Whitewash Wipeout

I have been a big fan of surf music for decades, especially surf instrumentals and love bands like Agent Orange and The Ventures. This pick does not have either band, but it does have that feel of both throughout. A couple are on the border of surf, but still make it for me. Let me know if you like any of them more than any others or what you would like to surf to? Did I miss any other good ones? There are so many.

Fall Do Overs

The last couple of days I've had picks that were somewhat related to The Fall, so I figured I should get right to the heart of it. These are all by the band covering other people's songs. A "do over" for them. I've always liked the band and especially their covers, so here are as many as I could figure out. I go against my rule of only putting enough songs in these playlists that end up being CD length (up to 80 minutes in my world). This is almost half hour too much. Sorry, but I didn't have the heart to cut any and I know I should have. You are just going to have to suck it up and deal with my shortcomings. I wanted them all in one place.

Northern Soul Covers 1

I knew some of these songs in this pick were covers, but did not know much about a Northern Soul dance movement. Might have liked to go dancing at one of these clubs. Heck, I kinda feel like I want to see if there is a call for it in Texas. Would be kind of fun to set up dancing lessons and play these old songs. Well, these are not the originals, but rather the covers of some of these Northern Soul Hits. Although many of these songs were not originally hits and that was the point. Most everyone, by now has heard Soft Cell's version of the old Gloria Jones song, so I didn't include it. Instead you get the Scorpions. Tomorrow look out for the Northern Soul original versions of these songs. Most of these songs, I have multiple covers, but I am still working on other songs not here that I can use for a part two. So if you have suggestions, I'll take them.

Todd Rundgren covers 1

Hard to pick covers from Todd Rundgren, because he's actually done a complete album of covers. But for this one, I included not just his solo work, but also a couple of his covers in Nazz, a brilliant one in Utopia, a couple from his solo work and then several that are not on any of his own albums, but on tribute albums. He's done tributes to the Doors to tributes to Yes. By far not all of his covers (I actually even put on one or two covers a few days ago that I didn't use today.)

Erosion Control 1

You are probably wondering about the title of this pick. I was making a mixtape of all covers and I was just going to call it rock blanket or something like that. But then as I was looking around, I noticed these blankets made up of rocks that they used for erosion control and I just loved it. It led me to all sorts of pictures of erosion control and I ended up with the one on the cover. I am sure you know all the originals of these songs, although some of you may have thought that at least two of these are the originals, but I assure you they are all covers. They are all written and performed originally by other bands. I have another pick of mostly rock covers that doesn't have any doubles with this on that I called Facsimile. With either have a fun journey looking up the original versions!

19 Body Count - Hey Joe

Tackhead Covers 2

Ok, this pick is part two of the Tackhead covers. Yesterday it was the originals of all today's picks. You will notice that most of these are from the band as Tackhead. But there is also a track by the members of the band when they were Fats Comet. One track with all of Tackhead except for Keith LeBlanc who was absent for Barmy Army. There is one cover from The Chess Project which was a Keith LeBlanc one off, but had help from Doug Wimbish and Skip McDonald. And one track from Dub Syndicate, which was sort of a Style Scott project but also had members of Tackhead and usually Adrian Sherwood as well. So you already have heard the originals from yesterday, here are all the covers. Notice they are in the same order as part one.

34 Tackhead - War

Facsimile

This pick was fun to make and there are a hundred other songs I could have included (tell me your favorites that I missed).Tried to get a secondary theme, but I couldn't hold it. I added a country cover. Ooops. I added an INXS cover. Ooops. Nothing worked out the way I planned it. But either way it turned out well. I think if I had my albums laid out better, I might have found a bunch more. This is what I found/remembered. I didn't want to just call it a Rock covers compilation, although it kind of is. I called it a Facsimile, but I was thinking more of a copy of a copy, like the movie Multiplicity (which is why I used a still from that movie in the cover.) These covers are all good, but very different from the originals. And like the movie there is at least one that is kinda retarded (and by that I mean that I would listen to the original all day before putting this one on), but most are quite good.

