An evolution in my DIY learning and adventure: I’m handy with plumbing, except for supply side stuff. But I’m determined to install our new water softener on my own doing some copper pipe work and Pex A, too.

Today’s 🤯= I know NPT is the standard for pipe thread. But today I learned MIP (male iron pipe) and FIP (female) are actually NPT. Why the hell aren’t they called MNPT and FNPT?!? Also the fittings are brass, not iron!

Finally had a pipe freeze. We have an unfinished basement that usually stays above 40℉, plus I monitor it, so I wasn't concerned. However, it looks like there are localized areas of the basement that get colder than the spot I'm monitoring, and last night it got down to -10℉ outside. Apparently that was enough. The problem was localized to one spot right at the pressure tank, and hitting it with a space heater for 10 minutes was enough to clear it. Nothing's damaged as far as I can see. Got lucky.

I guess I'll be doing some insulating. This is the longest, coldest cold snap I've experienced here and the bright side of it is that it's alerted me to a trouble spot as well as the limits of our current systems!

      Delicious Hair Cake [SENSITIVE CONTENT]

Sauna wasn't draining so well, so I got to retrieve this souvenir from the drain 🥳

A drain cover nearly plugged with a cake of hair and soap and dirt. It's held up by a gloved hand in front of some snow and trees. A few hairy, soapy tendrils dangle down decoratively.

Anyone have experience with PEX plumbing and fittings in water baseboard heaters?

I think one of my baseboards has a slow leak and is damaging my basement floor.

I cranked the heat on but didn't see any visible leaks. Wonder if it's only doing it occasionally?

I don't know how to use these and at this point I'm afraid to ask.

              A weird one for you.

There is a ubiquitous pipe support which consists of several parts. The base is a bracket with two screws and a central deep threaded hole. Into that a semicircular support is screwed, using an attached threaded bolt. A matching semicircular band is placed on top and is in turn secured with two bolts. A pipe runs through the circular opening.

The assembly is known as a Munsen clip. The question is — who (or what) was Munsen?

Replacement pressure switch arrived and I fixed the air compressor.

Surprising amount of plumbing on it. All fittings matched except the small pipe on the bottom had to have its flange cut off as the new one needed an olive instead.

Also surprising, no air leak on the first try :blobcatsurprised:

Top view of an air compressor pressure switch (case removed) and associated plumbing, consisting of a pressure relief valve, two air hose connectors, a pressure reducer and two gauges, with two more connections not shown on the bottom.

Two pressure switches, left the broken one with thread sealant on it, right a new one of slightly different construction.

The same two pressure switches, now showing their electrical side. The left one is missing both contactors and the flimsy plastic stem that they ride on, which also is what the on/off mushroom presses down on. The right one is of similar design, but has all the pieces.

The reassembled pressure switch, now with housing closed. Both gauges show 8 bar, just at the start of the red line.
