Self Hibernation Campaign - General Starbuck speaks out

Following the Union Army defeat at Fredericksburg this paper has become aware of increasing rumblings of discontent from with that organisation's officer Corps.

General Starbuck
One well known New York officer has gone so far as to say '...get that oaf Burnside replaced' ! A sentiment that many of his brother officers endorse but they are too feeble spirited to articulate. Not all officers have the same courage as this wild stallion, but that is maybe why Burnside is still in place a full month after his defeat.

It is also known that General Burnside is aware of the discontent about his command and he has publicly attributed the blame for his defeat at the lack of resolve for Generals Hooker and Sumner in executing their orders on the day.

He names other more junior officers in his accusations and he is believed to have initiated a purge of senior command to get in place a team officers he believes he can trust. However, to date no movement has been seen in that same officer corps to indicate changes are on their way.
impacted. This paper calls on President Lincoln to act quickly before the morale of the Army is severely damaged.

Self Hibernating Campaign - New York Times, September 1862

Second Class Citizens?
There is a growing disquiet amongst the ‘New York Italians’ Brigade soldiery, who have sacrificed themselves bravely for the cause at Bull Run and now Antietam. Having suffered the loss of many comrades killed and wounded, they have noted the high quality of medical services enjoyed by the other Brigades within the III Division.

Many are angered at the comparatively poor service administered to them. The feeling is growing amongst them that the South European troops are deemed expendable and not worth as much to the Army as other American soldiers.

“Why, even the soldiers in the ‘Massachusetts Colored Brigade’ are treated better than us!” said a Utica Volunteer, who asked that his name be withheld.

There is rumour that Officers are taking backhanders whilst equipment intended for their Brigade is being diverted elsewhere. They are looking to Brigadier General Nathaniel Starbuck to get a grip.