Facsimile

01 The Neville Brothers - Fly Like An Eagle

Jimi Hendrix Covers

I've seen lots of tribute albums to Jimi Hendrix. I don't think I have ever seen an album of songs that he covered. Here are the originals of the songs Jimi covered. This pick includes the first original version of the song, or the one that was most popular or well known. For instance The Troggs weren't the first to do Wild Thing, but the band (Wild Ones) that did do that song first is barely known and it's very difficult to get a copy of it. I don't have it. Notice a few Beatles tracks and a couple of Dylan tracks. Not unusual for that time. Enjoy this selection. I may do a compilation playlist of covers of Jimi Hendrix (other people who covered Jimi) some time. I have plenty, I'm just deciding which ones to include. And I probably could do a Hendrix Family pick, but I haven't gotten far with that one yet.

Kinks Kovers

This was fun to do. But also frustrating at the same time. I like the Kinks and originally was making a pick of my favorite Kinks songs. But I got to the frustrating part. The Kinks are great songwriters and sometimes great at recording. They are too British for me at times and my favorites are sometimes not anywhere near the top listened to songs by the Kinks. I compare them to the Who, but the Who were better in the studio. For instance, You Really Got Me. A great song. But Van Halen does it way better than the Kinks. In fact I like that song done better by 801 with Brian Eno. And Stop Your Sobbing. There is no doubt that the Pretenders do a much better version of the song. So that's not true for every song. But definitely a few. So I took some of my favorite covers of Kinks songs and put this together. Not an end all be all covers collection, just some of my favorites. Many versions of songs on this one. Some of my favorites: Shonen Knife, The Fall, Stranglers, The Jam, Nancy Sinatra, etc.

26 Gary Lewis & The Playboys - A Well Respected Man

Evil Step-Brothership 2

A continuation of the Led Zeppelin covers and covered pick, with a few mashups included. The Beat Farmers is interesting and fairly rare. I understand the story is that they went to a recording booth at a fair or something like that and just recorded it on the spot. At least that's what they said during the interview when they were in the radio studio I worked at. I also love the Beatnix. I wish I had more from this band, because that's a brilliant version. Probably my most favorite Led Zeppelin cover because it doesn't sound at all like the original, but it is exactly like the original at the same time. I've had non-music people say that they had no idea that Led Zeppelin covered the Beatles. LOL!

35 Suzanne Vega vs Led Zeppelin vs Streetlab - Tom's Immigrant Diner
36 Orchestre National De Jazz - Dazed And Confused

Evil Step-Brothership 1

At one time I could tell you how I came up with the name, but for the life of me I can't think of it now. Had something to do with the mothership, step brothers and, I don't know. Maybe you can make sense of it. Had fun designing the cover, using that font. As you will see over these two picks (today and tomorrow) It's mostly people covering Led Zeppelin, but also the originals of a couple of songs that Zeppelin pilfered from. At least a couple of Zeppelin mashups and a couple of really stupid covers that are so stupid they are brilliant. This volume also has the Xmas Zeppelin, so save that for the season.

Prince Under The Covers

Prince was a very prolific artist. He had so many great songs that were released and many that were not under his own name. This is a sampling of some of my favorites in this pick of Prince songs covered by other artists. I did not include songs that he did, but wrote for other people. See the last couple of days for that. You could do quite a few of these compilations (and I'm sure you have a favorite that isn't represented here - put it in the comments), but these are just my pick of the many. I used to love it when a Prince album came out, so I could get the singles because there always was a cool B-Side. Now we just have to wait for the estate to release something, or another artist to cover one of his songs.

Prince Under The Covers

01 Laibach - The Cross
02 Arto Lindsay - Erotic City

Someday My Prince Will Come 2

The continuation of my pick of songs the artist formerly known as Prince wrote for others. Well he may have at least allowed these others to use the songs. It's amazing how many songs Prince wrote. His archives are still full of tapes he made. Eventually more artists will cover his songs and probably there is a chance that his estate may not release everything he recorded under his name himself. I'm sure after two volumes of this, you know of a few right now, so leave that in the comments below.

17 No Doubt - Waiting Room

Someday My Prince Will Come 1

Enigmatic title? Nah. Just my pick of Prince songs done by other artists. Songs written by Prince whether it is under his own name or one of his pseudonyms. I'm not going to talk about all the different names he used to write or play music. There were a few. Look it up. I became interested around the time when Manic Monday came out and all around the same time I figured out Sugar Walls was his, and The Glamorous Life was his. A little more digging found several more (at least enough for two volumes) and eventually I put this together. I like the Disney "Prince will come" covers, because it would be so boring to just say Prince Penned. The juxtaposition of wholesome Disney with nasty androgynous Prince was too delicious not to take advantage of. Although who knows with Disney anymore?

