Clinkz on his journey to immortality and suffering

The very embodiment of the phrase "No good deed goes unpunished", Clinkz the Bone Fletcher is the damned protector of the Hoven lands, sentenced to everlasting agony by a reward of infinite vitality that he earned by merely fulfilling his righteous duty.

Biography

[edit]
Clinkz, the Bone Fletcher
At the base of the Bleeding Hills stretches a thousand-league wood, a place called the Hoven, where black pools gather the tarry blood of the uplands, and the king-mage Sutherex sits in benevolent rule. Once a sworn protector of the Hoven lands, Clinkz earned a reputation for his skill with a bow. In the three-hundredth year of the king-mage, the demon Maraxiform rose from Sixth Hell to lay claim to the forest. In response, the king-mage decreed an unbreakable spell: to any who slew the demon would be granted Life Without End. Unaware of the spell, Clinkz waded into battle, defending his lands against the demon's fiery onslaught. Clinkz drove Maraxiform back to the gates of Sixth Hell itself, where on that fiery threshold the two locked in a mortal conflict. Grievously wounded, the demon let out a blast of Hellfire as Clinkz loosed his final arrow. The arrow struck the demon true as Hellfire poured out across the land, lighting the black pools and burning Clinkz alive at the instant of the demon's death. Thus, the mage's spell took effect at the very moment of the archer's conflagration, preserving him in this unholy state, leaving him a being of bones and rage, caught in the very act of dying, carrying Hell's breath with him on his journey into eternity.

Personality and Mannerisms

[edit]

Feelings towards his torment

[edit]

Clinkz's feelings towards his affliction are complicated, being a mix of optimistic, indifferent and negative outlooks. Firstly, it's implied that he's optimistic when he views his bare skeletal form as his more useful plus superior form over his frail body of flesh as a consequence of his failed incineration,[1] looking down on all flesh ever since Maraxiform's fire burnt it away and opened his eyes to its uselessness.[2][3][4] Not only is he proud of being a skeleton but he also trusts other bony skeletal beings like himself even more.[5] Despite this, it is implied that Clinkz still cares about his flesh when he feels concerned about it being restored to him by a Regeneration Rune.[6]

Despite his eternal torture, Clinkz's indomitable spirit makes him indifferent towards the hellfire scorching his essence, as best expressed by him saying “Better to run than the curse the road” which signifies to undertake a challenge despite it being unpleasant, instead of complaining about it. In his own case, this challenge would be the state of his life from then on after just a mere coincidence between his supposed demise and an unbreakable spell of immortality ruined it.[7]

However, Clinkz is painfully aware of the shame that comes with eternal torture, making him feel resentful towards his tormentor the demon Maraxiform.[8] Some part of Clinkz longs to die so he may rest from his perpetual suffering[9] but Clinkz may find death unsatisfactory and end up disappointed by something he endured an existence of pain for.[10]

Dutiful

[edit]

Clinkz is the sworn protector of the Hoven lands and a highly loyal servant to its long-standing ruler, the king-mage Sutherex. It's towards both his homeland and its king that he dedicates his service to with a sense of duty so strong,[11] that he doesn't allow even his own eternal torment to incapacitate himself from service, continuing to patrol and defend the Hoven in spite of the persistent agony he feels in every waking moment in his sleepless, eternal life.[12]

His sense of duty is apparent to the player in his responses, as shown in his eagerness towards the player's commands.[13] Behind all this zeal to serve, Clinkz's motivation to serve the Hoven seems to be pure, as he alone rose to kill Maraxiform while unaware of his king's reward for doing so.[14]

Rage

[edit]

Clinkz is known for having a “violent and capricious temper” as a being of pure rage.[15][16] Clinkz may be inclined to seek revenge on those who manage to put him down.[17] Familiar with the nature of war, Clinkz is a fearsome opponent to his adversaries since he considers intimidation through death as a way to dominate the enemies of the Hoven.[18][19][20]

Miscellaneous habits

[edit]

Arrogance

[edit]

