Yesterday was the end of Carnevale from the home of our artform, Italy! But it was also lunarsolar new year to start the Year of the Horse! To mark the intertwined occasion, here's a clip from a short commedia dell'arte we staged virtually in 2021 featuring foolish confusion over a horse dressage! We should probably use this costume more (and we did recently review a few Japanese comedic theatre kyōgen that included either a person disguising as a horse or an actual horse character still played by a human actor). So perhaps... this is the year?!

This linocut shows how I imagine the great white stork of European folklore, who carries babies to new parents. The stork is printed in a teal coloured ink on white coloured Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper, with little square coloured confetti inclusions. The stork is quite stylized, inspired by ancient Chinese art, and not an attempt to accurately portray Ciconia ciconia, the white stork, and holds a baby in a sack in its beak.
2026 is certainly coming in with some attitude.

Tonight, I'm taking a small break from opera to listen to something that has become a wonderful tradition. I love waltzes and Viennese composers, and I've been looking forward to this for awhile. It's also really the only time I can handle loud music, symbol crashes, etc. It's just so happy and festive that I can't help but enjoy it!

Well…2025 was the year the masks came off the old system: nobody is pretending it’s there to help us, or that those who have stolen the reins of power have any intention of ‘saving the planet’, still less resolving the horrors of inequity or anything at all but feeding the ravenously hungry ghost of capitalism.
So how do we bring power to those with wisdom and wisdom to those with power? If we have the destructive capacity of gods, how do we find in ourselves the compassion, prudence and wisdom of gods? What does it take to lay the foundations for emergence into a new system – one that we’d be proud to leave to the generations that come after us?

2025. It was a good year for The Confused Greenies of Players' Patchwork Theatre Company. Though we did not stage as many performances or travel to as many places as the prior year, what we did was majestic including our first commedia dell'arte pastorale historic fantasy style plays and our first fully staged reading, a sudden and unexpected giant whale, and then wrapping up with writing dozens of new three-act scenarios for future productions!
This year was tough in many ways and stressful. But it's always been our goal to make the world better one laugh, one smile at at a time!

I used to watch the SyFy Twilight Zone marathon on NYE and NYD. I don't have cable so I tend to watch it some other way (I have the whole series on my Plex, or as someone [Ash? Jonathan?] noted it's always playing on PlutoTV). I'm watching the latter today and "He's Alive" is on.
"He's Alive" is an unflinching look at the idea 'It can happen here'. Dennis Hopper brilliantly plays a proto-Nazi growing his influence in the USA, with a dark figure at his back. An older man, Ernst, who knew him as a child, gives a stirring speech (around the 35 minute mark) as Stephen Mille-- I mean Peter Vollmer is holding a rally. He reminds the crowd what this rhetoric really is: Racism, Fascism, Genocide. Hate. And that we've seen it all before and yes, it can happen here.
Anyway, it's a great episode and you should watch it (S4E4) if you have not. Or watch it again given the state of America right now. Most clips concentrate on the dark figure, but the old man's speech is, to me, the best part. That's Serling speaking through this character. (*cough* https://tinyurl.com/yc38jxat )
But all this is leading to what I wanted to share. Rod Serling, creator and one of the primary writers on the show, was a staunch advocate for racial equality and for calling out the failings of society to eradicate systemic racism [then] 100 years after Lincoln.
In 1964 Serling wrote this speech for Dick Van Dyke to deliver alongside MLK Jr. (whom Serling later eulogized saying "In his grave, we praise him for his decency - but when he walked amongst us, we responded with no decency of our own... Now we acknowledge his compassion - but we exercised no compassion of our own." https://tinyurl.com/5trpyhnh)

Well, here we are — the last day of 2025. What can I say about the year except: wow, let’s not do that again. Not really, though. Plenty of good things happened, and most of the good was personal, which is its own kind of blessing. So for me, the year wasn’t bad at all, as long as I avoided looking at the news. Here’s to a happy 2026 🍷.
I got out of bed in time for my morning nap, but skipped it in favor of coming in here and writing to you. No worries — that nap will find me eventually.
It just occurred to me that 21st‑century folks really missed out on dial‑up internet. Oh, they were alive, but not yet part of the online world; they were still reaching for the grab toys in their cribs. They never truly experienced the “krrr–krrr–WHEEEEeee–chk–chk–SKREEE–shhhhh…” of a modem handshake. Those were the days — exciting, but slow. You remember waiting for an image to download, watching it materialize pixel by pixel on a cathode‑ray‑tube monitor. It felt like magic.
And with those early telephone modems, as you recall, we had to choose between using the internet or using the telephone — unless you were fancy enough to have two phone lines, which most of us weren’t. Cell phones existed, but they weren’t quite a thing yet. That would come soon enough.
Today we carry the internet in our back pockets, and sometimes even on our wrists like a super Dick Tracy watch. It’s worth noting that many 21st‑century folks turned 25 this year. When I was 25, the internet and handheld computers were still the stuff of science‑fiction dreams.
