Birthday Celebration with J.Q. Rose #99centSale #review

Join me in celebrating the 1st birthday of my friend J.Q. Rose's memoir. Arranging A Dream. Hard to believe it's been a year since I read the book. At the time, I was very interested in Janet's life before she became a published author. Here's my review from Amazon:

Such an enjoyable read.

The story read so easily. It was like Janet and I were sitting at the kitchen table over cups of tea as she told the story of leaving everything behind for a dream. Her story-telling skills came through as I read spellbound by Janet and Ted's adventure. Their move to the small town in northern Michigan could have been a disaster. How fortunate that they were warmly greeted by fellow business people, neighbors, and church members. But it wasn't all rosy. They had difficulties that threatened their dream. The reader gets a good glimpse into motherhood, too, as Janet balanced working in the floral shop and being a "good" mother. She's honest about her feelings of accomplishments and guilt. If you enjoy reading an entertaining story of pursuing one's dream, you can't go wrong with Arranging A Dream.

BACK OF THE BOOK Arranging a Dream: A Memoir

In 1975, budding entrepreneurs Ted and Janet purchase a floral shop and greenhouses where they plan to grow their dream. Leaving friends and family behind in Illinois and losing the security of two paychecks, they transplant themselves, their one-year-old daughter, and all their belongings to Fremont, Michigan, where they know no one.

Will the retiring business owners nurture Ted and Janet as they struggle to develop a blooming business, or will they desert the inexperienced young couple to wither and die in their new environment?

Most of all, can Ted and Janet grow together as they cultivate a loving marriage, juggle parenting with work, and root a thriving business?

Follow this couple’s inspiring story, filled with the joy and triumphs and the obstacles and failures experienced as they travel along the turbulent path of turning dreams into reality.

Guest: Veronica Scott #NewRelease COLONY ON FIRE #review

I'm excited to welcome back Veronica Scott who has a new release. I'm such a fan girl of Veronica's, her books are always a 1-click for me. At the end of the post, I've posted my review.

Thanks for having me as your guest! I’m a huge fan of your blog and your books so it’s great to be here.

My latest book COLONY ON FIRE, is a bit different for me because I’m writing a series where I’m following the same couple in each book. Saffia the human doctor and Micah the Calinurra Chief Ranger first appeared in COLONY UNDER SIEGE and I found I really enjoyed the world I’d created and wanted to ‘stay there’ and tell more stories about it and watch the two of them grow in their relationship.

As I mentioned last year when explaining the first book, Haven Two is loosely inspired by an island where I have relatives, which we used to visit in the summer when I was a kid. (All people and places in the books are fictional, however.)  The real island triples in population during the summer season, as wealthy off-islanders arrive and the divide between the two sets of people is quite clear. Since we had family on the island, we were almost-but-not-quite accepted and I’m sure I heard a lot of conversations about the whole topic when I was a kid. So perhaps more than most books I write, I personally feel at ‘home’ there and can visualize the setting quite clearly.

This book is standalone, however, and picks up in Saffia’s second year on the job. She owes the Sectors five years total as a colony doctor in order to get forgiveness on her medical school loans. Having fallen in love with Micah in the first year, she’s quite content – now – to stay.

Here’s the blurb:

When she came to Haven Two Dr. Saffia Mandell expected to grimly do her five years of medical service as the colony’s only doctor, work off her medical school debt and leave.  Then she’d fallen in love, handled an epidemic and become an accepted member of the community. Now, in her second year, she faces new challenges as the tinder dry planet heads into a fire season and a mysterious food allergy threatens the local restaurant’s reputation.

Chief Ranger Micah Navonn of the Calinurra never expected to fall in love with a human woman but Saffia was a special person who captured his heart and now means everything to him. Not all of his people are as enthusiastic about the situation and his efforts to handle the politics are getting complicated. Add to that an infestation by insects from another world, causing portions of the forest to die off and his plate is full.

When the jet stream shifts course and the fires rage, will the colonists and the Calinurra set aside their differences? With Saffia’s life hanging in the balance, can Micah arrive in time to save her and the colonists in jeopardy?

Life on Haven Two never lets up…

Here’s an excerpt from her first trip to a remote village, in her refurbished mobile medical clinic. This part of the trip is based a tiny bit on the Fourth of July parades on the island I mentioned above, in that the real life parade would march down the main street, turn around and march back! One of my treasured memories is participating in that parade as a kid. The excerpt:

“This is a genuinely small town, doc. You coming up here is a huge thing to them, mark my words. I’m sure it’s the biggest news Northern Station’s had in a long time. The good thing is, there aren’t that many residents so even if there’s a crowd, it’ll be tiny.” Micah snapped his fingers as a new thought clearly occurred to him. “We should make a bet.”

