New Post at Paranormal Romantics

It's the 1st of the month. My turn at Paranormal Romantics where I share my thoughts on the television series Snowpiercer. It's a post-apocolyptic dystopian thriller. What would you do to survive?

GUEST - Linda Nightingale #NewRelease THE SUMMONING #GiveAway

Please welcome back Linda Nightingale. A friend from the supportive group Authors Helping Authors and fellow contributor to Paranormal Romantics blog, Linda writes entertaining paranormal romances. Instead of coming herself, Linda sent Eyrael, the main character from THE SUMMONING. Be sure to check out the Giveaway at the end of the post. Now, let's meet Eyrael.

Please tell us about yourself.

My name is Eyrael, and I am the God of Wind and Sea. In my world, I am pure spirit. We do not have bodies but are endless energy traveling through time and space. That is in my dimension.  When I am summoned across into this dimension as the witch Heather did this time, I take on a physical form, but I can still alter that body at will. When she summoned me, I formed from the ocean in which she was drowning, into a man, but that shape frightened her, so I morphed into a winged black stallion, the form preferred by the People, and it seemed by the witch because she began to trust me.  Of course, she had to do so. We were in a deadly gamble to escape the evil Shaman and his band of warriors. You see in this dimension I, too, can die.

What does your family think of this ‘crossing over’?

My brother is also summoned by the People and to them he is the God of Earth and Fire. Sofiel and I do not agree on many things, particularly the greed and hunger for power of the new Shaman, Taino. He leads the People into closer relationship with Sofiel.  In their dimension, true to his dominion, Sofiel is a dark and forbidding god. He calls for human sacrifice. I abhor the thought of death to any of my People. He drinks blood sacrifices. I do not. My bound elements are light and air not dark and heavy.

What do you enjoy about physicality in this dimension?

Pleasure such as seeing, feeling, hearing—the five senses taken for granted by Man. In my dimension, I can experience seeing, hearing and touch but at home we are, more or less, emotionless except for pure Joy. I love beautiful women, sex, the sweet feeling of love and a good strong whiskey.

If you could give the younger version of yourself advice what would it be?

I am neither young nor old. I am ageless, here and now, there and forever. If I were to heed my own advice, it would have been to fall in love with one woman and father sons on her alone. The ways of the past encouraged me to fertilize many women among the People.

Who are the People?

And obscure branch of the Arawak Indians who migrated to Jamaica from South America under my auspices and protection on the long trek. It hurts that now with Taino as Shaman, they are turning from me to the darkness.

Do you know if this book Linda Nightingale has written about your struggles was driven by plot or character?

Definitely character.  Heather began our story, and when she called her over to rescue her from drowning in my Sea, I continued our tale with the writer.

Tell us about this Sofiel, God of Earth and Fire.

At home, my brother is as I, content and joyful, but when he is summoned, he changes the moment he transforms.  I attribute this to the influence of the young Shaman who wants nothing more than to be at Sofiel’s side when they prevail over me.  The fool doesn’t realize I’d welcome him as my Shaman if he would renounce his dark ways.  I do not feel him capable of becoming something he, at heart, is simply not.

Heather Morique is a witch. The problem is she doesn’t know it. Her husband Jahill was a refugee from an obscure branch of the Arawak Indians. After his death, mysterious whispers lure her to his homeland of Jamaica. Soon, she finds herself in a web of secrets, lies and illusions.
Jahill’s people worship Eyrael, the God of Wind and Sea, and his brother Sofiel, the God of Fire and Earth. The new Shaman has pitted brother against brother, and these two powerful spirits from an alternate universe fight to become the tribe’s ruling deity. Will light or darkness reign?
When Heather unwittingly summons Eyrael, these two unlikely soul mates face a dangerous fate.  The chemistry between them is more disturbing than the long-buried secrets.