Not even Maraxiform's hellfire could snuff out Clinkz's ego like it once did to his body, since he remains an archer who is proud of his skill with his bow, but not to the point of being obnoxious or narcissistic. Clinkz is not only confident in his marksmanship[21][22] but also believes that he is a peerless archer, putting down anyone who challenges his prowess.[23][24] He is also known to praise or admire his own aim and shots[25][26] as well as for having some sense of entitlement.[27]

The crazed laughter he sometimes lets out when he kills (or even thwarts) an enemy Hero expresses his self's sadistic aspects.[28][29] Like most Heroes, the rush of power is intoxicating to him, causing him to let out an elated but maniacal laugh.[30]

Relationships

[edit]

The Hoven

[edit]

Clinkz's relationship with his land the Hoven and its people.

King Sutherex

[edit]
Interactions
[edit]

The benevolent king mage Sutherex is Clinkz's liege. Some of Clinkz's services to Sutherex include collecting lives for the latter, possibly similar to how Clinkz uses this mage's spell to steal the lives of others.[31] At times, Clinkz will call upon Sutherex's guidance during battle.[32]

Populace

[edit]
Feelings
[edit]

While Clinkz is reputed for being violent and easy to anger among the Hoven's people, he's still revered and loved by them for being a hero and beacon of hope as their guardian.[15][33]

Outside of the Hoven, Clinkz is feared by some in stories that describe him as a “fiery demon” who enjoys shooting “kind, innocent travelers” who find themselves near the Hoven.[33]

Family

[edit]

Clinkz's Grandfather

[edit]
Feelings
[edit]

Clinkz carries a bow made from the bones of his grandfather's remains. His grandfather speaks to him through it, giving Clinkz advice he doesn't appreciate.[34]

Allies

[edit]

Snapfire

[edit]
Interaction
[edit]

Out of her kindness, Snapfire may share her secret cookie recipe with Clinkz to trust him with keeping it secret until after she passes.[35]

This could be her way of giving his eternal but tormented life a good purpose. Since Beatrix has quite the vast lifespan, it is fitting that she chose Clinkz for his eternal lifespan that can outlive even her to keep it secret for as long as she lives. Since she lets Clinkz tell it to others once she's passed, this ensures that her own cookies can live on without her. Plus, sharing these beloved cookies is a benevolent purpose given to the heroic bowman's painful existence.

Enemies

[edit]

Maraxiform

[edit]
Feelings
[edit]

Resenting his endless torment, Clinkz feels vindictive against Maraxiform for condemning him to it. He spites Maraxiform for this by taking its head from its remains as a bow that always faces anything he points it at, so that Maraxiform may watch his indignified life alongside him.[8]

Interactions
[edit]

Although Clinkz has killed Maraxiform in the Hoven, this demon still waits for him from the Sixth Hell it once rose from. It still tries to drag him to said hell whenever he dies or when he suffers defeat in the Ancients' war.[36]

Other Characteristics

[edit]

Equipment

[edit]

Lost Hills

[edit]

Even without flesh to protect, Clinkz still finds armor useful to his current body. As a protector of the Hoven lands, he wears steel gauntlets on his bony arms,[37] a horned helmet[38] and a pair of pauldrons to keep his heat in his body,[39] and a protective shield crafted from the Hoven's oldest trees[40] to guard his bones when he sets out with a bow meant for war.[41]

Crypt Guardian

[edit]

Clinkz also wears a set of jagged stone armor and weaponry to battle. The set includes a pair of bone-hard gloves,[42] a horned helmet to guard his skull,[43] and razor-sharp pauldrons.[44] With this armor, he carries a bow and a quiver (emblazoned with a menacing countenance that faces those behind him) that are of similar make to his armor.[45][46][47]

Demonic Vandal

[edit]

