Lookout Mountain & Rock City

Well, it is October 31st and here are a few pumpkins at Rock City.
At our church we call this All Saints Eve and on a Sunday near that date, we have a special service to remember and honor all our church members who have died during the past year.

While on top of the mountain, we decided to ride the Incline Railway downtown and back up again. When we got back, we went down to see the workings of what pulls the railway cars up the incline of the mountain. As one car goes down, the other car comes up. They meet at a switch at the halfway point. I was glad to hear them say that the complete cable system is changed out every three years. The incline is about a mile long. People who live on top of the mountain use it to go into town and back home.

This is a shot from inside the railway car as we rode down the mountain.

We drove up Lookout Mountain to see Rock City and while up there we rode the Incline Railway down the mountain and then back up. In this shot through a window you can see we are meeting the other car coming up as we go down. This Railway was started in the late 1800's.

I took Margo's advice and bought one of these bird houses. I can't wait to put it up next spring!

Everywhere you looked there were more pretty leaves!

This is one of the fall displays we saw at Rock City. I like the strong light and shadows.

Barns in the South

Yesterday we were in Arkansas and saw this first barn. Sorry about the power lines, they are everywhere! We stopped to get this picture but all the others were made through the van windows while my husband was driving. All the other barns were in south Tennessee. They are not as good as they could have been if we had stopped. There were so many, we didn't have time to stop.

We finally got to see some colorful foliage. I'll post more later.

More Pictures from Wednesday's Excursion

I just wanted to share a few more pictures with you from our Young at Heart trip. Looks like these Gulf Fritillary butterflies are going to stay around until winter!

I think this flower is a Pinta. There were several pots of this outside the dining porch.

This beautiful pink Petunia is spilling out of its basket on the back porch of the restautant.

This is the back porch of Lake Tiak O Khata Restaurant, where you can enjoy views of the lake and the nice fresh air while you are enjoying their delicious food.

I'm counting on Darla, or some of you other flower people, to tell me the name of this flower. The bloom reminded me of a hydrangea, but the plant didn't. It is weeping down from its planter.

The woods were full of wildflowers like these. Everywhere we look there is some new blessing to enjoy! Click on pictures for larger view.

Young at Heart Excursion

The "Young at Heart" group from our church went on a little trip to have lunch at this "area famous" restaurant, where we enjoyed a buffet style meal. It is located by a pretty lake which is alive with activity during the summer months.

This is at the Lake of the Pines, which is a beautiful, peaceful place with a restaurant and motel on site.

Since we didn't have anyone riding with us, after lunch, my husband and I stopped by Choctaw Lake and Wildlife Management Area which is in the Tombigbee National Forest.
In the past, he spent time deer hunting in this area, so he knew the roads. The foliage is just beginning to turn and there were lots of wildflowers. We didn't see any deer....just a coyote and a hawk. We had a very pleasant afternoon.

We made several stops for me to make lots of pictures of the trees and pretty wildflowers.

There were miles and miles of roads in this wildlife management area. We drove about 5 or 10 miles an hour with the windows down.

The Sweetgum trees and bushes are turning a glorious shade of red!

Here is a spot of pretty color in the woods.

We came to this dead-end, twice, but eventually did get out of this maze of roads. We didn't see any other vehicles during our two hour excursion!

My World Tuesday

This quiet and peaceful, lake is about a mile from our house. It's always a pleasant thing to just go there and relax. A few Canada geese make this their year round home. Here you can fish from the bank or launch your small fishing boat. This lake is fed by several springs so the water is always nice.
