'Half Measures' (MVR 701/702)
Audience Recording (Mid Valley Records), Good sound quality
Available in Lossless (FLAC) and Mp3 (320 kbps) versions

Happy New Year (and hope for a better one) for All! For this year's New Year's Eve show, we go back to Eric Clapton's string of 'Sober Dance Party' NYE shows in Woking UK. The New Year's Eve Sober Dance was an alcohol-free party and was hosted by Eric Clapton and Friends almost every year from 1992 to 2012. It was a private event and tickets were not put on sale to the general public. Each year, the band billed themselves under an unusual name. This year I am presenting the penultimate show, from 2011, where the band was billed as 'Half Measures' and consisted of Eric's usual band at that time, plus the addition of Gary Brooker (Procol Harum), who frequently joined in for Eric's regular NYE shows. The show features an emphasis on the blues and early RnR and is a wonderful presentation of Eric's band at this time. The 2012 NYE was the last of these events, however, but I have not been able to find any recording of that show, so here is the penultimate sober NYE show from Eric in 2011.

The dB's - 1986-12-31 - The Brewery, Raleigh, NC

The dB's
1986-12-31
The Brewery, Raleigh, NC

Audience recording, very good quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and Mp3 (320 kbps) versions

To close out the year, and the entire decade for that matter, here is a New Year's Eve show from 1986 featuring that rockin' 80's power pop band, The dB's. Hard to believe that I have not posted any dB's until now. The dB's were a band from Winston-Salem, NC, formed in 1978 with original members Chris Stamey (guitar, vocals, songwriting), Peter Holsapple (guitar, vocals, songwriting), Gene Holder (bass), and Will Rigby (drums), featuring a sound and style somewhat reminiscent of 60's-70's pop and psychedelia, but with a harder edge. Their first album, Stands for Decibels, was released in 1981, followed by Repercussion in 1982, and both were highly praised, but little bought at the time. Stamey left the group after that for a solo career, but the band continued, releasing Like This (1984), and adding Rick Wagner on bass and Holder moving over to guitar. Their major label breakthrough came with an I.R.S. record deal and the album The Sound of Music in 1987, as well as the arrival of Jeff Beninato on bass (and departure of Wagner). And although the album was again highly praised, major success did not follow (although the album did finally crack the Billboard 200, at #171)), and the band broke up not long after. But as so often happens with bands like this, their music became more popular after they were gone, with earlier albums being re-released, as well as live and compilation albums of miscellaneous tracks over the years. Holsapple went on to work with R.E.M., Hootie and the Blowfish, and the Continental Drifters, Holder joined The Individuals, and Rigby joined with Steve Earle. In 2005 and 2007, the band's original lineup got back together for limited reunion shows in Chicago, New Jersey, New York, and North Carolina, and then in 2012, the re-formed band released it's first new studio album in decades, with Falling Off The Sky.
This raucous NYE show highlights the band in 1986, prior to their 1987 IRS album, primarily featuring songs from Like This and Sound of Music, as well as some surprises. Thanks to Rob-in-Brevard at dbs-repercussion blog for making this show available (and particularly the recent addition of lossless), and FYI, if interested in further musical adventures of The dB's and their cohorts, be sure to check out Rob's blog, as it is chock full of all things dB's and related offerings.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - 1978-12-31 - New Year's Eve Show, Santa Monica, CA

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
1978-12-31 (New Year's Eve)
Santa Monica, CA

Soundboard recording, excellent quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and Mp3 (320kbps) versions

What a year it has been. A year with much upheaval, and, once again, the loss of so many iconic rockers. Just since October and the incomprehensibly tragic and unexpected death of Tom Petty, when I started this tribute to him and his fantastic contribution to rock music, there have been several more deaths of outstanding rock musicians. From Fats Domino, to more recently and unexpectedly, power pop sensation Tommy Keene, and Smithereens singer-songwriter and frontman, Pat DiNizio, all major losses to the music world. But, as always, their music will be remembered and live on, and for the rest of us, time keeps moving, and we must keep moving on too, to the new year.

Continuing the tradition of featuring classic New Year's Eve shows for New Year's Eve, and this year also continuing with our Tom Petty tribute, here is the only Petty NYE show recording I know of, and it is a great one. This one goes back to 1978, and, in addition to it being a NYE show, it has some unique features that make it extra special. Remember, this came at a time when Petty was still working on the album that would be his real breakthrough, Damn the Torpedoes, but also would be much delayed in its release due to Petty's issues and legal problems with his record company (resulting in lawsuits, Petty's bankruptcy, and refusal to back down - see previous story related to this time). This show features previews of 2 new songs that would be on the new album (which would not be released until late 1979), 'Casa Dega' and 'Refugee', and of special note is that this is one of the only times 'Casa Dega' was ever played live at a Petty show (it was not included in the setlists of any shows post-album release). Another rarely played song featured at this show was 'Mystery Man' from their first album. So, here is a great NYE show featuring some rarely played gems in addition to the usual high-quality Petty songs and jams from this time. Since this show was relatively short (about an hour), I've added a couple more songs from the 1977-11-11 Capitol Studios show (in superb quality - 4 songs from this show were previously featured with the 1977 Record Plant post).
Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year, and a hope that 2018 is better than 2017.

