When bad news gets me down, I often get insomnia. I wake up in the middle of the night, start thinking about how we’re all doomed, and can’t easily stop. To break out of these doom loops, I do elaborate visualization exercises. They don’t really put me to sleep, they just calm me down…

Lightly depressing nerd shit.

I have a slight problem wherein every time I start up a game of NetHack, I completely loose touch with my surroundings for hours on end. Thankfully The DevTeam Thinks Of Everything and there’s a solution that allows communication with the outside world without breaking immersion: the mail daemon! If compiled with -DMAIL and OPTIONS=mail is set in your runtime configuration (the default on Linux), NetHack will periodically check a user specified mbox file (MAIL) for new mail, and upon receiving an email a mail daemon will spawn in and deliver a scroll of mail to the player.

Dougherty is writing books on the ethics of consent and on the rational (in)significance of the fact that we act from a temporal perspective. Among other topics, they have also researched the debate over consequentialism, ethical vagueness and female under-representation in philosophy.

Another one of my favorite contemporary philosophers.

I am a moral philosopher who studies normative power. I write about the power we have to change the moral, legal, and social world through speech acts and other expressions of our will. Consider, for instance: consent, promises, promissory release, offers, and threats. I also work on exploitation…

One of my favorite contemporary philosophers.

Today we’re talking about diners, cafeterias, and Automats: the missing piece in modern eating. If you’ve cooked in a small old apartment kitchen, you might ask, how did everyone cook all their meals here. The answer: maybe they didn’t. Horn & Hardart Automats and diners historically are a big part of city eating. What else comes up in the video? IKEA, Celebrate the Century stamps, horses, and a splash of Gilmore Girls.

As someone who currently eats at their work’s cafeteria and school’s dining halls, I wish we had cafeterias I could go to with the homies.
