A mixed bag of painted minis

The last batch of minis painted this summer.

It’s a rather varied bunch, and some of them can and will be used in different settings.

Two useful 'heroes' from the Hillbilly Boys box from Black Scorpion. They will see action in Western settings, as well as pulp and even modern. I like this kind of really versatile minis.

A forest-tribe female from Heroes of the Dark Age. She'll be used in my upcoming solo-campaign of Paleo Diet. Just two more to finish and I can start that.

Two useful civilian kids, made by Wizkids, and a zombie, or part of one anyway, from Heresy Miniatures. The kids could also be used in several settings, and the zombie will work equally well in fantasy and modern settings.

Wild West Bank from Printable Scenery

The files for this bank come from Printable Scenery and their Wild West range of buildings.

I’ve had it printed and half-painted for quite a while, and finally painted the final details.

The building is in three parts that I printed with a layer height of .2 mm. Total print-time on my Prusa i3 Mk3 was around 36 hours and filament cost around €6.

Now I have to get some suitable furniture.

2018 in the rearview mirror

A game of Dux Britanniarum in full swing. We use Lord of Rings figures and the heroic Free Men are getting squashed (mainly on my flank) in this Xmas-game with Laffe, Thomas and Koen.

Another year gone and even more minis painted.

I had a goal that the tin- and plastics-mountain would actually be smaller at the end of the year, so let’s see how that turned out (for an explanation on the idea and how I count see here)

Well, my fingers sort of slipped on a couple of Kickstarters this year; Uboot (8 minis, as 1/72 figures counts as ½ a mini), Cthulhu – Death must Die (84 minis) and Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon (38). Minis from these do count, as I count models when they are actually bought. On top of that a box of 40 farmyard animals, a couple of tanks in different scales, a few airplanes, 44 Vikings and a handful of other minis.

234 models bought, far more than expected.

I have really excavated the tin- and plastics-mountain this year. Stuff I know won’t be painted have been sold off or put in the For Sale-box at the club. With another hundred hitting the sales-box in December I’ve reached 285 minis.

Painted

All of the Mesozoic critters.

It’s been a modest year of painting, as I have just finished 139 minis. You’ve seen most of them here already. The year ended with the final dinosaurs from Tamiya’s excellent Mesozoic Creatures boxes (I got two) and a couple of random 28mm figures.

Finished in December: A Prospector from Brimstone and The Major from SMOG: Rise of Moloch (and I painted another 5 zombies for SMOG also, but no pics of those)

Terrain-wise it has been much better, with lots of different terrain finished, much of it 3D-printed.

So my goal was reached! I actually sold more minis than I bought and with the models painted I reached -190 models. Not bad at all.

3D-printer

I finally bought a new 3D-printer this fall, a Prusa i3 Mk3. It’s been printing mainly dungeon-pieces for my Dungeons & Dragons campaign, but also some scatter terrain and a couple of houses. You’ll see more on the dungeon soon.

Well, I think that neatly sums up 2018. A good year in many respects, even though it was rather weak on painted minis.

So, what about 2019?

I will try to shrink the tin- and plastics-mountain even more, that’s for sure. Otherwise, I don’t know. We’ll see what happens.

Wild West – Fistful of Lead, gallows, houses, outhouses and more

We’ve started a Wild West campaign at the club using the Fistful of Lead rules. They are really easy to learn, but not in any way simple. Two games in and we are really enjoying ourselves and the carnage that inevitably ensues.

The games inspired me to finish some figures, print some suitable stuff on the 3D-printer and go over the houses I already have and improve them somewhat.

First off is the gallows. I assembled and painted one from 4Ground a while ago, and now I dirtied it up with a wash. Nothing much but it does make it fit in with what other stuff we have at the club. Let’s say it’s a bit of a grimdark past.

I also had some unpainted crew and…customers… for the gallows, and they got a quick brush-job. Beside the gallows is a blacksmith from Shadows of Brimstone.

Next were some houses from Renedra, the American Church and a Farmhouse. They were also already painted and assembled, but got a couple of washes to look worn down.

One thing that is usually sadly missing when it comes to Western towns in 28mm scale, is outhouses. There ought to be quite a few of them and they do present some excellent cover.

I had a build but unpainted one from 4Ground (I think) that got a paintjob and a wash making it look…lived in… or well used. I think this will belong to the Saloon…

Then I printed two small shacks from Hayland Terrain. One is a sturdy shack, maybe filled with dynamite, and the other a conventional outhouse.

On top of that I also finished a couple of wagons, crates and some other small stuff.

Finally some photos of the last two games. The heroes are Killer Kim's Killers, a gang of kind-hearted desperados that love kittens and help old ladies cross the streets (preferably in cover behind them).

Killer Kim (in brown trenchcoat), and his gang - Fast Freddie, Rifle Rich, Shotgun Shaun (RIP in the first game) and Hatless Harry.

A huge shoor-out with the Castroulle Bunch. They were more or less slaughtered which was very satisfactory. For my part most of the game was a big shoot-out more or less centred around the barn in the background.

Second game - Rob the Coach. Two gangs try to rob the coach and one tries to defend it.

Jeppan manages to secure the coach in the end, and gets all the loot. But I get to shoot a lot of people and feel rather satsified.

Read of the first game here. It is of course filled with lies, but it will have to work.

Another game tonight. Should I go for a sneaky game and actually get some loot or the usual all guns blazing approach? Hmm, brawn or brains?

I think I know the answer to that…

Water Tower from Sarissa

I bought this rather excellent water tower from Sarissa a while ago. It’s from their 28mm Old West range and is, off course, for my Dead Man’s Hand wild-west games.

I had a bit of an accident when I assembled it, as the fit of all the parts to the base-plate was rather tight. I tried to force it and the legs holding the tank broke. Much swearing was heard…

Anyway, I tried to fix it and I believe the water tower actually looks better now than before. It’s a bit more personal J

I also added a cover to the water-tank.

Now it is time to start playing DMH. The first games will be at home, and then on to the club, as several members has showed interest in dusting off their cowboys.

Old West figures from Black Scorpion Miniatures

I bought the Tombstone 4 set from Black Scorpion in 2015 to get my hands on the priest, for use in Pulp Alley. The other four minis went into the resin-mountain, waiting for some attention.

As I’m working on my Old West buildings I thought it was a good idea to finish these figures, as I hope it all will see action soon. So, here they are, after a coat of paint.

American Church from Perry/Renedra

Another building ready for Dead Man’s Hand, this time it’s the American Church from Perry Miniatures/Renedra.

A nice little kit that gives you a really useful building.