“On what?” she asked, genuinely curious.

“Whether there’s a parade.”

Saffia burst out laughing at the ludicrous suggestion. “Oh come on, don’t be ridiculous. Of course they wouldn’t do anything so silly.”

Utterly serious, Micah shrugged. “I don’t know. Bet me.”

Willing to play along and take the minimal risk, she asked, “What are the stakes of this awesome bet?”

His answer was prompt. “I win, you take an extra day off and go on a day hike with me. We haven’t made nearly enough time for exploring the wilderness lately. I have a special fishing spot and a waterfall I want to show you.”

Saffia decided to negotiate for something important to her. “All right. And if I win and there’s no parade, I want a kitten.”

A few minutes later they flew over the town and she studied the vids with interest. “This place is tiny. I mean, I knew it was nowhere near as big as the main village on the coast but wow—I might have overestimated how much time to allocate for this trip.” There’d been a short main street strip lined by shops, with a few houses scattered around, a school and a small office building and that was the extent of Northern Station.

“Most of the people live in the woods on large lots,” Micah said calmly as Saffia circled the bare landing pad on the south side of town. “Each household its own little forest kingdom. You’ll see. The mine is a few miles further north.”

Proud of her new skills as a pilot, Saffia set Gretchen smoothly on the edge of the paved space and heaved a deep sigh as she cut the power.

“I could have flown part of the time,” Micah said, studying her. He rose, stepped behind her chair and massaged her shoulders. “Your muscles are tight enough to snap.”

She rolled her head side to side, enjoying the pressure of his strong fingers, working the tension out. “I’ll be all right. It was important for me to prove to myself I could fly Gretchen up here solo since you can’t exactly drop everything to accompany me each time.”

There was a knock on the cockpit door and Roann the nurse along for the trip stuck her head in. “Hey, you guys, sorry to interrupt and all but there’s kind of a brass band waiting outside.”

“What?” Saffia straightened in shock and Micah stepped out of the way as she surged to her feet. Activating the outer vids she saw her nurse wasn’t kidding. A group was waiting on the edge of the landing pad and there did indeed seem to be a small band.

“Told you.” Micah was gracious enough in victory not to laugh as he stood aside for her to pass on the way out into the main cabin. “Face it, you’re a big deal, doc.”

Normally she wasn’t vain about her appearance but Saffia wished she could take a moment to at least fix her hair a bit but she’d already kept the good people of Northern Station waiting long enough. Mortified, she triggered the portal and Gretchen’s ramp slid out as the panel moved efficiently aside. There was a cheer as she stepped onto the ground and the band struck up a slightly wavering rendition of a fanfare. With annoyance she was aware of Micah stifling his amusement behind her, whether he was taking delight in being right about the scale of her welcome or the dubious musicality of the band she had no idea.

Roann came behind him. “Whoa, the town is sure pulling out all the stops for us, doctor.”

There was now a banner waving with “WELCOME DR. MANDELL and STAFF” emblazoned on it.

So is there a parade? No spoilers from me!

My Review:   5 Stars

Another treat from Veronica Scott. I was thrilled when I learned of this sequel to Interstellar Plague. I love this couple. Saffia & Micah are perfect for each other. Each is strong and independent yet are stronger together. Excellent world building, as always. The dangers they face are so real it kept me on the edge of my seat. Despite this being on a frontier planet, the instructions when facing a fire are just as relevant to us today. This story was just what I needed for escape.

Guest: J.Q. ROSE #NewRelease ARRANGING A DREAM: A Memoir #Review

I'm happy to share a new release by a fellow Michigander, J.Q. Rose. I don't often read non-fiction. I'm so glad I read this story. See my review at the end. First, I'll let Janet tell you about her story.

From one West Michigan author to another, thanks so much for hosting me on your blog, Diane.

Readers, please leave a comment below to enter the drawing for a PDF copy of Arranging a Dream: A Memoir. The deadline for entry is Thursday, February 18, at 9 pm ET. You might be the lucky commenter!!

Diane asked what inspired me to write Arranging a Dream: A Memoir. BTW, that was not the first title of the book. The working title was JQ Rose Memoir. Catchy, huh? So, after much thought, I came up with Pink Petals and Baby Poop. In my mind, it was a real keeper. My writers' group laughed at that one. When I told them I was serious, their laughter turned to concern. I dropped the Pink Petals, etc., but I still like it because it summarizes what the book is about. The florist business and motherhood.

