William "Glutonny" Belaid is a French Ultimate, and former Brawl and Wii U Wario player from Paris, France, who is largely regarded as the best Ultimate player from Europe and the best Ultimate Wario player in the world. A mainstay of the European Smash scene since debuting in 2009 at age 13, he is also regarded as the best European Wario player in history for both Brawl and Wii U. In Ultimate, he was ranked 13th in LumiRank 2024.2.

Remaining a Wario main for the entirety of his career across different Smash games due to his love for the character, his win of Bushido Brawl Impact 1 in July 2010 makes him the only European in history to have won a major Brawl tournament, and the only player to have done so using Wario. He is also ranked the 70th best Wii U player of all time on the PGR100, the only featured Wario player. By winning Albion 4 in July 2019, he became the first European to win a major Ultimate tournament; he remains the European with the most major wins for Ultimate, and the only player to have done so with solo Wario. By winning Pound 2022 in April 2022, he became both the first European to win a premier tournament for Ultimate, and the first European to win a major for Ultimate outside of Europe. With his win at UltCore Second in January 2024, he became the first European to have won Ultimate majors in all three main competitive territories (Europe, Japan and North America).

Biography[edit]

Glutonny started playing Smash with Brawl, entering small, mostly amateur tournaments alongside his older brother Karma; during one such event, Leon, the number 1 Brawl player in France who happened to attend, was impressed by his performance, and encouraged him to attend more serious Brawl events.[1]

His tag comes from the Fullmetal Alchemist character Gluttony (himself named after one of the seven deadly sins), and is intentionally misspelled to resemble "gloutonnerie", French for "Gluttony"; he picked the name because he found it fitting for the character of Wario.[2] In parrallel to his Smash career, he graduated high school and got a diploma in engineering, working as a professionl engineer for a year before focusing solely on his video game career.[3]

He joined orKs Grand Poitiers on April 25, 2018[4] and left on January 18, 2019.[5] On January 27, 2019 he joined Solary.[6]

In july 2020, he opened his own Smash academy, the Glutonny Academy, to find help train younger talents. Explaining the origins of the project in an interview, he stated that, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he had taken an interest than before to the French online scene, as offline competition was shut down, and realized that there were many "diamonds in the rough" that were unable to attend offline tournaments because of money issues, living too far from big cities, or reticent parents. The Academy aimed to have more accomplished players train those newcomers, and help them attend offline tournaments; the inaugural line-up of nine trainees included French players Mezcaul, Nitox, MoDzai, and Raflow, as well as Raarchyor, a Moroccan player residing in France, all of whom subsequently established themselves as top European talents; Raflow would notably become the first European to ever eliminate Glutonny from an Ultimate tournament in October 2021.[3]

Brawl[edit]

Accompanied by his older brother Karma, Glutonny attended his first proper tournament, Bushido Impact 8, in February 2009 at the age of 13. At the time, it was the largest event ever organized in France. Despite being the undisputed best French player in 2008, Leon was double-eliminated by Glutonny in pools and Winners Finals. Although Glutonny was defeated 3-0, 3-0 in Grand Finals by Kaos, his skill was now recognized by the French community, with Leon even labelling him a prodigy.[7]

Glutonny continued to attend tournaments and maintained strong performances. Due to his young age and a limited European Brawl scene, he was mostly seen at Bushido Impact events. He participated in his first proper international tournament in July 2010 at the major Bushido Brawl Impact. This event was the largest Brawl tournament ever organized in Europe, with players from 12 different countries participating. After losing to Ally in Winners Finals, Glutonny beat him twice in Grand Finals, winning a major at 15 years of age; he remains the only European to have won a Brawl major, and the only player to have done so with Wario.

His first North American tournament was SKTAR in July 2012. He finished 17th out of 140 participants.

Wii U[edit]

Glutonny switched to competing to Super Smash Bros. For the Wii U upon its release; despite Wario being largely perceived as a low tier character in Wii U, Glutonny continued to main the character, and came to be seen as the bes Wario player in the world. Some of his biggest tournaments won include MARS 2017 (125 entrants), Albion 2 (306 entrants), Respawn (124 entrants).[3]

In late 2018, the PGR100 ranked Glutonny as 70th greatest Wii U player of all time, the only featured Wario player and one of only three Europeans together with Mr. R at 10th and Ixis at 89th.

Ultimate[edit]

Continuing to main Wario upon the release of Ultimate, Glutonny immediately established himself as one of the best players in the world and the best player in Europe, winning the 56-player Delfino Razzia and the 218-player Ultimate Wanted #1 in December 2018, the same month Ultimate was released; despite being very active during those periods, he would remain undefeated in Europe until May 2019, and not be eliminated from any tournament by another European until October 2021.

His first Ultimate venture outside Europe was at GENESIS 6, where after suffering an early upset loss to ImHip (a player using Olimar, a character infamously dreaded by Europeans due to his absence on the European scene) he would eliminate Makibaz, Nietono, Klaatu and Marss in Losers before being eliminated by Tweek, placing 17th. He would then crucially place 3rd at Smash Ultimate Summit, for which he qualified via crowdfunding, losing to Nairo but defeating Mang0 and Light in pools to qualify for Winners bracket where he would defeat Cosmos and zackray before losing to MkLeo and getting 3-0'd by Dabuz' Olimar in Losers Finals.