Excerpt:

Like storm clouds cloaking a sunny day, darkness gathered in the room. Heather lifted her gaze from the computer screen. Smoke sullied the air, crawling across the floor in a black mist. No scent of burning came from the billowing murky fog. Her hands froze on the keyboard. An icy shiver melted down her spine. The gulls’ cries and the normal sounds of life had quieted. The house was as still as a tomb. Her skin prickled, goosebumps pebbling her skin. A shudder leapt over her. Fear seized her in its cold, cold hands. Her heart beat a rapid staccato in her ears.
“Heather,” a dark voice called softly.
She started violently, whirled to see who’d spoken and shuddered again. No one. Just the scentless smoke. The hair at her nape quivered. Danger lurked just out of sight.
With trembling fingers, she guided the mouse, clicking on save. She set the laptop aside, intending to rise, but found herself paralyzed as fire flickered to life five feet from where she sat. Sofiel. The battle had come. Why hadn’t she trusted her gut feeling?
Please don’t let him kill me now I’m finally happy. Please don’t let me lose my baby.
Nausea burned her throat, her stomach twisting into a knot of terror. She jumped to her feet, focused on saving her child. Fire nibbled at the black mist swirling around her feet. A tongue of flame licked her ankle. Ignoring the stinging pain, she charged toward the door. A crimson blaze climbed the walls. She’d taken three desperate strides when fire consumed the exit. She was trapped with the dark spirit who wanted her dead.

I'm Back

It's been way too long since my last Monday Morning Musing post. If you've followed any of my posts on other blogs (Paranormal Romantics and The Roses of Prose) you know my summer was chaos. Our no-longer-in-Arizona family, Son, DIL, Toddler Girl, and their two dogs--Big (Lab) and Bigger (Great Dane) lived with us for two months while they searched for a house nearby. Happily, we all survived and are still friends. LOL What a wonderful bonding, esp. with Toddler Girl.

Knowing that our routine would be non-existent, I decided I wouldn't stress out over not writing, that included this weekly blog. I just enjoyed each day. They now have a house (about 2 miles from us). We all have our own space again. Although Son and DIL had jobs to go to each day, our house isn't large. In fact, it's just right for two people. But . . .

The best part was getting to know our daughter-in-law better. I am so blessed. Smart Son for marrying her. The time with Toddler Girl was marvelous. Watching her vocabulary grow and her imagination develop made me so proud. Signs of the "terrible two's" began near the end of their stay. Thank Goodness. LOL She's still such a sweetie. The older grandkids had a great time with her. I wasn't surprised at how the oldest (10) enjoyed playing with her cousin. The surprise came when I saw how nurturing the 7.5 year old was. I thought he would (sort of) ignore her since she's a girl. He didn't. He helped her make a spaceship out of a box, helped her decorate it, and together they "zoomed" into outer space. As for Toddler Girl, she is madly in love with her cousins.

Now that everyone is settled (sort of) in their respective homes, school has started, and so have routines. I'm back to writing in the mornings. Before summer began, I was writing a novella that takes place in Far Haven (the fictional resort town on Lake Michigan, home of Alex O'Hara, PI). I was a little over a third into the story. Now I have the last big scene to write and the ending. Then it's editing, revising, and proofing before it goes to my freelance editor. I hope to have From Jailbirds to Wedding Bells available in November.

Along with keeping stress out of my life by not writing this blog, I also didn't plan to write much during the family stay. Then one of the authors who's part of the group newsletter I participate in thought of a great idea. (She thought it was great. LOL) We'd all submit a short story for an anthology that we'd give away to new subscribers to our newsletter, because we all have a short story or two laying around. Right? Not me. And I had to write it in a month. Yikes! I took another character from Far Haven and wrote a short mystery. As soon as it's available, I'll let you know.

I lined up a few book festivals to participate in. They are listed on my website. This Saturday (Sept. 23) I'll be at the Alpena (MI) Book Festival. I did this all-day event last year and had a wonderful time. If you're in the area, please stop by and say hi.

This Wednesday, I'll begin a new venture as a contributor to an online magazine, Pandora's Box Gazette. My column on Family Life will appear on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.

Busy, busy, busy. I'm having a great time writing and more fun talking (either in person or online) with so many terrific people.

How was your summer?

Going to the Moon Again

Today is my turn at Paranormal Romantics blog. I write about SpaceX's proposed flight to the moon in 2018. Exciting, especially for me as a science fiction writer. Come on over and see.

