Use a (gitignored) file for interactive scripting. Instead of entering a command directly into the terminal, write it to a file first, and then run the file.

Much of good survey design is getting a decent model of the mind and incentives of your audience. Egos are predictable. You have to tease it out like taffy, and if the ego is sticking to your results too hard you have to find other questions to trap them.

We want assurances that sensitive information will not be disclosed when aggregate data derived from a database is published. Differential privacy offers a strong statistical guarantee that the effect of the presence of any individual in a database will be negligible, even when an adversary has auxiliary knowledge. Much of the prior work in this area consists of proving algorithms to be differentially private one at a time; we propose to streamline this process with a functional language whose type system automatically guarantees differential privacy, allowing the programmer to write complex privacy-safe query programs in a flexible and compositional way.

Very interesting work here!

The core idea here is that if you’re a post doc, don’t just do what you’re told.

Your language sucks, actually.

In the United States, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, is a unique legal entity with characteristics unlike any other, which thereby allow its powers to be abused unlike any other. Lawyers have long seen ICE as a threat to American democracy, and for good reason.

This blog post comes basically in two parts: the role which LLM assistants are trained for is horribly undefined and ontologically hella strange, and AI safety “””researchers””” are basically goading LLMs into misalignment without any concern for the consequences.

I would like to believe there is something purposeful, resistant, even radical in the heterofatalist mode, but the more I voice it, the more I am inclined to agree with Seresin that it can produce nothing but more of itself. “Heterosexuality is nobody’s personal problem,” he writes. “It doesn’t make sense to extricate your own straight experience from straightness as an institution.” It isn’t that my friend needs to find “some other way to live”; it’s that we all do. But instead of looking for it, we disaffected women “perform” for one another this mutually enabling kind of maintenance, periodically off-gassing some of the shame and frustration of dating men and then chugging along with the status quo.

At first I thought was going to be some pseudo-feminist drivel. but then it turned out to be quite honest and vulnerable. In a sense, it does a good job of summarizing much of what I learned about gender in 2025. Introduces the concept of “heterofatalism.”

Speaking of men: the whole “women are constantly afraid of men” idea is also bad for men. We recognize this on the axis of race. We know it’s painful for a black man to be always viewed as a potential perpetrator of a crime: to have women clutch their purses more closely as he walks by, to see women cross the street to avoid walking close to him, to have people question why he’s in a store if not to steal. Of course, in America, white and Asian men are much less strongly parsed as potential criminals than black and Hispanic men are. But it still happens, and it’s still painful to many men.

I mean, would you like reading about how half of humanity views you walking down Redwood Trail as a violent threat?

If you want to liberate women, don’t major in gender studies. Major in reproductive biology.
