Cruel Seas - Again!

After a week's delay - due to preparing to stage my 'Battle of Fulford Gate' game, I've been able to complete the last batch (for now) of Cruel Seas vessels.

This week's Cruel Seas output

This time we have a group of 2 x German S-Boats plus 3 x Vosper MTBs and a couple of sinking vessel markers. The painting process was pretty much the same as previous postings, although the two German vessels ended up being a little darker than those I did in the last batch. I'll likely go back and dry brush them lighter at some point if it ever crosses my mind again!

Two German S-Boats, one of each type

As can be seen the paint job is a little darker than the previous two I've done.
Not sure how much of an issue this might be.

I decided to make a couple of sinking vessel markers by cutting an MTB in half, using a razor saw and ensuring the cut ran diagonally so that I could utilise both sides as a sinking vessel. Truth be told, when making the models I managed to ping one of the torpedo tubes across the room as I cut it from the sprue - never to be found again!

I briefly considered scratch building a new tube but that was beyond my skills and I didn't want a vessel with just one torpedo tube as part of the flotilla.

Hence the sinking versions!

3 x Vospers, two different types

Another view

As noted the trickiest part of doing the sinking vessels was picking the cut line, I allowed this to go through part of the cabin superstructure to make it appear that there are two 'equal' sinking models'.

Sinking vessels with their decks on show.

The other thing to consider on the sinking vessels was that the under-side of the water-line boats is hollow, thus I had to find a way to full out their hulls. Looking at images of MTB hulls they appeared to be pretty flat, I opted not to model the propellers so it was a matter of supergluing strips of wooden coffee stirrers to the hull and when the glue is dry carving off the excess and then sanding down before painting black.

And same with their hulls on show.
The sea on the bases was painted with Citadel Paints 'Stegadon Green' before using clear PVA glue to build some wave texture on the water surface. I stippled white around the sinking vessels to simulate foaming water etc.

Off the Workbench: Even more MTBs, E-Boats and 28mm Marian Wars

Two new Marian Wars figures.

So I managed to focus long enough to get two new Marian Wars figures completed this week, I must do better! For these chaps I went back to regular paints and limited the use of 'speed. and 'contrast' paints to hair, shies and scabbards!

Both are from the Warlord Games ECW set, one an armoured pikeman that has had arm changes to give him a Sword & Buckler, as well as adding a steel helmet - all from the Wargames Atlantic Conquistador set.
Armoured Pikeman converted to be a Sword & Buckler man
The unarmoured pikemen is straight from the box, albeit that his pike has been shortened somewhat...

Unarmoured pikeman - pretty much straight out of the box.

Next up is some more Cruel Seas kit, namely two E-Boats (actually more precisely S-Boats) and four new Vosper MTBs.

The S-Boats are pretty long models, about 11cm, and are simple to construct and paint, just like their MTB counterparts. Again the sprues come with two S-Boat variants, the S-100 and the S-38

Bottom an S-100 vessel, top an S-38 vessel.

Painting these German vessels was very similar to the British MTBS, although I started with a base coat one shade lighter than the British vessels to help differentiate them even more.

Another view of the S-Boats

Only other real difference was the addition of wooden decking - buff paint with a light brown wash and seats towards the rear of each vessel, represented by a dark brown.

New MTBs

Finally we have the four MTBs, pretty much as per those shown last week. I think I have about four more vessels to paint and then a bunch of torpedo markers, maybe by next week!

And their other side!

Warlord Games - 1:300 MTBs

Well I could bang on about being really busy at work and that with the days getting shorter and shorter and darker and darker as we head towards Xmas  - but the bottom line is that I haven't done much painting over the last few weeks...

I did finish a 3rd Squadron of Polish Winged Lancers - bringing up to full strength the first of 3 Hussar Brigades I plan to have in the collection but this took me nearly a month to get done, in fits and starts, all round a poor show...

What I have been able to paint with some satisfaction the other week was two E-Boats off the front cover of Wargames Illustrated and then after obtaining a set of MTBs off a duplicate magazine at start of week, I now have two matching MTBs.

I present these below, 2 x Warlord Games MTBs, 1/300 scale for their new Cruel Seas game, each sprue allows the creation of 1 x Type I and 1 x Type II Vosper MTB. Models are pictured here in the dark night of the English Channel, hunting for E-Boats....
