Painting Workshop by Marc Masclans in Nuremberg

by Sebastian

Hello jungle,

Sebastian here with a slightly belated workshop review. This time from Marc Masclans Painting Workshop. Organized by Nekropainter. Awesome guy. This time the course took place in Nuremberg on the premises of Ultra Comix and was held in English. What better way to imagine things than coloring characters in a comic book store?! It should also be mentioned here that Ultra Comix doesn't just sell only comics. He also stocks a large range of merchandise and minis and tabletop. Anyone who is ever in Nuremberg should definitely visit this shop.

The workshop figure was the Fighter and was already primed black. If you wanted, you could still prime the bust in 2K. The start was first of all theory, what the procedure is and it's best to get inspiration first. Now our Google-Fu was asked and in the end everyone found what they were looking for.

The first brushstroke followed. Here you could either look directly over Marc's shoulders or follow it on the projector. Marc showed his procedure step by step and explained the entire process in an understandable way at all times. Then it was our turn. The frequency with which Marc carried out his inspections was very good, and the time for feedback was also very generous so that questions could be clarified straight away. A lot was discussed and shown. Starting with the skin, through material science to NMM. Everything was explained in an understandable way.

Kathrin is such a crazy painter, she attended about 8+ workshops in the last months

A short visit came from local brush manufacturer DaVinci. The extra long and extra pointed brushes are interesting.

The whole workshop package is recommended and anyone who has the opportunity to attend one of Marc's workshops should take advantage of it.

FIN: Tokyo rain - NutsPlanet Agent Aida (1/35)

by Andy

Hello everyone,

It's Andy, again. Today, I want to show to you my finished project “Tokyo rain”.

First ideas - Street fashion

The miniature is from NutsPlanet called Agent Aida (1/35). As soon as I saw her, I had a scene of street fashion walking on the pavement in mind. Of course, the pistol in her right hand was too much, so I decided to cut it away and did a slight repositioning of the fingers of the right hand.

I started the project with priming black and white and some Grisaille underpainting. To get the first impression of my idea, I tinted the different parts with GW Contrast paints.

Refining the idea – Tokyo by night

The plan was to finish the lady at the MV-Family-Meeting from this point on in a cool comic style with bold black shadows.

At some point during the Meeting, Roman came up with the idea of a strong atmospheric light to create an additional punch and I really appreciated the input. The idea of rainy Tokyo with all the neon lights arose. Just google „Tokyo rain“ and you’ll see it :)

To paint such strong athmospheric OSL effect, I usually start with a darker tone and continuously define the effect with increasingly brighter tones the closer I get to my imagined light source.

The easiest way to do that is with an airbrush. Grab your color of choice, dilute it to have more control about the opacity and shoot it from your preferred angle, just as simple as that.

With a brush it’s a bit more challenging but also doable – paint a small mark at your base in the preferred angle to save the perspective and touch every surface visible from this angle with the color of your choice.

Tokyo Nights – in the rain

Working on the OSL and neon atmosphere I had another idea to make the project a bit more interesting. How about adding rain to the scene? The effect of raindrops was on my bucket list of things to try for years and this was the perfect project for it. I painted some circles on the ground and used the icicles tutorial to create the water-drops.

Announcement: A MASSIVE VOODOO Orctober Challenge!

by David

Hey all,

it's that time of the year, again!
In the Massive Voodoo jungle lands the days are getting shorter, leaves are starting to change their color, and Fall is coming. And in its wake: Orctober!

This year, the Massive Voodoo team will join in on the madness, and the Jungle will rumble with orcish savagery and barbarism!

What it means

The MV Orctober is a little painting challenge among the MV team.
The "Rules" are few and simple - just right for an Orc to grasp:

  1. Create one (or more) Orc-themed projects!
  2. Do so until 31 October 2022! The challenge ends on this date.
  3.  We will inform  the winners and our results via an upcoming YouTube video!
  4. We will find our winners only on Instagram with the hashtag #mvorctober
  5. With participating you allow us to use the photo of your winning entry

Become a part of #MVOrctober!

We will post our final results right here on the blog in early November,
but look out for WIPs with the #MVOrctober used via Instagram and will pick 8 favourites.

Each one of us participating in the #MVOrctober will pick his favourite and they will be presented in this format.

Each of these 'winnners' will recieve an Artprint of Roman's Orc illustration:

The MV 2022 Orctober Projects

Andy

Andy's contribution will be this awesome Orc-fella on a bike from ForgeWorld. He was long lost in the pile of opportunities but found his way back to the table.

Daniele

Daniele is busy with sculpting super-exciting new stuff, so he will skip this year's Orctober madness.

Hansrainer

Hansrainer will paint up a full Snotling Blitz Bowl Team (even it says Blood Bowl on the box):

Johannes

Johannes is also game - knows nothing about Orcs, therefor decided for one on a dinosaur!

Josua

Josua also has a little surprise for us in the works!

Kilian

Kilian is on board with his interpretation of GW's Swampcalla Shaman from the Kruleboyz range:

Philip

#aktober!
Philip is in full swing (pun not intended) preparing a full-frontal-nudity painting class (of course, all highly classy and tasteful, mind you!) for his very own, newly opened art school!

Check out his Freihand Atelier of Fine Art! So, this year, he'll miss out on the Orctober action.

Roman

Roman joins the Orc-train with a conversion from Blood Bowl, creating an lonesome Orc Warrior that brawls the streets of Mordheim.

Sebastian

Sebastian will participate with this friendly, well-armed fellow from Mezgike:

David

David will create a little scene centered on this wonderfully athletic Orc-lady from Artisan Guild - printed, of course, in his favorite scale: 1/72!

We're super-excited about this.
Talk to you soon,

FM: MICROBUSTS and sustainability in 3D printing

by Andy

Hello everyone!

Andy here :)

Many of us have 3D printers for hobby stuff nowadays and sometimes we struggle with failed prints - ok, maybe it’s just me but I want to share my thoughts anyway :)

I hadn’t printed for a while, and after reactivating the machine the printer produced some failed prints. I was printing awesome cyberpunk miniatures by unit9 but due to short exposure time on the resin printer the adhesion of layers was bad, so the torso was partly separated from the legs or some fine details were not printed. After adjusting, everything went well again but I had those bad prints laying around.

In the beginning, I was a bit upset by all that wasted resin and the time for cleaning - but then an idea hit me…

How about not throwing away the broken stuff, but instead converting them into what I call MICROBUSTS

After some sanding, finding suitable 1cm cubes and small rods for micro plinth everything was prepared.

Best thing for me about the microbusts is the possibility to paint each in 1-2 hours or a single evening session. It’s just a joy to have a fast project between bigger ones… and they look cool, too :)

I apologize in advance for the crappy pictures - fast projects, fast pictures!

Let’s have a look at the results:

Another topic in 3D printing is the waste produced by supports. Use them in a creative way instead of throwing them away. The base below is made completely out of supports from resin and FDM printers. Only some wires, plastic putty and potting soil added and of course the cool figures - which are not printed - from Hasslefree.

These days, sustainability and environmental protection are big topics in our lives. Everyone can help protecting our nature - why not starting at the hobby desk. Every little bit helps :)

Have a great day everyone and let me know your opinions in the comments below.

Yours

Andy

P.s.: you can see the MICROBUSTS at the WME - hope to see you there!
