November 2025 hobby update

Image
Birthday, A&E, ECG, Doctors, chest pains clinic, ECG, dentist, blood tests.  What a fun packed month it's been!  You think you know what's coming don't you, that I didn't do much hobby wise.  On the contrary dear reader, the thought of one's possible demise has given me a good old kick up the arse to get on with stuff.   Completed  Here's what I finished off during the month: 37 Heroics & Ros 6mm Soviet Paratroops finished as Iraqi Republican Guard.  This is a full platoon with a HMG support.  I also based a BRDM-2 that had been hanging about. Still with The Iran-Iraq War project I spent some time tidying up the two forces, which was another of those jobs I've been meaning to do for ages and like many of those jobs once you start it takes no time at all to do.  First off I cut some magnetic rubber sheeting to fit in the RUB inserts that Warbases had made for me in the summer.  Then I added some magnets to the base of the end...

Trench Crusade - my two penneth

Image
As there's been so much talk about it both from outraged historical gamers, and enthusiastic fantasy gamers, I recently took some time to look at Trench Crusade. After watching some videos, browsing the official website and skimming the "lore" and rules, I have to say I don't know what the fuss is about from the historical side of the hobby.  I really don't.  It's clearly an alternative history game.  It has nothing to do with any real history and doesn't pretend to.  Even a cursory glance at any of the material would swiftly confirm that. Therefore I'm at a bit of a loss as to why it has caused such an outpouring of bile and derision.  Is it because it's been so successful?  Is there a feeling of injustice in that historical companies just don't make that sort of money after all their painstaking research?  Unfortunately that seems to be the way of the world, look at all the fantastic artists, musicians etc. that never received the rewards th...

October 2025 hobby update

Image
October started well, then I picked up a nasty fluey thing that curtailed my hobby activities for a full week.  Work has also been full on so not as much done as I'd hoped, but still a bit of progress.   Completed  Here's what I finished off during the month: I concentrated on the Heroics & Ros 6mm and got another 79 Iraqi and Iranians all based and finished.  I used the 3-2-1 scheme I explained last month ( here ).  The initial Iranian and Iraqi forces are now complete.  I'm quite pleased with that as I managed to do it within six months of buying them.  Just a few aircraft to do now and this phase of this project will be complete. I finally finished off the Italian villa that's been on the table for a while.  I spent too long thinking about how to do the courtyard and in the end used embossed plastic card, which was my original idea!  Cut to size and painted this has worked a treat.  Once this was in place I added more weather...

Verrotwood Game 7 - A return to the Place of Power

Image
Introduction  Years have passed and the ancient stones of the Place of Power are once again sending out their arcane emanations.  Unable to ignore the call, the cultists of the Wisentii and The Uncoiling of Beiysss are drawn to battle in the shade of the great monoliths.   Set up This game is a revisit to one of the earliest games of Verrotwood that I played ( here ).  Pre-game I rolled for additional terrain and generated a piece of Elevated terrain.  The three standing stones are along the centre of the table.  The creature roll generated a Greater Forest Beast (GFB), which I deployed in the centre of the table.   Round 1 Round 1  starting positions  The first round action is dominated by the cultists manoeuvring to place themselves in a position to take control of the stones.  SerpensLeachim of The Uncoiling and B reath of Wisentii are the only two to achieve this.  The rest of the cultists are either stopped in their t...

September 2025 hobby update

Image
September has been a busy month both work and family wise.  I also got away for a week at the end of the month.  Therefore, hobby time has been limited, but the main thing is that I’ve enjoyed what I’ve worked on and my summer slump is well behind me.   Completed  Here's what I finished off during September: I made a couple of diseased warriors for a scenario I’m putting together for Verrotwood, using the bodies and heads from Victrix Ancient Germans and other bits from the Frostgrave Cultists and Barbarians sets.  And while I had the plastics box out I made up a Frostgrave Cultist as a reanimated also for Verrotwood.   6 Heroics & Ros 6mm Taliban, 60 1980's Soviet Motor Rifle (Iraqi) infantry and 60 1980's German (Iranian) infantry.   After spending far too much of my limited brain power agonising over how best to base my 6mm Moderns, I hit on a scheme with enough flexibility to work for most rules.  I have a great big box full...
