23 straight days with below 0c temperatures finally comes to an end tomorrow as we get up to 1c!

I don't know what to do with myself!

Gotta start by finding my smallest swim shorts and lay out on my snow covered lawn. Give the neighbours an eyeful! HAW!

    Summer is here!

Check on your friends that are over the age of 30 this week.

We're expecting a temperature swing from -30c today to +1c on Wednesday. A 30 degree swing may result in headaches, muscle pain and expedite signs of aging 😅 😎

          Stupid winter.

Note to self: Just because the air temperature reads only -9 doesn't mean all the stuff out in the barn isn't still supercooled :blobcattableflip:

Got the tractor running with the diesel heater blowing hot air on the oil filter for half an hour. Went out to fetch some wood and it died. Diesel-gel blocking the filter. Despite maximum dose of anti-gel additive in the tank. Should've heated the tank as well 🤦‍♂️

Old sailor trick when your tank is full of crud, pull the hose off the filter and stick it into a bottle of good fuel.

Got my wood but probably should've just stayed home instead. 😩

Clear diesel filter housing full of gelified diesel fuel. It looks like a yellow brain with windings. The output hose is removed.

Opened up engine hood of a small blue tractor. A 5 L clear plastic bottle with liquid diesel fuel (although barely so) is hanging next to the blocked fuel filter, the intake hose dipped into it. The background is snow.

Another little victory before noon today! Scored 20 pairs (40 individual packets) of hand warmers for just $10 on FB Marketplace!

I've never needed hand warmers before. But this long stretch of -30c temps have gotten the best of my warmest winter gloves.

Pretty cold. Discoveries I made this morning:

EVA rubber boots are no longer flexible and difficult to wear until your feet warm them up.

              LCD displays stop working.

The fancy microcontroller thermometer had an integer overflow and showed +64°C when it was... I guess -31 or 32? 😆

The -25°C winter wiper fluid is now solid, but it shouldn't damage the cars as it has contracted rather than expanded like water does.

The barn cat is still alive and got warm water and leftover porridge.

LRT reports -34°C in nearby Ukmergė and that diesel engines can't run on jelly. Apparently LPG vehicles had problems too, not enough Propane in the mix: lrt.lt/en/news-in-english/19/2

A picture from image search illustrating what happens to diesel fuel when it gets cold. A fuel filter is held up that is filled with yellow gel blocking it, looking like vanilla custard.

Finally had a pipe freeze. We have an unfinished basement that usually stays above 40℉, plus I monitor it, so I wasn't concerned. However, it looks like there are localized areas of the basement that get colder than the spot I'm monitoring, and last night it got down to -10℉ outside. Apparently that was enough. The problem was localized to one spot right at the pressure tank, and hitting it with a space heater for 10 minutes was enough to clear it. Nothing's damaged as far as I can see. Got lucky.

I guess I'll be doing some insulating. This is the longest, coldest cold snap I've experienced here and the bright side of it is that it's alerted me to a trouble spot as well as the limits of our current systems!

Good morning from Minneapolis where, frankly, I prefer this colder weather to the sloppy freeze-thaw cycles we experienced earlier this month.

Quite early on Hump Day it's -1℉; fair skies and fair barometer; light northwesterly winds; visibility 10 miles at the airport.

                          - Cold & dry through the remainder of the work week.

                          - Next chance of light snow arrives this weekend.

                          - Extended forecast features a warming trend into next week.

                          Where is everybody?

                          Be careful out there.

                                  26 January 2026

I’m up extra early this morning. Woke a little before four, got a drink of water, laid back down — but sleep wasn’t coming. So I got up again and let Charlie out into the backyard. Figured I’d kick back in the recliner for a bit, but it was clear sleep wasn’t in the cards, so I came in here. It happens like that now and then.

It’s cold this morning for Louisiana — 22°F. No wonder Charlie didn’t want to stay outside long. We had a bit of snow yesterday, just enough to dust the rooftops and evergreen trees. Mostly it rained, though, so I imagine schools and such are closed today out of caution for icy roads. The frozen water kind of ice. Folks around here aren’t exactly skilled at driving on slick pavement.

Icy roads should make things interesting at the two relatively new traffic circles in town. Even in good weather, some people struggle with those. You can almost see the gears turning: Do I go or wait? What does that big triangle mean? Are the cars in the circle supposed to let me in? It’s understandable — not everyone’s well traveled.

That brings me to a thought: there are people in this country who’ve never ventured far from home. Some haven’t even left their own state. And when you think about it, that explains a lot. Without exposure to different places and lives, all you know is what’s around you — where everyone’s circumstances look the same. Which reminds me of one of my sayings:
You only know what you know, and you don’t know what you don’t know.