Back to your question about why I wrote this memoir. I have several important reasons.

 1.    I have presented workshops on writing life stories for years. I encourage people to record their stories for their family and friends all the time. I thought it was about time for me to do what I say.

2.     I wanted to pen this slice of my life for our daughters and grandchildren.

3.     I look at our story as a guide for readers now and in the future. As I wrote, I realized it was a story about having a dream and turning it into reality. People bury their dreams due to the many obstacles they must overcome to achieve them. I don’t want anyone to look back at their life and have regrets for not trying to have a career in something they are passionate about. Reading through the pages of Arranging a Dream, they can be assured we overcame problems to have an extraordinary, ordinary life, and they can too.

 BACK OF THE BOOK:

Nancy Gideon Speaks

Thanks for jumping aboard my RISE BY MOONLIGHT Blog Tour, Diane!
As you and I both know, one of the best things about helming your own writing ship is being able to steer into any genre port you wish. Paranormal, contemporary, suspense . . . wherever the muse leads us. We’ve both navigated through gales and smooth sailing over the years but the ability to chart our own course makes those occasional choppy waters worthwhile. Meeting exciting new characters, learning about unexpected worlds with their own special customs and beliefs has kept the sense of wonder and excitement at the forefront of our paths.

I never expected a course I chose ten years ago to begin an adventure that would sustain my imagination through fifteen books in my “By Moonlight” world! But it did and it has in many wonderful ways. I’ve been able to mix and mingle with a cast of intriguing and somewhat dangerous characters. I’ve been at their sides for heartbreaking and sexy times.  I discovered loyalty and passion and manic revenge that got me up at 4:30 a.m. to capture those emotions while fresh in heart and mind. I’ve met a wonderful host of readers and writers and bloggers who’ve assisted in my travels, giving encouragement and lodging, even if just for the day.  I’ve been able to dig deeper than I thought possible, stretch farther than some thought wise, have had regrets and triumphs, and wouldn’t have missed a moment of it.

But all journey’s end, as Max and Charlotte’s must. But it’s been a helluva ride thanks to friends and supporters like you.

Now, on to that next adventure . . . after lingering just a bit longer in the embrace of my paranormal NOLA family.

Diane's REVIEW
5 Stars

When I read that Rise by Moonlight was available, I was so invested in the previous books I had to one-click it. OMG, this book kept me on the edge of my seat (or bed, since that's where I read) as I explored the end of a 15-book journey. Caveat: you don't have to read the previous books to enjoy this one, but your experience will be greatly enhanced if you have.

Even in all those previous books, the reader doesn't know everything about Max and Charlotte. Each revealed secret made me gasp. Little did I know as I read on that I would be gasping a lot. Their friends (and fellow shifters) the Terriots play a large part in this story. Their trials require Max and Charlotte's assistance, the same way Max and Charlotte need the Terriots'. With a cast of not-quite thousands, you might think you would get mixed up, esp. if you haven't read the other books. Not so. Ms. Gideon gives the reader just enough info about each character. The world building is fantastic--the shifter clans plus the flavor of New Orleans. If you like paranormal romance, you have to read Rise by Moonlight.

New Release for Ellen Jacobson SMITTEN WITH RAVIOLI review @Ellen_Jacobson

A really fun book released today. It's by my friend and co-IWSG'r (Insecure Writers Support Group), Ellen Jacobson. I've read all of her Mollie McGhie stories, starting with Murder at the Marina. They are laugh out loud funny.

When Ellen announced she was branching out into a new romantic comedy series, I knew I had to read them. The first is Smitten With Ravioli (Smitten with Travel series). I was lucky enough to get an advanced readers' copy so I can tell you about it.

Blurb (from Amazon)

I’m not sure what I’m more scared of—cats that drool or falling for that annoying history professor in my Italian cooking course.

Sure, Preston Whitaker has amazing blue eyes, but he’s an arrogant know-it-all, just like my ex. I can’t stand the man. And now I’m stuck with him for the next four weeks in Italy.
If you gave me a choice between snuggling with a drooling cat or with Preston, I’d choose the cat in a heartbeat.
Or would I?
Did I mention how cute Preston is?
Maybe I should have a holiday romance with him. That would be okay, right? It could be a fun diversion. Then, once I leave Italy, I’ll never have to see that pretentious jerk again.
Just one teeny-tiny problem—I think I might be falling for him big time. Will I be able to say goodbye to him when the cooking course is over?
Smitten with Ravioli is a standalone romantic comedy with a happily ever after ending that you’ll swoon over. If you like steamy-clean romance with plenty of goofy humor, Italian food, and the occasional drooling cat, you’ll love Ginny & Preston's story!