Someday My Prince Will Come 1

01 The Time - Gigolos Get Lonely Too
02 The Family - The Screams Of Passion
03 Tevin Campbell - Round & Round

15 Sheila E - The Glamorous Life

Who Dunnit? 4

This is the last of this pick. Volume 4 of the series. Not because I don't have more, but because I haven't finished cleaning them up and assembling them. And by now, I'm sure you have a few suggestions. Do NOT include any that are on the Heart Full Of Soul compilation as that is a separate category for me. Although there are some great covers that sound totally different than the originals on that playlist. Obviously I know about the artists on these picks that have multiple albums of covers. This volume also has some interesting mashups, which technically are not covers, but they made some completely different songs out of them. I have all the Bossa Nova albums that cover different eras in a bossa nova style. They are great. And several of the country bands that do the same. If you haven't seen the artist on these lists and you really like them, let me know. I want my socks to blown off!

Who Dunnit? 3

More covers, from more bands. Yet another from the amazing Storm and the Balls. I discovered Storm Large as she opened for someone else. I arrived early to the show (which I rarely do) and found Storm. I must say it was a happy accident. This was before all her TV fame and all that. I was mesmerized. What an amazing performance. I could not take my attention off her. And then getting the album and discovering amazing covers in mashups like the ones on this series. Wow. A couple other picks to mention. Barenaked Lady Kevin Hearn's Thin Buckle doing War Pigs was a fun time . Saw him do that live on a Barenaked cruise. Beatnix doing Zeppelin songs as if they were the Beatles. I wish I had more of that. A couple of tracks from the amazing movie Welcome To Woop Woop. Go see it. And lastly, I need to mention the greatness of Senor Coconut. He's great. Never saw him live, but I wish I did.

Who Dunnit? 2

Volume 2 in the series of covers mostly done in different styles than the original. Pat Boone and Paul Anka both had albums out of rockin songs done in "swing" style (sorta). More Big Daddy with fifties rock and roll and several jazzy versions of new wave songs. Other bands that started to do this type of cover is Nouvelle Vague with some Bossa Nova versions of New Wave songs. And Richard Cheese doing comedy parody versions as a lounge singer. Add in the various others that I just have collected and you have my next pick.

Who Dunnit? 1

I like cover versions of songs. That's clear if you have been watching this space for any length of time. I especially like cover versions that do not sound at all like the original. Doesn't mean that I don't like original versions. I do. But there is something about an artist completely re-interpreting a song. This pick is that completely. Cover versions where you have to think, "Is this the original or was the original the original?". For me it really started with a band called Big Daddy. They were on Rhino records and they had a backstory that they were a 50's rock band that got lost somewhere for thirty years or so and came back to find all this new music, but they did the music in the style they were used to. Some great songs of the 80's done in "Sock Hop" style. Some really great covers (with just a few misses). Overall great. If you look for that kind of stuff, you find it everywhere. Here a few of my picks of those kind of songs where you wonder Who Dunnit.

Who Dunnit? 1

01 Barefoot - White Lines
02 Nouvelle Vague - I Melt with You
03 Pussycat Dolls - Sway
04 Stan Ridgway - Behind Closed Doors
05 Johnny Favourite Swing Orchestra - Black Dog

Carole King

Carole King is known for her songwriting and her own albums, especially Tapestry. All sorts of her great songs have been done by a variety of artists. I put this together when Nina Hagen covered one of her songs. I'm sure there are other compilations of Carole King songs, but these are my favorite picks. I included her singing some of her own hits, plus amazing songs like Natural Woman done by Aretha Franklin and put them next to tracks by the Motels and Nina Hagen. I hope you enjoy this playlist.

Undercover (Noise) 2

A continuation of the Undercover series and the the noise/industrial series. As stated before in part one, this was a cassette originally before this pick was transformed into a CD and then this playlist. Covers here include a cover of Throbbing Gristle (already an industrial band) but pared with a Righteous Brothers hit to make this twofer medley. And then also TG doing their own cover of a song that Frank Sinatra made famous. I like that there is a cover of Sisters Of Mercy followed by Sisters Of Mercy doing a Hot Chocolate cover. Cracks me up every time. A couple more disco songs (Abba and Carl Douglas), Pink Floyd, Olivia Newton-John and more round off this side two. Make sure you get side one.
