Sea ice extent in the Bering Sea is right at the 1991-2020 median in NSIDC data. In the past week the pack ice as moved back to north of the Pribilof Island but reformed in upper Bristol Bay. The area of reduced ice concentration in the Chukchi west of Point Barrow is common this time of year. @Climatologist49 @ZLabe

    Midnight Sun (Midnattssol‎)

(Description In AltText) - (Described At Great Length)

This is a colour seascape photo in landscape format of a seascape under an Arctic midnight sun. Norway (2018).

In the lower part of the image is the gentle inverted 'V' shape of the bow of a passenger ferry viewed from slightly above and behind. The deck inside the bow is in shadow but numerous deck fittings and winches are visible. On the prow is a short, about 2m, mast with a line fixed to the top and stretching upwards and behind the camera. Ahead of the ship's bow is a dark, near jet black, glassy sea, with just the smallest ripples disturbing the surface. To the right and ahead of the ship is what first looks like dusk scene with the sun having just dipped below the horizon. In the distance, perhaps 10km, is a mountain range running across the photo from left to right. There is some snow visible on the peaks. A few km to the right is part of a hillside descending into the sea. To the right of centre is a gap in the terrain where a bright orange or gold band of sky is visible on the horizon and is still just visible above the mountains and is reflected on the water nearly reaching the ship. The sky slowly graduates from orange through yellow to a pale cobalt blue at the top of the frame.

The scene is the midnight sun in arctic Norway at 70º North in the Ullsfjorden.

A new university will be built in Arviat, Nunavut, on the western shores of Hudson’s Bay, by 2030. It will be by and for Inuit peoples and all to learn the culture and language of the North and for people in the North to obtain post-secondary education in their language.

We're meant to be getting 12" of snow or more Sunday going into Monday, but right now it's sunny. Forecasts keep changing wildly so I'm not sure what to expect yet. That much snow will mean 2+ hours of shoveling, which I'm not looking forward to I have to confess.

Please know where your local warming shelter is, and how to get there. Stock up on dry and canned goods that don’t need heat or get your camping stove ready. Charge all your devices.

I found out an oil pipeline is running between me and the warming shelter, and they won’t let the pipeline go dark, cause it goes booooom if they do, so I’m likely to have power throughout.
