Lore:
When the gods have nightmares, it is Bane Elemental who brings them. Also known as Atropos, Bane was born from the midnight terrors of the goddess Nyctasha. A force of terror too powerful to be contained by sleep, he surfaced from her slumbers, fed upon her immortality, and stole his vaporous form from her inky blood. He is the essence of fear. Mortals who hear his voice hear their darkest secrets whispered in their ear. He calls to the hidden fear in every Hero's heart. Wakefulness is no protection, for Bane's black blood, continuously dripping, is a tar that traps his enemies in nightmare. In the presence of Bane, every Hero remembers to fear the dark.

[edit]- In greek mythology, Atropos was the eldest of the three Moirai sisters.
- Specifically, she was the goddess of fate and destiny, responsible for cutting the "Thread of Life, deciding the end of mortals' lifes.
- The name Atropos translates to "not turning" from greek: a- (negating prefix) and tropos ("turned"), in the sense of, referring to the irreversible and inevitable destiny of death.
- Bane's rivalry line towards Tinker ▶️ "Do Tinkers dream of electric sheepsticks?" is a reference to the book "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?". "Sheepstick" is also a commonly used name for the Scythe of Vyse.
- His movement line ▶️ "Sleep no more!" is a reference to Shakespeare's play Hamlet, in particular, his famous "To be or not to be" soliloquy. Hamlet reasons over whether to take his own life or carry on: "To die, to sleep-. No more-and by a sleep we say to end..."
- His last hit Response "▶️ "The wages of fear." is a reference to the film of the same name, The wages of fear.
- Fiend's Grip ▶️ sound effect makes use of one of Bane's voice file, ▶️ "The bane of your existence".
- Since his release, Bane's strength, agility, and intelligence have always been equal. Although coindicental at first, this is now being kept that way intentionally; Whenever his attributes get changed, all three of them get changed equally.
- Bane's concept is inspired by the game Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis.
- Bane and Virtue are two of the 6 elements within the game, with Bane being the dark element, and virtue being the light element.
- All of Bane's abilities would fall under the Bane category within the game, hence his Dot a 2 title, Bane.
- In DotA, Bane's full title is "Bane Elemental", being even more direct than his Dota 2 title.
- All of Bane's abilities are named and partially themed after existing spells in Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis:[1]
