Users often struggle with cloud file-sharing applications. Problems appear to arise not only from interface flaws, but also from misunderstanding the underlying semantics of operations like linking, attaching, downloading, and editing. We argue that these difficulties echo long-standing challenges in understanding concepts in programming languages like aliasing, copying, and mutation.

Campy in a good way.
Easy to download. Easy to run. Easy to modify. Easy to share.
Sometimes people define “sexual attraction” as “wanting to have sex with someone.” This can be really confusing when we talk about the asexuality spectrum. If we define “demisexual” as “only wants to have sex in a committed and emotionally intimate relationship,” it’s extraordinarily common, perhaps normal…
Interesting analogy regarding sexual attraction to determine if one is demisexual or not.

[…] people’s [dating] advice and complaints primarily reflect, not great truths about love and dating and gender relations, but their own idiosyncratic way of moving through the world. So even in the best cases, where no one is making up emotionally satisfying daydreams, dating discourse winds up consisting of people lobbing anecdotes back and forth at each other, each person accurately representing their own lives.
Very straightforward post. I think everything here is reflective of all “chosen” human relationships, especially friendships.
I find this review of dating men in the Bay Area very interesting, which is why I’m going to write a long-ass post complaining about it.
Sadly paywalled, but some interesting commentary on one of the big ideas of the post.
More discussion of what is wrong with American men. The “map” concept that grounds the post is quite good. I can’t exactly find myself in any of the archetypes presented, but the stories shared are harrowing. The reform suggested at the end rings kinda hollow, and I still have no map for being a man that isn’t “don’t be a jerk!” And, lest we forget, bioessentialism is still whack; I’d rather it not be at the core of arguments used to justify my emancipation. Being a man sucks.

Very pretty video with classic British sarcasm, albeit the thesis is quite obvious. He already admits to this in a footnote, but I think where innovation is most needed in notation is with computer music. My focus personally is on digital composition, sampling, and capturing more arbitrary articulations (i.e. parameter sweeps, toggling of effects, MPE).

Nice review of stuff from 18.C06/18.063.
I have great respect for Mickey’s commitment to improving our science, and he’s always a sharp and provocative thinker. But we can gain a much broader perspective on the question of replicability by considering the evidence from as many of the best tools at our disposal.
Smart people are sometimes the last to realize that the cognitive ship they are captaining is about to sink.
Brings up excellent questions regarding how and when we can know a theory is dead.