After he kept on winning Europe's biggest tournaments, Glutonny would lose a European tournament for the first time at Stunfest 2019 in May 2019, where he would place 2nd after being double-eliminated by Shuton's Olimar. After placing 5th at CEO 2019, once again eliminated by Dabuz' Olimar, Glutonny would become the first European to win an Ultimate major at Albion 4 in London, the first European Ultimate major; at the tournament, he would reach Grand Finals from Winners while avoiding his dreaded Olimar matchup due to tournament favorite Dabuz suffering an upset loss to Raito, although he would eventually have to face Dabuz in Grand Finals, losing the first set 1-3 before winning the Reset 3-1, his first win against Dabuz after losing all six sets they had previously played in their Smash careers (two in Wii U and four in Ultimate).

Glutonny would be ranked 14th in the world in the PGRU Spring 2019, one of only two featured Europeans together with Mr. R at 36th, and would maintain both his absolute European dominance and strong North American major results for the rest of the year, the latter including a4th place at Smash Factor 8 and a 3rd place at EVO 2019. His only two eliminations in Europe that season would both come in Grand Finals from MkLeo, the number 1 player in the world, at the major Ultimate Fighting Arena 2019 in France and Vienna Challengers Arena in Austria. He would eventually be ranked 8th in the world in the PGRU Fall 2019, again one of only two featured Europeans with Mr.R, who was ranked 44th.

Early 2020 would see get a 7th place at GENESIS 7 and a 17th place at Frostbite 2020 where he would be eliminated by Samsora, both players having suffered very early upset losses in Winners. After the COVID-19 pandemic forced the pause of offline Ultimate competition, and then made international player travel possible but trickier, Glutonny remained in France, where he would win the 525-player Ultimate Wanted #3 and place second at the supermajor Temple:Hermès Edition, where he would lose to Tea in Grand Finals.

On October 7, 2021 at Dōjo #7, Glutonny would be eliminated by another European for the first time. He originally competed in the tournament using only his secondaries, reaching Grand Finals from Winners that way; after losing the first set of Grand Finals using Link and Marth to Raflow, he would switch to his Wario main for the Reset, although Raflow would reverse 3-0 him to become the first European to elimiate Glutonny from a tournament. He would resume travelling to North America in November 2021, notably placing 2nd at the major CEO 2021 where Kola would double-eliminate him in Grand Finals.

Glutonny would start 2022 with some of the worst results of his Ultimate career, placing 17th at two French tournaments, WANTED Season 4 - Chapter 3, which he was heavily favored to win, and WANTED Season 4 - Chapter 4, being eliminated both times by fellow French players. Conversely, his results at North American majors remained strong, with 5th places at Glitch: Infinite and Smash Ultimate Summit 4 and a 3rd place at RETA 2022.

At GENESIS 8, Glutonny defeated higher-seeded player Cosmos before being 3-0'd by tournament favorite MkLeo in Winners Quarterfinals; he would go through a Losers run all the way to Grand Finals, defeating sisqui, Kola, Zomba, Light and Sparg0 to once again be 3-0'd by MkLeo, placing 2nd. The next week, Glutonny would win Pound 2022, double-eliminating MkLeo and becoming both the first European to win an Ultimate supermajor and the first to win an Ultimate major outside Europe. This would firmly re-establish him as the best player from Europe, and he would be ranked 15th worldwide for 2022, again the highest-placed European.

In 2023, Glutonny's accomplishments included winning the French majors King Of Fields 95 #3 in June, Ultimate Fighting Arena 2023 in November; in-between the two, he won Tera, the biggest European Smash tournament in history, where after losing Winners Semifinals to Sparg0 he would defeat his then-European rival Bloom4Eva and Light, revenge-eliminate Sparg0 in Losers Finals, and double-eliminate Tweek in Grand Finals. At Smash Factor X in Mexico, he would defeat Tea, a long-time nemesis of his, for the first time and eventually place 4th, defeated yet again by Shuton's Olimar. He would be ranked 5th worldwide for that year.

In January 2024, Glutonny won the Japanese major UltCore Second, becoming the first European (and third person overall after Tea and zackray to have won Ultimate majors in all three main competitive territories (Europe, Japan and North America). He would be ranked 22nd in the world for the first half of 2024 and 13th for the second half, again the top European both times.

In March 2025, he won the supermajor Battle of BC 7, his second North American major win; the tournament had included the Top 3 players in the world, and eight of the Top 10; Glutonny had been seeded to place 13th.

He also has an extensive career in Ultimate doubles, mostly partnering up with MkLeo, with whom he has won several doubles major tournaments, and with Leon, mostly while competing in Europe.

Playstyle[edit]

Glutonny states that he appreciates Wario because of his versatility and aerial mobility, allowing him to create combos on the fly; although he acknowledges that Glutonny does not have the best offensive options in Ultimate, he believes that, with the the motorbike being a potent projectile weapon, Wario "has all the tools in order to counter every game style".[8][9]

He acknowledged that Wario was a much lesser character in Wii U than he was in Brawl, forcing Glutonny to heavily alter his playstyle and experiment to find ways to make the character viable.[3] His Smash career caused him to suffer from frequent tendinopathy (tendon issues causing pain) in his hands, which have threatened to end his career; this lead him to transition from a GameCube controller to the Switch Pro Controller in March 2024, although a drop in his results later led him to resume using a GameCube controller.[10]