FM Radio Broadcast recording (WXRT), very good quality
Mp3 @ 192 kbps

To salute the tradition of New Year's Eve rock concerts, here's another in our series of quality New Year's Eve shows. Here's the BoDeans in a classic NYE show from 1989, captured right at the band's peak years (after Home-1989, and shortly before the release of Black and White-1990). This excellent, but all too short set (surely edited down for radio broadcast) from Chicago was broadcast by WXRT-FM. As a bonus, a couple of vintage seasonal tracks (1987 Christmas single tracks) from the boys are also included, with originals, the lovely 'Christmas Time', and the uniquely strange and incessant jazz/punk/hip-hoppish rocker 'Jingle Bell Rock' (definitely NOT a remake of the familiar Bobby Helms classic of the same name). Happy New Year! to all, and let's hope 2017 is a much better year all around than 2016 was.

Happy New Year Everyone! For this year's New Year's Eve Concert presentation here is a unique show (in great quality) from Eric Clapton and some very special friends. Apparently, this is something that Eric has done regularly, that is, perform on New Year's Eve at a small venue in Woking with a different 'band' name each time, as part of a 'dry' NYE show (apparently, the show is partly sponsored by a local Alcoholics Anonymous chapter). In 2007, the band was called 'Complete Abandon', and in addition to such notable players as Gary Brooker and Andy Fairweather Low, also featured guest appearances by Joe Walsh, Ringo Starr, and Pete Townshend. The setlist consists primarily of old Rock 'n Roll and Blues standards and classics, and is certainly not a typical Clapton show, but it is a good old-fashioned rollickin' good time, and represents a unique one-of-kind show experience. So, here is Eric and Friends as Complete Abandon in a great NYE show. Enjoy!

Elvis Costello - 1981-12-31 - New York

Elvis Costello & The Attractions
1981-12-31 New Year's Eve Show

Soundboard, Good Quality Recording

Happy New Year, everyone! New's Year's Eve has always been a big night for rock concerts. I guess it's just very appealing to ring in the new year watching, listening, and singing along with your favorite music artists. There have been many legendary New Year's Eve shows and bootleg recordings available over the years, most notably featuring artists like Bruce Springsteen and The Grateful Dead, but also acts such as the Allman Brothers, Santana, U2, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc. I have previously featured 2 great NYE shows on this blog (The Kinks-1980 and The Band-1971). In looking back through my collection of NYE shows, for this NYE post I decided to go with a show that was a little different and not as readily available, and that also features another of my favorite artists that I have not yet posted anything by. So, here is a unique NYE show from Elvis Costello, from 1981, the time between his Almost Blue all-covers 'Country' album and his pop masterpiece Imperial Bedroom. This show features an extensive and eclectic setlist, including most of the songs (seldom-performed) from the underrated Almost Blue album, and several 'previews' of new songs ('Pidgin English', 'Kid About It', 'Shabby Doll', 'Human Hands', 'The Long Honeymoon', 'Beyond Belief') from the yet-to-be-released Imperial Bedroom, as well as the usual faves from that period. The set even includes Steve Nieve's intermission solo performance (which includes Auld Lang Syne). The set also includes old friend John McFee (from Clover and Elvis's first album) sitting in on pedal steel guitar for a few songs. A very unique and wonderful show. Sound quality is good, but not great (a bit tinny sounding, with not much low end), but the show is well worth the listen. In fact, this show, which is from the Palladium in NY, follows exactly one year later (at the same concert hall) as the Kinks 1980 NYE Palladium show, already posted here. How's that for continuity?

Excellent SBD recording (Wild Wolf Label)

Just found this great boot of The Band of shows from December 1971 & a rehearsal session as well. Great Stuff. Reminded me of how much I like these guys. Note: Big thanks to Strawdog at Dinostunz for this one! Will post some more from The Band soon.

2-CD Band bootleg issued in 2000 (Wild Wolf Label), with tracks from 1971 live recordings and rehearsal tapes. All previously unreleased/ uncirculated.

An absolute knockout 155+ minutes and an instant Hall-of-Famer.

Kinks 1980-12-31 Palladium NY (complete show)

The Kinks
December 31, 1980 The Palladium, New York, NY

FM Broadcast Recording (complete concert), excellent quality

New upgraded quality versions!
Now available in both lossless (FLAC) and upgraded mp3 (320 kbps) versions

More Live Kinks! This one is from their resurgent '80's rock comeback period. This is a more complete (and slightly higher quality) version of this show than many of the other boots that are out there (Another One for the Road, etc). It includes the encores of the 'All Day' reprise then going into a very brief 'Stop Your Sobbing' going into 'David Watts' and 'Pressure', with the show wrapping up with an extended hard-rockin' version of 'Superman' (that is a definite improvement over the original disco-tinged studio version). This show captures the band at the best of their revitalized, high-energy, '80's version of the group during the Low Budget tour.