Meet Author Abigail Owens

I'm so please to welcome Abigail Owens to the blog. I met Abigail through the Paranormal Romantics blog. She's an entertaining and faithful blogger.

Welcome, Abigail. Tell us about yourself.

Oh gosh, let’s see… I am an author—paranormal and contemporary romance are my genres. I publish paranormal under the pen name Abigail Owen. Contemporary is about to start publishing more under a new pen name which I have yet to choose. Lol. Other titles include Star Wars geek, chocoholic, spreadsheet lover, organize house obsessor, wife, mom, total nerd. J

Where can readers find you? (social media, etc.)

How long does it take you to write a book?

Each book is different. For example, I find last books in a series take me much longer than most books. Months of agonizing. But, in general, I finish the first draft in 3-6 weeks and do additional drafts and editing in 3-6 weeks. At the moment I’m attempting to finish a book—including all the drafting and perfecting, in 4 weeks. That’ll be a stretch, but I’m determined. J

What does your family think of your writing?

I think they think I’m nuts. Lol. But they’d never tell  me so. I get amazing support from my family—especially my husband who might not get the obsession or read my genre, but let’s me chase my dream and listens when I tell him all the nutty details of the process. I think my daughter wants to be a writer. She’s constantly coming up with stories and writing them down. J And my mom edits all my self-published stuff and reads every book even if she doesn’t edit it. I love my family!

Where do you start when writing? Research, plotting, outline, or...?

I am 90% pantser / 10% plotter. It’s an evolving process for me. My first completed book, Blue Violet, was 100% pantser. In fact, I didn’t even write the scenes in order, but skipped around. I do a lot more preparing ahead of time these days, though less to do with plot and more with understanding my character’s development and what my start and end points need to be. Maybe a few points in the middle so I know where I’m aiming. After some amount of preparation, I write the first draft, and my characters take that opportunity to tell me how to get from A to B (and sometimes B becomes C).

What did you learn from writing your first book?

Ahh! Everything. J Not really, but it feels like it. I learned how to finish a book (after 20+ tries). Then I learned about editing. I found a fantastic content editor who taught me things like pacing, no talking heads, avoiding clichés, and a ton of other tips and tricks which I’ve learned to incorporate into my writing as much as possible. I laugh when I read the first draft of Blue Violet What a difference!

What are some jobs you've done that would end up in a book?

Fun question! My life as a data analyst is coming out in my current WIP. I’d love to incorporate my stint working for a dry cleaners, or maybe my time as a Sonic car hop in a book. I have some good stories from those. I still have waitress dreams, so maybe that’ll end up in one someday.

If I were a first time reader of your books, which one would you recommend I start with and why?

I’d recommend starting with Andromeda’s Fall or, if you want something sweeter, Blue Violet. They are book award-winning books and each kicks off a series. Although, my personal favorite is Tieryn’s Fury. But that one is 3rd in the series, so don’t start with it. Lol.

What two authors would we find you reading when taking a break from your own writing?

Yikes! I can’t limit it to 2. Lately I’ve been pouring through books by T.S. Joyce (paranormal) and by Noelle Adams (contemporary). I also recently discovered Samanthe Beck (contemporary) and love her characters! And I’ll always read anything by Rebecca Zanetti (paranormal), Lucy Monroe (contemporary), and Suzanne Wright (paranormal).

Tell us about your latest release.

A witch hunter, a witch hiding in plain sight under his nose, triplet preteen witches who need a mother, and a ton of secrets. What could go wrong?

Bait N’ Witch is my third book in the Legendary Consultants series. While the series is probably best read in order, each book can stand alone. So no need to start at the beginning if you don’t want. J Each book in the series features a different paranormal creature and a different love story. Book 1 was demigods and an office romance. Book 2 was werewolves and a marriage of convenience. There are two short stories, as well—one with ghosts and one with psychics. And now Bait N’ Witch with is, of course, witches with a nanny love story. I had a LOT of fun writing this one. Rowan, my heroine, appeared in Her Demigod Complex, and I couldn’t wait to finally get to her story!

