it's got just as much a claim to the Yes name as the current incarnation of the band. So, the current yes band has a pretty good album out currently, but it doesn't hold a candle to the classics in this show, and it all sounds great. This show is from last month (4/16/23) in New Jersey, and it is a good audience recording. Ritual was the latter part of the shpow epiv played that night, but  have included a bonus track of a recording of Gates of Delirium from the Reading PA show the following week, so that all of the songs they play are represented here (with the addition of the bonus track, the show is nearly 3 hrs long!). Although it is impossible to get a full real reunion of the classic lineup of Yes ever again (Chris Squire and Alan White have died, Bill Bruford has retired from drumming), this may just be the next best thing, at least for dynamite versions of the classic songs.

In honor of the recent release of their latest album, their 8th, the fine ID.Entity, here is a show from Riverside from 2018. Riverside is a Polish Prog band that was founded in 2001, and features a blend of atmospheric rock, emotive themes, and metal elements. Although they are generally considered to be a progressive metal band, their sound and style is quite different from others in that category, as emotion figures much more strongly in their sound, both in their moody soundscapes and the powerful emotive vocals and melodies of band leader Mariusz Duda. Sure they also feature some pretty heavy riffage and themes, but in service of a more majestic and moving whole. It took a few albums before they became known outside of Poland, but with each new album, their reputation grew in the Prog world, with greater success and acclaim, culminating in 2015 with the release of Love, Fear and the Time Machine. However, disaster struck the following year, as tragically, lead guitarist Piotr Grudzinski died suddenly of pulmonary embolism in February 2016, stopping the band in its tracks. But by 2018, the band had re-grouped, adding Maciej Meller as their new guitarist, and began recording a new album, Wasteland (2018). And now, this year, 2023, the band has released their next album, ID.Entity (short review previously posted here). The show presented here is from 2018, several months before the release of Wasteland (only 1 song from Wasteland, in an early improvisational version, is played in the show), at the Night of the Prog Festival in Loreley, Germany. A fine show that features a nice selection of songs from throughout their earlier catalog.

Here's another great show from Kansas, this one from a little more than a year after the previous one posted, following the release of their next blockbuster album, The Point of Know Return (1977), which went on to become their highest charting and biggest selling album, and featuring the hit singles 'point of Know Return' and 'Dust in the Wind'.  Thus this show features mainly songs from Point of Know Return and Leftoverture, and fewer songs from the earlier albums. This period would mark their peak in popularity as the band headlined and sold-out major rock venues. Their live shows from this period were captured in their classic double Live album release Two For The Show in 1978.Their subsequent studio album, Monolith (1979), althought still popular, failed generate the radio airplay or sales of the previous couple albums. The 1980's saw major changes for the band, as both Kerry Livgren and David Hope became born-again Christians, with their faith now being reflected in their songs, and Audio-Visions (1980) would be the last album featuring the classic Kansas lineup. Vocalist Steve Walsh left the band in 1981. Violinist Robby Steinhardt left in 1982. Subsequent albums were more pop-oriented and less well-received, and Livgren and Hope left by 1984, leading to the disbanding of the group. But Walsh, Williams, and Ehart re-formed the band in 1985, releasing Power in 1986 and The Spirit of Things in 1988. There were various reunions, tours, and changing lineups in the subsequent years, with Steinhardt returning in 1997 and staying until 2006. The band had a bit of a resurgence in the 2010's, and to the present, as a popular touring act, often playing with symphony orchestra's and performing entire classic albums at shows. The band released new albums, The Prelude Implicit (2016) and The Absence of Presence (2020) in recent years to much acclaim, although Rich Williams and Phil Ehart are the only members remaining from the classic lineup. To be honest, I haven't really kept up with or followed the band since the seventies, but they have carried on throughout the years. But here, again, we go back to their glory days for this Point of Know Return show from 1977.

Tracklist:
01 Magnum Opus Intro > Hopelessly Human

Kansas (with Special Guests Ambrosia) - 1976-10-31 - Syria Mosque, Pittsburgh, PA (PRRP-018 Remaster)

Here is a classic '70's band that I have not featured yet, the American progressive rock band Kansas. Kansas got its initial start around 1970 when two rival bands from Topeka, Kansas (Saratoga and White Clover) joined forces to become Kansas. But after much upheaval, turnover, and lack of success in those first couple years, the Kansas we came to know really got going in 1972, with the lineup of Kerry Livgren (guitars, keyboards, synthesizers), Steve Walsh (vocals, keyboards), Robby Steinhardt (vocals, violin, viola, cello), Rich Williams (guitars), Dave Hope (bass), and Phil Ehart (drums, percussion).  They received a recording contract from Don Kirschner in 1973 and released their first album (self-titled) in 1974. Their signature sound was a blend of American boogie rock with complex, symphonic arrangements, time changes, and progressive rock flourishes, and marked by the distinctive use of Steinhardt's violin as a rockin' instrument. With extensive touring and their progressive style, they built a strong cult following, that grew with each subsequent album (Song For America and Masque, both 1975). But it was with their 4th album, Leftoverture (1976), and the hit single 'Carry On Wayward Son', that they would achieve mainstream commercial success, with the album going multi-platinum and reaching the top 5 on the US albums chart. They would follow with another even bigger success with Point of Know Return (1977) the following year. These successes were well-deserved, but for many of us (and especially the more prog-oriented fans), it was those early albums and years that were most interesting. Here is a show from when they were right on the cusp of that greater success period. This was in 1976, right after the release of Leftoverture, but before it had achieved its breakthrough status. Thus, they play most of Leftoverture, but also many songs from their previous three albums (some which would not get played very often after this tour). So, this show was at a very critical point for the band, highlighting all their previous songs, but also looking ahead to their future as an in-demand headlining act.   This recording, which comes from a Pre-FM broadcast source and has been remastered by the PRRP (Progressive Rock Remasters Project) group also includes an interview with th band, as well as the opening set from another fine US progressive rock band from that time, Ambrosia (included at end of show instead of at beginning on this recording), who had just released their first (very good) album. So that is an additional treat here.