The iron-forged trappings of a fearsome figure known only as the Vandal are worn by Clinkz to battle. He hides his face with the Vandal's Demon Guise, an iron mask forged by a blind smeevil who hammered and honed it over a hundred years until it was done.[48] His bony hands are fitted with the claw of the Vandal, an iron claw forged a long time ago by smeevils and feared by its victims as the iron grip of death itself.[49] Completing this gear is an enchanted armor on his clavicle that protects the bones he wears this over during combat.[50] Against the Hoven's enemies, Clinkz wields a spiked bow against them whose pointy ends are functionally lethal in case he runs out of arrows.[51] However this may not be a problem as he hauls a big quiver from where he can pull out “endless arrows” to fire at his enemies, much to their fear.[52]

Miscellaneous

[edit]

Clinkz possesses a collection of fearsome bows with terrifying backgrounds from Hell and the realm of the dead, including one brought back from the former plane[16] and one made from the vertebrae of the “fallen damned” to channel his ire.[53] Another bow made from the dead is one made from his grandfather's bones, imbued with “spirit fire” while acting as a medium in which he can give unwanted advice to Clinkz.[34] Among his terrifying bow is one made from bone and steel, inscribed with archaic runes that corrupts anyone who can read them.[54]

Powers

[edit]

Maraxiform's Fire

[edit]

Under Sutherex's Life Without End spell, Clinkz safely—but not painlessly—wields the hellfire of Maraxiform after the demon burned him alive at the moment the immortality spell took effect on him. Like the fell fires of the myriad hells, Maraxiform's own hellfire burns without end and scorches the soul itself, while cremating foes at alarming speeds.[55][56][57]

Life Without End

[edit]

Like a poisoned chalice, Sutherex's spell—Life Without End—curses Clinkz with immortality that preserves him through being burnt forever by eternal hellfire. Sutherex—through said spell—also protects Clinkz from death, not only with an everlasting lifespan, but also by raising him from the dead should he be killed.[58][59]

Another important property of this spell is that it's “unbreakable” which means that Clinkz can't rid himself of it easily.[60] Presumably because of its ability to pull Clinkz out of death, the spell lets Clinkz escape from Maraxiform dragging his soul to Sixth Hell when he dies.[61]

Strafe

[edit]

Clinkz is renowned for his speed with the quiver, as shown in his own Strafe, in which he loads and fires multiple arrows at a quick rate. It's said that witnesses cannot tell whether the blur around Clinkz is from his flaming heart or this speed.[62]

On the topic of witnesses, the wounded Maraxiform—in its final moments—saw Clinkz tap into this speed to shoot the final arrow which ended the demon, the closest thing that he can come to peace with in his torment-addled existence.[63]

Tar Bomb

[edit]

A flammable ichor of mysterious origin drips from the gap where Clinkz's heart once pulsed, the former of which Clinkz now throws at his foes as a useful Tar Bomb during combat.[64]

The ichor in this could be the “tarry blood” mentioned in Clinkz's biography. According to this bio, the tarry blood falls down from the aptly named Bleeding Hills, before gathering in the black pools at the base of the Hills where the Hoven is. Seeing how it's ichor, it's not yet known what god owns this tarlike blood.

Death Pact

[edit]

When he fulfilled Sutherex's own conditions of being granted the unbreakable spell of Life Without End, Clinkz gained the mage king's bond of life and death and with it, a Death Pact that he uses on lesser beings to steal their life-force and replenish himself.[65]

Burning Army

[edit]

Making the most out of his agonizing existence, Clinkz learned from his existence on the brink of life and death his necromantic power to raise a Burning Army of skeleton archers who rise from the dead to fight with temporary lives.[66]

Burning Barrage

[edit]

Clinkz's speed with his quiver becomes far more threatening when he combines them with his bone arrows that he ignites in his flaming heart in a Burning Barrage that incinerates any foe he targets it towards, the last thing they see being a rain of flaming arrows before their eyes.[67]

Skeleton Walk

[edit]

Whether he is shadowing a target or escaping a foe's sight, Clinkz can enter a sneaky Skeleton Walk in which he turns invisible after a brief flash of flame and dissipating smoke, putting his enemies on high alert.[68]
