Brooklyn, February 2026. In the middle of a blizzard. Silence as I walked down the block. The road hidden under a thick blanket of white, interrupted by a dark stripe of tire tracks receding into hazy distance. A line of parked cars, thickly encrusted with snow like sloping white hills. Trees with dark slender limbs outlined in white. Blank wall of sky. A streetlight far off, glowing dimly. Winter in full force, transforming a bustling city into the silent middle of nowhere.
I looked out the window, and squirrel friend was giving me the, "I'm hungry! Where's my breakfast!" look, so I rushed outside with some walnuts and hazelnuts. When I came back into the house, crow friend was eating the hazelnuts. So I quickly put together some crow food and brought that outside (corn, peanuts, sunflower seeds, leftover cat food, suet bits). Then I came back into the house and my Blue Jay buddy had beaten everyone to the feast, but now the crow is back with a friend!

The snow covers the sliding door up to the handle with a drift on the right side going up to the slanted roof of the garage. Another drift in the back is up against the wooden railings. As a belated public service announcement, here is some fairly bland reporting on snow removal tools. If you live in Toronto, where 50+ cm of the white just fell, all shovels and snow blowers will be sold out in every store by 8:42 am. Pro tip - salt doesn't work on 2 feet of snow. Here in Belle Ewart, where we received 20ish cm from #MotherNature, I will be using 2 regular shovels, one with an ergonomic sexy curve, and my handy single stage battery blower. The electric blower struggles with the chunky heavy stuff the evil plow operator dumps at the end of my driveway but so far it hasn't been defeated. Remember to lift with your legs, which I've never seen anyone do.

On the bright side, lately I've been doing a lot of informal thinking while shoveling snow. I'm turning over an informal argument grounded on Chaitin incompleteness that if our physical universe has continuous space-time, then we must make non-computable leaps in our theories in order to increase the fidelity of our understanding. "Artificial scientists" running on computers will always have inescapable limits that don't apply to human beings. It's exactly the sort of wacky thing that makes for good shovel thinking: it passes the time, and there might be something in there that's more than passing theoretical fancy.

Almost always just getting out into the snow and the woods is enough to make everything feel better.
