ted power couldn't beat the reds in the 1990 nlcs with the pirates, so he decided to join them as a free agent in december of 1990. here's his 1991 o-pee-chee card:

power had previously played for the reds from 1983 through 1987. back then, he was the team's primary closer, at least for a couple of seasons. this time around, he complemented the 'nasty boys' tandem of rob dibble and norm charlton, picking up 3 rogue saves and appearing in a team leading 68 games. unfortunately for power, the reds were unable to repeat their 1990 success, and finished 5th in the nl west. power moved on after the season, signing a free agent contract with the indians.

1990 ted power
after the 1989 season, free agent ted power signed with the pittsburgh pirates. here is his 1990 o-pee-chee card:

and the topps back:
as a member of the 1990 pirates, power was part of a 'closer by committee' along with bill landrum, bob patterson, and stan belinda. used exclusively as a reliever for the first time since 1985, he saved 7 games and won one game in 40 appearances. the pirates won the nl east that year but lost the nlcs to the reds (for whom power had pitched from 1983 through 1987) in 6 games. power made his only postseason appearances in that series, pitching in 3 of the games. he saved the first game, finished the fourth game, and started the sixth. kind of hershiser-esque, except that the pirates lost the series.

1988 ted power
it's going to be ted power week here at oh my o-pee-chee. after the 1987 season, power was traded from the reds to the royals in the danny jackson deal. here's his 1988 o-pee-chee card:

now the o-pee-chee back:
and the topps back:
power split his time between the starting rotation and the bullpen during his time with the royals. he went 5-6 with 2 shutouts which came in back to back starts in june. at the end of august, the royals sent him to detroit where he made 4 appearances (2 starts) with 1 win and 1 loss in the tigers' push for the al east title. unfortunately, they came up one game short. after the season, power became a free agent and re-signed with the tigers. however, they released him prior to the end of spring training in 1989, and he was picked up by the saint louis cardinals.
with the cardinals, power would continue his dual role of starter and reliever, winning 7 and losing 7 in 23 appearances.