Bait N’ Witch
(Legendary Consultants #3)
By Abigail Owen

Rowan McAuliffe has been hiding most of her life. Secretly trained in her powers by an unusual source, she’d been taught not to trust anyone. Especially other witches. However, after she was forced to perform a hateful act against her will, she now hides from the Mage High Council who seek answers, and possibly her life.

Greyson Masters is the Council’s best enforcer–a witch hunter who lays down the law. Despite the danger of his job, Greyson is also raising his triplet daughters. Alone. Budding new witches who display an alarming combined power no one understands. Too bad he hasn’t got a clue how to deal with them.

Little does Greyson realize that the new nanny sent to him by Legendary Consultants is the very witch he is hunting. When the truth is revealed, can these two opposing forces find a way to listen to their hearts? Or will Greyson have to follow orders and kill Rowan–the one woman who has made his soul come alive?

 Praise for Bait N’ Witch:
✭✭✭✭✭ I swear, there were times when sparkly dust should be coming down, then again, there were times darkness and fear rode roughshod…Park your broom, brew some tea and settle in for some wonderful reading! –Tome Tender

✭✭✭✭✭ This book is another one in a series and somehow each book gets better! I loved this story. It was an unexpected way to move the story and give more information on some more characters. Rowan’s character is so likable and Greyson and his girls are charming. I can’t wait to see what this author’s next move for this series will be. Please don’t stop!! –Fanatical Paranormal Romantical

She raised her shaking hand to the door and glared at the offending appendage, annoyed at her inability to control the tremor. A shrill scream pierced the air, and Rowan froze mid-knock.

“What on earth?” Instinct had her reaching for the door knob.

Locked.

A quick incantation sprang to her lips, but, before she could utter it, the door unlocked and swung smoothly open on its own. Rowan didn’t question, instead rushed inside. Following the sound of a struggle, including several more screams, she hurried down a long hallway off the foyer to what appeared to be the family room.

The scene she came upon had her hesitating in the doorway. Three identical girls, around the age of twelve or thirteen, flung spells at each other in rapid succession and with angry intent behind every blow. In their midst stood a tall man, his face pinched with frustration as he tried to put a stop to things.

As far as Rowan could tell, the girls were using their magic to disfigure each other. Even as she watched from the shadow of the doorway, one wailed as her hair sprouted, lengthening until it touched the ground in a waterfall of follicles.

“Hey,” the girl squealed.

“Now Chloe—” the man tried in a placating voice.

But Chloe wasn’t listening. “I’ll show you,” she shouted. With a whisper of words and a fling of her hands, one of the other girls suddenly turned bald.

Another piercing scream of fury rent the air.

“Lachlyn, don’t you dare—”

Again, the man’s words went unheeded and next thing, Chloe’s long hair turned mint green.

The third girl laughed, and both her sisters turned on her together, faces red with anger.

“Enough!” Rowan snapped the word, voice full of authority, as she stepped into the room. With a wave of her hand, all three girls sat on the pale leather couch, mouths shut and hands in their laps, held mute and immobile by Rowan’s spell. She would not release them until they understood the consequences of their actions.

Progress or Not

No. Not a commentary on the election. Rather I'm updating my writing progress.

It’s amazing what a person can get done when they have deadlines. No surprise there. I admit it. I’m a procrastinator. Waiting until the last minute to write a blog is my usual. That’s why I write my Monday Morning Musing post on—you guessed it—Monday morning.

Yesterday was my turn at Paranormal Romantics. Plus it was Weekend Writing Warrior (WeWriWa) time. Consequently I had to have two posts prepared. For Paranormal Romantics, the group had discussed writing about traditions. (Love when I’m given a topic.) Since family traditions differ by culture, I wondered about traditions in alien cultures. And why that would be important. For WeWriWa, a weekly post, I’m leaving excerpts (8-10 sentences) from my first PI mystery, The Case of the Bygone Brother. Love the comments. If you missed either of those posts, click on the links above.