“It is never too late to be what you might have been.” - George Eliot

“No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn.” - Hal Borland:

“Everybody is ignorant, only on different subjects.” - Will Rogers

“We don’t see things as they are; we see them as we are.” - Anaïs Nin

                                  Whispering Plumes

"The image captures a serene cluster of pampas grass, tall and elegant, with feathery plumes that rise like soft, wind-stirred torches. Each plume is a delicate brush of light tan and cream, their fibers fine and wispy, catching the air as if mid-whisper. They sway gently, not in chaos but in rhythm — a quiet choreography against a backdrop of lush green foliage, which frames the scene with depth and contrast.

The grasses stand tall, some arching slightly, their stems slender but sturdy. The light seems to soften as it touches them, giving the plumes a silken glow, like the down of a bird or the fringe of a well-worn shawl. There’s no sky in view — only the intimacy of the grasses and the green behind them, creating a sense of enclosure, like a hidden garden or a quiet corner of a field.

The overall mood is gentle, ornamental, and timeless, with the grasses offering both structure and softness. It’s a portrait of stillness in motion — nature’s way of being dramatic without shouting." - Microsoft Copilot

We're meant to be getting 12" of snow or more Sunday going into Monday, but right now it's sunny. Forecasts keep changing wildly so I'm not sure what to expect yet. That much snow will mean 2+ hours of shoveling, which I'm not looking forward to I have to confess.

"One thing I won't ever do again is build a snow dalek. I did that when we lived at our old house, as the kids were into Dr Who. I learnt that when snowdaleks start to melt they upset the neighbours."

IMAGES: On the left, the snowman is standing straight up and surrounded by fresh snow.

On the right, the same snow-Dalek has a lot of grass showing on the ground around it, suggesting a lot of time has passed and the snow has been melting.

After melting a bit, he snow-Dalek on the right is bending over and now looks an awful lot like a... penis.

at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) to avoid using the
word “ice” in its alerts to the public, out of concern that doing so could
provide fodder for online memes about the danger posed by Immigration

When it gets cold (or hot) i like to visit this infographic so I can be grateful 😂

An infographic titled “Solar System Temperature Chart” shows average planetary temperatures on a vertical thermometer scale from hot (red, top) to cold (blue, bottom). In the center, explanatory text reads: “Mean temperature is the average temperature over the whole surface of the rocky planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, and Pluto. For the gas giants, this is the average temperature at the 1-bar pressure level in the atmosphere, which is equal to the atmospheric pressure at sea level on Earth.”

Along the scale, Venus is hottest at about 867°F (464°C). Mercury follows at about 333°F (167°C). Earth is near the middle at about 59°F (15°C). Mars is colder at about −85°F (−65°C). Farther down are the gas giants: Jupiter about −166°F (−110°C), Saturn about −220°F (−140°C), Uranus about −320°F (−195°C), and Neptune about −330°F (−200°C). At the bottom, the dwarf planet Pluto is coldest at about −375°F (−225°C). Each planet is illustrated next to its position, and a note says the planets are not shown to scale.

There was a time when I’d throw on my running shoes and head out no matter what the weather decided to do. The only thing that ever stopped me was ice—no pun intended. Sometimes the roads get so slick that running isn’t recommended. That doesn’t really happen here, though.

                                                                                    Let’s be Frank.

What I meant was: let’s be real. Getting out there in freezing weather just isn’t for me anymore, and I rarely pick up the pace to a run or even a trot. Charlie and I stick to a leisurely 3 MPH, pausing whenever he finds something interesting. Well—he pauses. He’s got the rhythm down: he races ahead as far as the leash allows, finds a scent worth investigating, and then works his way back until the leash is stretched in the opposite direction.

Speaking of Charlie, it’s three minutes past mealtime. I’d better feed him.
                                                                                    …Mission accomplished.

I took a moment to look at the extended forecast for my area. It looks like cold weather will dominate the rest of January, with a chance of snow in the final days. And of course, the farther out the forecast goes, the closer it gets to reading chicken entrails. In any case, the cold will affect our walks. I could start going to a gym, but then what about Charlie? Besides, when I used to be a gym regular, I always seemed to be fighting off the sniffles. Probably wise to avoid that scene.

It must be a quarter mile up to the top (if one could get to the top) and 200ft across here at the base. The sun has risen and is lighting the trees on the far side of the falls (Little River) but the falls themselves appear blue as they are still in shade. I appeared blue as well, as I'm sure the temperature had dropped the closer we got to the water. The large, flat granite rocks make it easy to get quite close to the water. The water really does look like lace as it comes down the face of the large incline.

The sun is out, and the sky is clear—no clouds, like a summer day stripped of warmth. Yet the cold is undeniable. It presses through the window of my office, not as wind, but as a directional force—an invisible draft that moves without motion.

The heater struggled through the night, locked in a slow, losing battle. It held the line as best it could, waiting for the sun to rise and offer its quiet relief.

This morning’s earworm is ABBA—Waterloo in particular. I’ve been revisiting their songs these past few days, watching performances I never bothered with back then. Their music lived on the edge of my attention, peripheral but persistent. Listening now, I realize they were quite good.

