Friday Comic Book Day.
I never expected to see Bob Powell at True Comics, but I guess he had even more clients than I thought. From the period Howard Nostrand worked at his studio, and I am guessing I see his hand here as well.

Howie! Fine Art!
Wednesday Illustration Day.
Three Lou Fine illustrations and one Howard Nostrand from This Week in the late fifties. Both great comic book and newspaper strip artists who dabbled in illustration.

Nostranded
Friday Comic Book Day.
Howard Nostrand was a remarkable artist. He worked with Bob Powell for years, before branching out on his own. Saved fromonscurity by John Benson's intreview in Graphic Story Magazine, he is now among the most collected fifties artists and recieved the honor of a book just with his work from Craig Yoe. So when I came across this early romance quickie which seems to me to have been drawn by Nostrand, I immediately asked Craig. Problem is, taht at this time in his career Nostrand was still working with Powell and his destinctive style, which I think to see on the first page here, was not yet as developed as it later would be. Craig confessed not to know, either. So I am putting it out there. Nostrand or not Nostrand?

Raising My Eyebrow
Thursday Story Strip Day
.
Man, what I wouldn't give for a complete and good run of this strip. As I have shown earlier, the strip was started by Howard Nostrand and is known for the fact that Neal Adams worked as an assistant on it. But what is less known, is that Bob Powell took over the strip after three months and ran it longer that Nostrand did in the first place. I have written an article about Powell's 'forgotten' work of his last ten years. In most hostory books it is as if he did nothing after leaving comics, while in fact he created a huge aount of wonderful work for the early Mad magazine imitations, newspaper comics such as this one, girlie magazines and of course Sick. Some of the best work of his career and some of the most intelligent. I hope one day it will be published, along with a complete run of these. Just look at that Sunday - and I only have a two tier, but they were made a three tier Sundays.

Happy Halloward
To keep the special Halloween contest by Craig Yoe and IDW up here where it belongs, I am showing horror stories all week. If you are from the mainland of the US be sure to enter this contest, because the prizes are fenomenal. These books by Craig are great and they won him the 4th Annual Jerry Bails Award For Excellence in Comics Fandom only this week.
But I do have abone to pick with Craig. I mean, great books. And jack Cole, Bob Powell, they were all deserving of these books. But where is the collection of Howard Nostrand stories? I know most of Nostrand's work for the Harvey horror titles (if not all) have been reprinted quite well by PS Books, but imagine how they would look in Craig's slightly oversized format how well one of his heads would do on those covers. And of course, Craig would be able to do an introduction and then he would have to come to me for some scans of Nostrand's newspaper work and I would get a free sample...
