Trivia[edit]
- The first part Ringmaster's name "Cogliostro" may be a reference to Alessandro Cagliostro, who was an italian adventurer and magician, similar to Ringmaster now.
- The 'A' in Cagliostro was also changed into an 'O' to create a pun, since Ringmaster has visible cogs within his body.
- Impalement Arts's sound effects (▶️ cast sound, and ▶️▶️▶️ hit sounds) are direct samples from the song Sabre Dance.
- Several of Ringmaster's responses are pop culture references:
- Most lines are references to clowns, marionettes, and puppets of varying movies and other media.
- The line ▶️ "What's in the box? Me!" is a reference to a specific scene from the movie Se7en, known as the box scene.[1]
- The line ▶️ "Time to cut a smile on some faces!" is a reference to the Joker from the movie "The Dark Knight", who is a twisted clown figure with the famous self-inflicted "glasgow smile".
- The line ▶️ "Like a real boy. Ha." is a reference to Pinochio, who is a marionette with the dream to become a real boy.
- The lines ▶️ "Three rings of torture!" and ▶️ "A master for each ring." are a reference to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, nodding to his title as the -Ring-master.
- In the lines ▶️▶️ and ▶️▶️, Ringmaster is singing the melody of the song "Pop! Goes the Weasel", a tune very commonly used by Jack-in-the-box toys.
- In the lines ▶️▶️ and ▶️▶️, Ringmaster is singing the melody of the song "Entrance of the Gladiators", a tune that is nowadays strongly associated with circuses.
- The line ▶️ "Should've stolen a little keen car." references clown cars, which are comically small cars from which an unbelievable amount of clowns emerge, as a common trick in circuses. In Dota, the Keen are a race of small humanoids.
- The line ▶️ "I don't use carrots -- only sticks." is a play on the carrot and stick metaphor.
- The line ▶️ "Where there's a whip..." is a reference to The Return of the King (1980 film), specifically to the song "Where There's a Whip (There's a Way)". [2]
- The lines ▶️ "Round and round she goes." and ▶️ "Where it stops, no one knows." are a reference to The Original Amateur Hour, an American radio and tv show.
- ▶️ "Ashes to ashes, dirt to dirt." is a play on the phrase "Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust" from the funeral service from the Book of Common Prayer.
- ▶️ "Exit, stage left" is an idiom, refering to an uneventful departure from the stage, as to make way for more interesting events.
- The line ▶️ "Sorry. Fairies only live if the audience claps." is a reference to the 1954 PeterPan musical, specifically the scene where Tinkerbell tells Peter Pan that if every boy and girl who believes in fairies would clap their hands, she would live. Peter Pan then breaks the 4th wall and asks the audience to clap their hands to save her, which they do.
- The line ▶️ "What do you do with a drunken sailor? Personally, I like killing them." is a reference to the widely known sea shanty "Drunken Sailor".
- The line ▶️ "You remind me of a monkey I once saw sewn to a fish. It was dead too." is a reference to the Fiji mermaid, which is the torso of a monkey sewn to the back half of a fish.
- The line ▶️ "Good night, moon." may be a reference to the childrens' book Goodnight Moon.
- The line ▶️ "If you prick me, will you not bleed?" is a reference to The Merchant of Venice, a play from William Shakespear. The original quote goes "... If you prick us, do we not bleed? ..."
- The line ▶️ "Santa Sangre!" may be a reference to the film Santa Sangre. Literally, "Santa Sangre" translates to "Holy Blood".
- The line ▶️ "Deus Ex Staff-ina" is a play on deus ex machina, which is a term for a plot device in shows and movies whereby a critical situation is somehow overcome through the means of the unexpected. The line is used upon purchasing Eul's Scepter of Divinity, which can be refered to as an in-game Deus Ex Machina, as it is commonly used as an escape tool.
- The line ▶️ "Where I come from, discord is high art. is a reference to My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. The line is used upon purchasing Veil of Discord. In the show, John de Lancie – the voice actor of Ringmaster – also voices Discord, one of the main antagonists of the show. His voice performance on both characters is also remarkably similar.
- The line ▶️ "You think you're a tragedy but, really, you're a comedy." is a reference to the 2019 film Joker. The original quote goes "I used to think that my life is a tragedy, but now I realize it's a fucking comedy."
- ▶️ "It's time. Play the music. Light the lights!" is a reference to the opening theme of The Muppet Show, where the first verse of the lyrics goes "It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights".