One song—I can’t recall which—often played on the jukebox in the Canteen at Baumholder, Germany. We’d slip in during off-hours of training, and the tune was catchy enough to pair well with the beer, Apfelkorn, and Jägermeister we consumed in excess whenever the chance arose.

It’s remarkable how music dredges up memories long buried. They sit filed away in the mind, waiting. All it takes is a stimulus—a melody, a lyric, a rhythm—and suddenly the past is retrieved, vivid and alive again.

“My my, at Waterloo Napoleon did surrender Oh yeah, and I have met my destiny in quite a similar way The history book on the shelf Is always repeating itself

The leaves are thin and slightly translucent, catching the light like stained glass. Their edges are smooth, their shapes gently elongated, and they seem to glow with the quiet intensity of autumn’s farewell.

Behind this vibrant stem, the background dissolves into a soft blur of greens, blues, and warm oranges—like a watercolor wash that hints at distant foliage and fading light. The contrast between the sharp, vivid leaves and the dreamy backdrop makes the plant appear almost suspended in time, a solitary witness to the season’s turning. A thick layer of snow coats the ground, although the wind has mostly cleared the snow from the trees on either side. The sky is a heavy gray, which almost matches the color of the snow.

Maybe it’s the ceremonial shift—packing, unpacking, the subtle emotional toll of kinship witness.

Charlie, on the other hand, is thrilled to be back. The moment he steps inside after boarding, he checks that all his belongings are in place—his toys, his bed, his bowls—then trots straight to the back door. The backyard is his domain, and he reclaims it with quiet authority.

Today marks our first freeze of the season. The temperature sits at 31°F, or –0.56°C—just cold enough to frost the tips of the grass. I know the birds need extra energy in weather like this, and my feeders have been busy. I should go tend to them, but it’s brisk out there. 🥶 Not Minnesota cold, perhaps, but for Louisiana, it’s a proper chiller. Everything’s relative.

Sunday’s game was solid, even though the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers—my granddaughter’s team—lost to the Grambling State University Tigers. Maybe they call them the Lady Tigers. The outcome wasn’t unexpected: Grambling is a Division I team, while Ouachita competes in Division II.

What’s the difference? Good question. Funding, for one. Ouachita has a single coach; Grambling fields four or five. Division II programs tend to prioritize academics more heavily, allocating fewer resources to athletics. At least, that’s how I understood it when I looked it up.

Division I and Division II teams don’t usually face off. Sunday’s matchup was an exhibition game—designed to give both teams valuable experience as they prepare for the season ahead.

"A cluster of blooming white crepe myrtle flowers bursts into delicate ruffles, each petal soft and crinkled like handmade lace. The blossoms are luminous, their snowy white hue catching the light with a gentle shimmer. At the heart of each flower, bright yellow stamens rise like tiny suns, adding warmth and contrast to the cool petals.

Surrounding the open blooms are tight green buds, round and expectant, hinting at more blossoms to come. The buds form a textured halo around the flowers, like a promise of continued bloom. The background is softly blurred, allowing the intricate details of the flowers to stand out in sharp relief.

The composition feels intimate and alive—like a close-up whisper from the garden. The image captures not just the beauty of the crepe myrtle, but its moment of emergence, where bloom and potential coexist." - Microsoft Copilot

I just glanced at the temperature on my taskbar—47º outside. That’s the coldest morning of the fall so far this year. I know, I know… folks up in Minnesota are probably thinking, “Big whoop. That’s shirt-sleeve weather.”

I lived in Minnesota for a while during my Army days. I’d just been reassigned from Germany and thought I understood cold. Minnesota politely—and thoroughly—redefined that understanding. I drove up from Tennessee after flying in from Wyoming. That month was a blur of relocations, a sovereign zigzag across the country. But that’s a story for another scroll.

A few days after arriving in Minnesota, I had to fly to Fort Sheridan in Chicago to sign in. I was Regular Army, assigned to a Reserve battalion. On arrival, I rented a car, drove to a certain building on post, walked in, probably handed over my orders, signed a book, turned around, got back in the rental, and drove straight back to Minnesota. Crazy, right?

When I returned to Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport, the temperature had dropped. On advice, I’d parked my car over at neighboring Fort Snelling and taken a taxi to the airport. It was late at night. The moment I stepped outside, the cold hit me like a wall—literally took my breath away. I don’t recall the exact temperature, only that it was very cold. 🥶

I jumped into the first taxi I saw and headed for Fort Snelling. The parking lot was vast and empty, save for my car sitting alone in the middle, blanketed in snow. I asked the driver to wait until I got it started. He did. And just like that—I had arrived.

The photograph is rendered in black and white, stripping away distraction and focusing the eye on form, motion, and contrast. Each bird’s feathers are crisply defined, their bodies angled slightly forward as if gliding through a moment suspended in time. They fly one behind the other, equidistant, mirroring each other’s posture like twin emissaries in a silent ballet. The absence of background detail creates a sense of purity and focus, as if the birds are suspended in a ceremonial void. Their downward wing stroke evokes both power and grace—an elegant descent or a poised hover.
