There is particularly annoying about services that allows you to sign up, pay and use the service fully online.... only to require you to phone them if you want to cancel.

Todays culprit is the TV license people.

TikTok steht wegen suchtförderndem Design unter EU-Prüfung. Infinite Scroll, Autoplay, Push-Reize.

How would I proceed if I wanted to find out if processes my personal data based on an anonymous contract which I had to enter into in order to use my Android TV cable box (not connected to my Google account)?

And how can I retract from that contract (which the Google terms allow for) separate from any of my Google accounts?

I wonder if there's a psychological price that a web developer has to overcome to make a non-trivial web page with no pop-ups of any kind. It seems like a compulsion.

At least in the way I use computers as a low vision person, pop-ups are extraordinarily anti-accessibility. Yes, even tooltips and alt-hovertext, depending on how they're done. Some websites are close to unusable because of these things.

Fuck, no, Apple. I was forced to update to iOS 26 due to lack of security updates for 18 on devices that can run 26 (i.e., due to extortion) but you’re not infecting my Mac with Liquid Ass.

Notice the dark pattern of pestering you in hopes you will accidentally hit the “Restart” button even though you’ve specifically turned off auto updates. Microsoft-level disrespect for consent here.

(Not surprising from a company that gives golden awards to fascists.)

Continue, or "try it now" a popup from Gmail now asks, offering to compose your next message with Gemini. I guess the tiny "x" is the "fuck no" button?

A popup message from Gmail tries to convince you to let Gemini AI write your next email. "Help me write" it says up top. "Draft emails confidently with Gemini. Gemini can help you write your drafts in seconds and quickly refine them." Below that are two buttons: Continue, and Try it Now. The latter option is selected by default.

Wow. So not only has Apple lost any design culture it had, it also doesn’t give a shit about your security either any longer. This is the mother of all dark patterns right here.

Anyone know if this is the same for macOS?

Mozilla's new CEO is all-in on AI regardless of what Firefox users want: https://lwn.net/Articles/1050826/
Third: Firefox will grow from a browser into a broader ecosystem of trusted software. Firefox will remain our anchor. It will evolve into a modern AI browser and support a portfolio of new and trusted software additions.
He says the word "trust" a whole bunch of times yet intends to turn an otherwise nice web browser into a slop-slinging platform. I don't expect this will work out very well for anyone.

"It will evolve into a modern AI browser" sounds like a threat. Good way to start off on the right foot, new Mozilla CEO (sarcasm).

Maybe I'm being melodramatic, but the fact that you can't reliably use Downdetector to detect whether or not Cloudflare is down because it depends on Cloudflare is a microcosm of so much of what's wrong with modern digital life.

Downdetector wants to issue a cloudlfare challenge, but cannot because of the current cloudflare outage. Instead of letting me through or supplying a useful error message, this is what it says. As if I, and my ad blocker, are to blame.

I am 100% convinced just from my own experiences that tech companies are knowingly, purposely putting "AI" buttons and links near commonly-used buttons or links in user interfaces to encourage accidental clicking and increase their usage numbers. AI usage numbers are dismal, and surveys repeatedly show large majorities of people do not want these features.

At some point Google Drive started preventing the context menu from appearing when you right-click something. I installed a browser extension that re-enabled this function. The modern web is quite tiresome.

I sent feedback to Atlassian yesterday complaing about the "AI Assistant" they recently added to JIRA. Apparently you need an admin to disable the feature for everyone and cannot disable it for yourself. A very suspicious dark pattern.

There's also an "AI summary" feature for tickets that looks very easy to accinetally select. Another dark pattern.

                                    Very disappointed to see this.