Diane's Review: 5 Stars

Smitten With Ravioli is as funny as I expected and more so. Ginny hasn't been dumped by a former boyfriend. Worse. The jerk copied her thesis paper and turned it in as his own. Consequently, she's accused of plagiarizing him. After that, she has to get away. How about Italy? Why not. She enrolls in a culinary school.

The laughs start when she discovers she enrolled in the wrong class. Then, the cute guy she met on the train (and who seems to follow her) shows up and becomes her cooking partner. Smitten With Ravioli is filled with wacky characters and crazy situations. This book will have you laughing out loud.

Smitten With Ravioli is available at  all retailers. The universal link is   https://books2read.com/ravioli

#NewRelease Jadrian: A Badari Warriors SciFi Romance by Veronica Scott & Review

I'm so happy to welcome Veronica Scott back to my blog, especially when she has a new release. I'm fascinated by this new series featuring genetically-engineered warriors. I read the first two and couldn't wait until Jadrian came out. Veronica's books are an automatic one-click for me. At the end of Veronica's post, see my review of Jadrian.

JADRIAN: A BADARI WARRIORS SCIFI ROMANCE (SECTORS NEW ALLIES SERIES BOOK 3)
By Veronica Scott

Thanks for having me as your guest today!

I’d never written an actual, sequential series with an overarching plot arc before but late last year I decided to give it a try. I’ve written any number of scifi romance novels that are loosely connected by virtue of occurring within my Sectors civilization of the future, but this is the first time I’ve deliberately set out to tell the bigger story as well as individual romances in each book.

I’m enjoying the process and I hope the readers are having fun along with me.

I’m not ordinarily a person who does outlines or any detailed planning, which works fine for standalone books. I usually know who the hero and heroine are, the opening scene, the final scene and one or two major scenes along the way. The rest comes to me as I write the book. But if I was going to write a series, I had to make sure each novel advanced the big arc as well, so I had to do a certain amount of advanced planning. Not so much that my Muse would rebel and quit! (I’m very superstitious about my Muse.)

I originally was a bit timid about the planning, mostly in case my readers didn’t like the series as much as I hoped, and I thought it might go three books. Ha! Once I got into telling stories about my genetically engineered warriors, the alien scientists who created them, the kidnapped human colonists and especially the human women who have the potential to become mates for the Badari, I didn’t want to stop. Luckily I’m getting great feedback and people seem to be enjoying the books and the Badari. So now JADRIAN is book #3, I’m working on three more books (!) and none of them are the final volume. And of course I have more ideas for novels. I do have the end game in mind and know roughly how the last novel will go. Of course nothing but Happy Ever After, because this is romance!

Even when I do write the last book in the basic series, I can always write more books with my Badari warriors.

The blurb:  Taura Dancer has been pushed to her limits by alien torturers known as the Khagrish and is ready to die when suddenly the lab where she’s held as a prisoner is taken down by an armed force of soldiers.

The man who rescues her from a burning cell block is Jadrian of the Badari, a genetically engineered alien warrior with as many reasons to hate the Khagrish as Taura has. This set of shared past experiences and the circumstances of her rescue create an unusual bond between them.
Safe in the hidden base where Jadrian and his pack take her, Taura struggles to regain her lost memories and overcome constant flashbacks during which she lashes out at all who come near. Only Jadrian can recall her from the abyss of her visions and hallucinations.

As the war against the Khagrish continues, it becomes increasingly critical to find out who she really is and how she can help in the fight. Until she can control her terrors and trust her own impulses, Taura’s too afraid to pursue the promise of happiness a life with Jadrian as her mate might offer.
When he’s captured by the dreaded enemy, will she step forward to help save him, or will she remain a prisoner of her past?

This is the third book in a new scifi romance series and each novel has a satisfying Happy for Now ending for the hero and heroine, not a cliffhanger. Some overarching issues do remain unresolved in each book since this is an ongoing series but romance always wins the day in my novels!

The excerpt, in which Jadrian gives Taura an explanation of the place she’s found herself:

“The enemy doesn’t seem to suspect we might be hiding out here (in the sanctuary valley). The Khagrish aren’t on the planet to colonize, only to conduct their perverted version of ‘science’  on a location where their home world won’t be polluted. So they’ve no reason to explore, fortunately. We patrol the surrounding terrain as thoroughly as we can on foot with our small forces.”