Writing progress. I am making progress, very slow progress, on The Case of the Meddling Mama, 3rd Alex O’Hara mystery. I’m more than halfway through. Yay. I had to take out time to write a short story for The Roses of Prose holiday online anthology. As many of you know, each December the contributors to RoP write short holiday stories that are serialized over two or three days on the blogsite. The twist to this is that each story will begin with the same sentence. This year’s is: This was the absolute last time she kissed anyone under the mistletoe. Since my story last year ended with a kiss under the mistletoe, I happily continued the story from there. Is that serendipity or what? Same characters from Alex O’Hara’s Lake Michigan resort town. Contrary to my usual way of getting things done, I finished the short story more than a month ahead of time. My story will run from December 26-28.

I need to devote this week to Meddling Mama. My deadline to finish is/was November 30th. Will I finish in time? Maybe I should have joined NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) that when writers from all over the world determine they will write a 50k word novel in 30 days. That’s a little too intense for me. More power to those who participate. Next Monday, I’ll let you know about my progress.

Enough musing. Time to get to work on that mystery and think about Thanksgiving. Our niece is having dinner at her house this year. How delightful that the baton has passed to the next generation. I’ll only have to decide what dish I’m bringing.

My Turn at #ParanormalRomantics

Last week, I redirected you to a blog I was visiting. This week, it's my turn to post on Paranormal Romantics blog. I hope you'll pop over there and see what I have to say about Science Fiction Romance. SFR captured my heart long ago. And it still has me in its clutches.

Did you stop by last Friday? I started a new theme Who's For Dinner. My visitors will tell you who they'd invite for dinner--real or fictional, living or dead. I started with Joss Whedon. Stop by this Friday to see who Patricia Kiyono would love to have dinner with.

Until next time, have a great week. Some flowers in my garden.

Second Time Around Movies

Remember when you watched a movie more than once because it was so good? I still do. Every time Indiana Jones or Goonies or The African Queen come on television, I’ll watch them. Never mind I have all on DVDs and could watch anytime.

But sometimes I have to watch a movie because either I missed things the first time around or got hopelessly lost. People on the ‘net will talk about a movie I’d just seen and mentioned things I missed. One reason is that I have tunnel vision. Seriously. Not in everyday seeing—like when I’m driving, but while watching a movie. I concentrate so much on the main character that I miss all the stuff on the periphery. Another reason for not getting everything is the sound in theaters. Sometimes the music and sound effects drown out the dialogue. Thank goodness for closed captioning on the DVD or television. Am I showing my age or what?

A movie I had to watch three times before I really got it was Inception. Holy smoke! How many dream levels were there? And what was with that ending? Reality or a dream? Talk about complicated. Now Interstellar was pretty straight-forward. Search for an alternate planet because Earth’s food supplies were running out. But then someone in a Facebook group mentioned the tesseract scene. Say what? Where was that? I thought I knew what a tesseract was from A Wrinkle in Time. So I had to watch the movie again to find it. Oh, yeah. They even mentioned the word tesseract in the movie. Totally missed it first time around.

This weekend, I watched Jupiter Ascending. First, it wasn’t what I thought it would be. I knew it was sci-fi, but somehow I missed reading about the premise. I had to watch it a second time to figure out what was what and who was who. It would have helped if I hadn’t been reading email the first time around. I have to say the graphics were great, the space scenes terrific, and I enjoyed watching the relationship between Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis. I caught a few send ups to The Matrix trilogy (same producers) and Star Wars. I’m sure there were others that I missed even the second time around. I’m glad I didn’t see it at the theater, though. Either the mix was poor on the DVD or they cranked up the music and effects in the space scenes while the dialogue was so quiet. Eddie Redmayne’s character practically whispered. Very annoying.

I’m not saying I don’t like complicated plots. I like movies (and television shows) that make me think, that have several layers. Shows that can be enjoyed on different levels. But mainly I watch to be entertained. On Saturday, my monthly post on Paranormal Romantics was about Science Fiction Friday and the new shows on the Syfy channel. I think I OD’d on sci-fi this weekend. As if movies and TV weren’t enough, we had our grandson overnight and had to watch three episodes of Star Wars Rebels and read stories from the show to him. Good thing I like sci-fi.

What do you think of movies? Do you rewatch or is once enough?
