Dagnabbit! In this, the year of our Lord 2026, you would think that the days of screenreader users such as myself getting stopped cold by #captcha on websites would be long behind us. But, alas, such is not the case. I’ve talked a lot about my battles with #Bluesky and captcha, which I ultimately lost. This afternoon, I had decided to give some financial love to my local newspaper, the Knoxville News Sentinel. While I think that paywalls are evil, there are times when I actually want to read articles that are behind them. Anyway, I was happily filling out all the info, and at the very last step, there it was: captcha. And there wasn’t even anything to solve! It was just…there. And of course it wouldn’t let me get past it. Actually, I think captcha is more evil than paywalls, come to think of it.
"The #CAPTCHA lays on its back, its squares baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over, but it can't.
Not without your help. But you're not helping."

Smashing Magazine: The Accessibility Problem With Authentication Methods Like CAPTCHA. “CAPTCHAs were meant to keep bots out, but too often, they lock people with disabilities out, too. From image classification to click-based tests, many ‘human checks’ are anything but inclusive. There’s no universal solution, but understanding real user needs is where accessibility truly starts.”
