I am from Iran. For years, we've been blocked by the US sanctions. These sanctions didn't hurt the regime much. But it does hurt me people greatly. The US isn't shy about doing whatever they want with other nations for their benefits or in the name of fighting terrorism.

It isn't monsters. It isn't failure. It isn't even hardship. I've survived enough of that to know it passes.

In 1993, a mathematician named Eric Hughes sat down and wrote a declaration of his own.
It was not about a king. It was about privacy, and the machines that were quietly ending it. He called it A Cypherpunk's Manifesto. The core idea was simple and radical: if you want privacy in a digital world, no one is going to grant it to you. You have to build it yourself.
His most famous line is three words long. "Cypherpunks write code." Not petition. Not protest. Not wait for permission. Build the thing that makes the freedom real, then give it away so no one can take it back.
Fifteen years later, Satoshi did exactly that. Bitcoin was not a demand that governments fix the money. It was working code that fixed it, released into the open where no one could recall it.
Here is the lesson that outlived the manifesto. Rights you have to ask for can be revoked. Rights you build into running code are yours to keep.
Independence was never granted. It gets written. Sometimes in ink, sometimes in software.

I'm not a fan of bureaucracy.
I see the friction, the delays. Sometimes, it feels like an "industry" built to create pointless jobs. Yet, there are moments when regulation is vital.
Europe gives us the DMA, the GDPR, and a wave of other rules meant to protect us. Are they imperfect? Absolutely. They often overcomplicate things without giving us a real advantage. But it's something.
I don't believe in racing without a finish line. Progress is good, but not "at all costs". Every action has a reaction. We should be aware of it.
The EU system tries to safeguard citizens. Other hyper-growth countries take a different path, and the consequences can be brutal. Apparently more liberal, but only apparently. Imagine an American friend being denied health coverage because an AI on their device (or in the "cloud") flagged a text where they mentioned having a "persistent headache".
I've recently seen the real-world harm that targeted commercial algorithms can inflict on people in moments of fragility. That’s not the future I want.
Yes, Europe needs to accelerate.
But it must hold onto its core values. Leaner processes, sure, but zero compromises.
Just because my car can top well over 200 km/h doesn't mean I should drive at that speed everywhere, just for the sake of productivity.

rsync thing has me thinking about the difference between the "free as in beer" model of free software and the "free as in freedom" model the FSF originally put forward. There are important differences, and it's meaningful when a project changes from one model to the other, which is one way to narrativize what's happened to rsync.I think "free as in beer" software is more appropriately called "Libertarian and Open Source Software", or LOSS. Among other things it involves no obligations on other people, and expects no obligations in return (*). But this means it's an everyone for themselves, anti-communitarian endeavor. We should be honest about this. We should also be honest when a project changes state from FOSS to LOSS, because that's a meaningful change, and actually is a loss in my view.
I continue to believe that enthusiastic embrace of AI/LLM coding tools is a leading indicator of an impending FOSS→LOSS transition.
It seems to me at least one driver of the uproar over rsync is that a bunch of people thought it was a FOSS project but it had, in a short period of time, converted into a LOSS project and the shock was jolting (understandably). As a FOSS project, rsync served a community function, leading people to depend on it, make assumptions about its longer-term stability, and so on. Those are reasonable expectations of a communitarian project. As a LOSS project, rsync is under no obligations to anyone and the maintainer(s) can change the software at any time, for any reason, at their discretion alone. It seems rsync is a LOSS.

Microsoft's #Azure #cloud runs on Linux #servers. Microsoft generates the majority of its #revenue through cloud #services. In other words, it makes use of free software—specifically, from the open-source community project—without contributing to or supporting it in a meaningful way. On the contrary, Microsoft has been fighting the spread of Linux on the #desktop with #Windows from the very beginning. However, the company has learned how to profitably market free software. Unfortunately, this is a sign that die-hard capitalists are incapable of learning. Their greed for profit blinds them to the common good. Since Windows now accounts for only about 5% of Microsoft’s business model, it is used solely to keep customers within the Microsoft ecosystem and sell them cloud services. Meanwhile, Windows 11 is getting worse and worse, partly due to the use of AI.
The only company worse than that is #Nvidia, which also uses Linux but nevertheless actively prevents the development of decent open-source drivers for Nvidia #hardware. So while the #company understands the benefits of Linux, it still actively resists contributing to this #collaborative #project.
Capitalism in its final stages—and, unfortunately, one of the reasons why humanity is heading so rapidly toward the #collapse of #civilization.

Key Findings
• #Webloc is a global #geolocation #surveillance system that monitors hundreds of millions of people based on data purchased from consumer apps and digital advertising. It was developed by Cobwebs Technologies and is now sold by its successor #Penlink.
• In collaboration with the European investigative #journalism platform #VSquare, we reveal that Hungarian domestic #intelligence has been using Webloc since at least 2022 and continues to use it as of today. Webloc customers also include the national police in El Salvador.
• U.S. customers include #ICE, the U.S. #military, #Texas Department of Public Safety, #DHS West #Virginia, #NYC district attorneys, and several #police departments in #LosAngeles, #Dallas, #Baltimore, #Tucson, #Durham and in smaller cities and counties like City of Elk Grove and Pinal County.
• Based on the responses to 96 #freedom of information requests we conclude that governments in #Europe and the U.K. are highly nontransparent about their potential use of ad-based surveillance.
• Cobwebs Technologies has links to the spyware vendor Quadream through Cobwebs Technologies founder Omri Timianker, who now oversees the international operations of Penlink.
• Webloc is sold as an add-on product to the social #media and #web intelligence #system Tangles. Based on technical #analysis and other sources we show that Tangles and other products developed by #Cobwebs Technologies are used in many countries across the globe.
• We briefly investigate another Cobwebs product named #Trapdoor that appears to help trick victims into revealing information. Our analysis leads us to believe that Trapdoor can help facilitate the #deployment of #malware on devices.

Example: Americans cannot travel to #Germany without a passport, which is government permission to temporarily leave the country. Yet Americans say they are free.
