Lore:
Slardar is a Slithereen, one of the Deep Ones, guardian of a vast network of sunken cities and the ancient riches buried within them. In the lightless gulf of the deepest ocean abysses, the Slithereen Guard patrols secret treasure rooms, ever vigilant against the subaqueous thieves sent into the deeps by covetous dryland sorcerers. He is utterly loyal, and his taciturn nature hides deep knowledge of the most secret places of the sea. He rises to the shallows in spite of the pain caused him by brightness, to commit reconnaissance, to make sure no one is conspiring against the depths, and sometimes in relentless pursuit of the rare few who manage to steal off with an item from the Sunken Treasury. Because he has spent his whole life at great pressure, under tremendous weight of the sea, Slardar the Slithereen Guard is a creature of immense power.

- With the 7.00 gameplay update, three of Slardar's abilities have been renamed:
- From "Sprint" to Guardian Sprint
- From "Bash" to Bash of the Deep
- From "Amplify Damage" to Corrosive Haze
- ▶️ "That is not dead that can eternal lie." and ▶️ "And with strange aeons even death may die." are direct quotes from H.P.Lovecraft's short story "The Nameless City".
- Another Lovecraft story, "The Shadow over Innsmouth" is also referred to several times in Slardar's backstory and voice files with mentions to "The Old Ones" and "The Deep Ones".
- Warcraft 3 similarities:
- Slardar's hero concept is originally based on the Myrmidon, a campaign-only Naga unit.
- Guardian Sprint's original iteration was identical to the Troll Berserker's Berserk, with the attack speed bonus set to 0.
- Slithereen Crush's original iteration combined the Tauren Chieftain's War Stomp with the Mountain King's Thunder Clap.
- Bash of the Deep's original iteration was identical to the Mountain King's Bash.
- Corrosive Haze's original iteration was identical to the Druid of the Talon's Faerie Fire.
- Faerie Fire has an Autocast function in Warcraft, and thus also in DotA. This functionality was never added to Dota 2.
