December 2024 hobby update

Well here we are another year done.  All in all its been a good one for hobbying. My Ovelist updates with summaries of the year for gaming and doing can be seen here and here respectively.  Let's hope 2025 is a good year in all ways for all of us. Completed There was a few things I really wanted to get finished before the end of the year.  Miniatures wise I’ve worked in four scales this month: First of all in 15mm I completed the Cromarty Forge Village Defenders.  This was the last of my 15mm.  Readers will know how much I've enjoyed working on these.  If I had my own 3D printer I'd probably have bought all their STLs and have printed so many figures that they'd never get painted, which is one of the many reasons I won't get my own printer!   Then I rebased a 32mm Sci-Fi figure.  This was one of the figures I completed in the summer, only to discover that the base was skewed and not truly round.  This jarred with my pedantic ways so I rebased...

A Punic Punch-up - Midgard AAR

Introduction Somewhere in Iberia a Carthaginian force scouting to find the main Roman army, come into contact with a Roman force.  Hanno Barberella the Carthaginian general decides to attack.  The force rosters can be found here .  Starting positions, Carthaginians at the top. Turn One The Numidian Skirmishers are all moved one Spear Throw (ST) and all pass their Command tests to take a second move.   The first Veteran infantry unit moves once, but fails it's Command test so Nailem the Crucifier, a level 2 Hero) spends a mighty deed to move them again.  The second Veteran unit passes it's Command test and moves a second time straightaway.  Nailem moves up with them.   One unit of Libyan infantry moves twice, but the second unit is impeded by rough terrain and failing it's Command test gets caught up.  One unit of Scutarii makes it's second move ok but the second fails so Iniesta Pardinus the level 1 Hero, spends a Mighty Deed to get them...

The hobby week - 20 August to 26 August

I've had a varied week hobby wise with a bit of everything and it's been very enjoyable.  Gaming I finally got round to playing an Algerian War game, using Ambush Alley rules.  Read the AAR here .   Painting/modelling   I've completed the Great Escape Games plastic gunfighters.  These seemed to take no time at all and were really enjoyable to paint.  Have a look here . I've been working on my 10mm Punic Wars collection bases again.  I spent some time on these  last year , but have reworked them to go with my current thinking which is actually going back to my original thinking!  I'm not indecisive at all.  I've now recut the card sabot bases so all foot are based four figures in two ranks of two on 20mm square bases and cavalry are two to a 20mm square base.  This gives a lot of flexibility for a number of rulesets and makes them far more usable and easier to handle for a game being the same size as one 25mm figure base....

A project finished? - 10mm Punic Wars

I can't believe that it's Summer 2016 that I first started to look at collecting Punic Wars armies. Where does the time go? As usual I gathered some books and looked into the period. Sometimes this is as far as it goes but I was enthused and cracked on. My first foray into 10mm, I  bought about 300 figures from Newline Designs in August 2016 and it took me until the end of 2018 to finish them.  True to my tangent ways I'd moved through multiple other interests and the little chaps were put away in the filing cabinet. With the increase in spare time over the last year, my thoughts have returned to these forgotten legions. At the start of 2021 I starting organising and pointing up the armies for WAB using the Hannibal source book. Inspired by the  Minihammer  ethos the infantry were based on 10mm x 10mm single or 10mm x 20mm double bases and the cavalry on 10mm x 20mm or 20mm x20mm doubles. However, this makes them very fiddly and was one of the reasons why I had never...