“I can see I’ll have a ton of questions once I feel better.” She sank into her chair gratefully. Her legs trembled, and her vertigo was beginning to worsen. The implications of various things he’d said whirled through her mind, as if she was trying to catalog the information according to some taxonomy from her previous, unremembered life. Anxiety mounted inside her as her pulse raced in time with her thoughts. “We’d better keep it simple for now, soldier. Are all of the people here escapees from the Khagrish labs?”

“Yes, a hundred or more humans, and the members of the two Badari packs. We find more people to rescue all the time.” He smiled at her.

“And I’m grateful, believe me. Has anything been heard from the Sectors?”
He shook his head. “We don’t know where we are in relation to your Sectors, and we have no spaceship. For now the resistance amounts to us, here on our own. Have you gotten any memories back? Are you from the Amarcae colony, like Dr. Garrison was?”

She kept her gaze on the lake in the distance, wishing he wouldn’t ask questions. Not knowing the answers unsettled her and fear of learning things she wouldn’t like worried her even more. Tapping her forehead with her index finger, she said, “A clean slate. I remember the basics of life, reading, writing, how to use a fork, but nothing about myself or my past. Just a big blank wall.”

“And the situation scares you?”

His gentle question was more perceptive than she’d expected from this big buff warrior, and Taura looked at him more closely.

Jadrian put his hand over hers on the arm of the chair. “Whatever’s there, locked in your mind, has no power to hurt you,” he said. “I expect you’ll remember eventually; especially if you let it happen naturally, don’t push yourself. In the meantime, start a new life here with us.”

Reclining in the chair and tilting her head to catch more of the sun’s gentle rays, she said, “You make it sound so simple.” A dark cloud of depression hovered at the edge of her consciousness and Taura did her best to shove the mood away. Concentrate on the beautiful setting and the warmth of your companion, girl.

“I’m not trying to minimize your situation—I apologize if I sounded callous.” He shrugged. “I’m in favor of continually moving forward, not thinking too much about the past. You survived what was done to you. If you’re from the colony, someone will recognize you.”

“No one has yet, according to Dr. Garrison. She thinks I might have been a passenger on a hijacked ship brought to this world.”

“We do have a few people who fall into that category. We don’t know how many humans the Khagrish have enslaved, actually. At first we believed there were about two hundred, from the colony only, but in recent raids we’ve found indications there might be more.”

“And more of you?”

He shook his head. “As far as we know, the Khagrish only created Badari warriors in the one lab.  Which is a blessing from the Great Mother— no others were forced to endure the living hell and tortures imposed on us. The Chimmer commissioned the experiment in the first place and were prone to demanding terrible tests and capricious changes. The Khagrish were always only too happy to implement new protocols, the more grueling for us, the better in their eyes.”

Veronica Scott grew up in a house with a library as its heart. Dad loved science fiction, Mom loved ancient history and Veronica thought there needed to be more romance in everything. When she ran out of books to read, she started writing her own stories.

Seven time winner of the SFR Galaxy Award, as well as a National Excellence in Romance Fiction Award, Veronica is also the proud recipient of a NASA Exceptional Service Medal relating to her former day job, not her romances!
She read the part of Star Trek Crew Member in the audiobook production of Harlan Ellison’s “The City On the Edge of Forever.”

Aydarr, first in the Sectors New Allies series, is on sale for 99 cents.

Diane's Review of Jadrian: A Badari Warrior

You've read the blurb, so you have a good idea of what the story is about. What you don't get from the blurb is the emotion you feel as you follow Taura on her journey. Although the story is named after the hero, it's more about Taura, a human who was captured and tortured then rescued from her prison. The terror she must have felt as the Khagrish did unspeakable things to her wrenched my heart. But that's not the worst. She can't remember who she is or anything about her past. Can you imagine the fear?

Her rescuer, Jadrian, is the only person she trusts. Though she's taken to a medical facility, it reminds too much of the lab where she was tortured. Will these people do the same? Flashbacks have her lashing out at anyone around her until, for their own safety, she's restrained. That is too much like what the Khagrish did to her. More terror. Only Jadrian can help.

In all of Veronica's books, her characters are well-drawn. Their strengths and their vulnerabilities make those characters believable and sympathetic. Taura may seem like a vulnerable character, but she has strengths she can't remember yet are revealed as she deals with her amnesia and the aftermath of torture. Jadrian is first and foremost a warrior. Fierce, strong. Yet, we get glimpses of his past that enable him to empathize with Taura. The reader sees his own vulnerability. As Veronica says above, the end is no surprise--definitely a Happy For Now. How Veronica gets Taura and Jadrian to that point tore my heart as I  feared for their happiness. This is one powerful story.
